Agree with this one it is reasonably well known & with a kiwi flavour familiar to Australians

Can't quite remember but aren't the lyrics a bit negative defeatest?

That's my only concern on it

Still think the KISS principal would work better

Remember general Kiwi Supporters have had years of "Sit down ya mug" insecurities so it may take some coaxing....hence something simple funny and let it build from there

I know this is a bit American...well, very American actually, but I've always thought the US Marine Corps song was a great tune.

I've thrown some lyrics together, and I know they're cheesy but what do you think?

(Here's the tune, for those that don't know it)

From the heights  of Mount Victoria

To the Shores of Kilbirnie;

We come to follow the Phoenix

playing in our fair city;

Claiming honour for our nation

Wellington is where well be;

We are proud to bear the title

of NZs football team.

I think "you give me fever" would be great, but i do think chanting the tune of " ring of fire" would get the crowd going too, who's up for friday night against the Jets we should start all these chants then, for good practice for the opener against Melbourne.

I hope we get a good turn out on Friday show our appreciation for the teams good start to the season. WE LOVE OUR PHOENIX, WE DO, WE LOVE OUR PHOENIX, WE DO!!!!!

I like give me fever, but um do you guys know some of the other lyrics?
Fever when you kiss me?
Fever when you hold me tight??
That would frighten the opposition, but maybe... not in the right way....
Still, could work if you drop the naff bits out...

How about James Brown's "I got the fever"?

Other stuff you could use (maybe not for the phoenix song, but. just to play every now and then)
Come on baby light my fire (the doors)
Burning ring of fire (by the MIB, Johnny Cash)
Firestarter (prodigy)
House of Fire (Alice Cooper and Joan Jett)
We didn't start the fire (Billy Joel)

Someone needs to collate this and produce a song/chant sheet that we can print out and take with us.  That way everyone knows the words.....

Someone mentioned it a while ago (Rupert I think), but that "Yellow" song by Coldplay would kick ass.  The whole song has a massive anthemic quality - add a few thousand lubricated blokes and what a feast of fevered feeling it'd be.

Wouldn't even need to change the words (much).  In fact, if I didn't know better, I'd say Apple's old man was a fever boy from waaaay back - musta' had a premonition....

"Look at the stars
look how they shine for you
And everything you do
And they were all YELLOW!
I came along
I SANG a song for you
And All the things you do
And it was called YELLOW!"

...then something about being beautiful etc etc

New here...may have been done already - but I just knocked this up..

.

In a town called Wellington

There's a yellow football team

We are kiwi and we're proud

In a league of Aussie teams

We all support the Phoenix football team

The Phoenix football team, the Phoenix football team.

I like Lean on me.

It has the makings of an anthem I think.

"Lean On Me"

Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain, we all have sorrow
But if we are wise
We know that there's always tomorrow

Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on

Please, swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you won't let show

You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on

Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on

You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on
I just might have a problem that you'll understand
We all need somebody to lean on

If there is a load
You have to bear that you can't carry
I'm right up the road, I'll share your load
If you just call me

Call me (If you need a friend)
Call me (Call me uh-huh)
Call me (When you need a friend)
Call me (If you ever need a friend)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (If you need a friend)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me (Call me)
Call me

I agree. My mention of Lean on me above was made because I had not seen any groundswell to adopt Ring of Fire. If there is, I am 100% in favour. If it is not going to be adopted I am suggesting Lean on me as a plan B.

My ONLY reservation about Ring of Fire is that it works fantastically with musical accompaniment - the trumpets are crucial. So, it seems to me we either need the PA System supplying the intrumentals and we sing along (which I am not sure is something we want) or we get some trumpet players in the zone to lead/augment our singing.

I am worried that with JUST fans singing Ring of Fire might be difficult to pull of.

Well realistically we are never gonna get enough people at away games to make it worthwhile singing our song away, so we are only ever going to sing it at home.

Works on so many levels.

Trumpet. Pissed off I couldn't play like Miles Davis after 10 lessons. And my lips best kept for kissing at that age.

What about Wellington by the Muttonbirds...

Wellington by Muttonbirds

I wish I was in Wellington, the weather's not so good
The wind it cuts right through you and it rains more than it should
But I'd be there tomorrow, if I only could
Oh I wish I was in Wellington
I wish I was in Wellington - the bureaucracy
The suits and the briefcases along Lambton Quay
The Harbour City Capital, the lights beside the sea
Oh I wish I was in Wellington
It just isn't practical, you down in the capital
And me at the other end of the island
The problem is the gap - between us on the map
And there's no easy way to reconcile it
I wish I was in Wellington, the cafes and the bars
The music and the theatre, and the old Cable Car
And you can walk everywhere 'cause nowhere's very far
Oh I wish I was in Wellington
Oh I wish...
Oh I wish I was in Wellington, the wind it cuts right through
I wish I was in Wellington, there's so much more to do
I wish I was in Wellington, and you wish I was too
Oh I wish I was in Wellington, 'cause then I'd be with you
Oh I wish I was in Wellington, 'cause then I'd be with you

Agree, but my point was that is with SIGNIFICANT PA system support. In the singing part Johnny Cash on the PA receives, at best, a smattering of disjointed support from the singing fans. They really get into the do-do-do-do-do-do-doooooo part, but that is hardly the foundation of an anthem, in my opinion.

By contrast the Liverpool fans sing "Never Walk Alone" unaccompanied and it's moving, loud, scans well etc. It's the epitome of a football anthem.

I worry that without the intrsumentals Ring of Fire is actually quite technical and difficult for a crowd to sing unaccompanied.

Maybe it's just me though? *Shrug*

Pretty sure they just stole this off Celtic, so they had a nearby template on how to do it.

Absolute classic but it's not unaccompanied. They play it over the PA before games (although it's unaccompanied when sung during the game obviously).

Okay. Let's just say they did steal/borrow/adapt it from elsewhere... so what?

I don't think anyone is claiming that we have to not borrow something, that it MUST be 100% original.

Whether Never Walk Alone is or is not borrowed or original is irrelevant to this discussion... it is still a great football anthem.

What we want is a great football anthem. If getting to one involves borrowing/stealing/adapting it from elsewhere, then fine, let's do that.

I was trying to talk about what characteristics a candidate tune/song needs / ought to have in order to be a good choice as an anthem.

I think it needs to:

    1. be easy to sing en masse, preferably without musical or PA accompaniment.

    2. have lyrics that focus on one or more of (preferably many of): mateship, loyalty, belonging, football, Wellington, passion, integrity, winning, yellow and black, Phoenix.

    3. stir people's emotions and passion.
