I'm a believer

Hi everyone,

Here’s my two cents worth: What about using “I’m a believer” by the Monkees. Should be possible to keep most of the words, just change a few to link it to football and the ‘Nix (there's even a bit about the rain in there). Most of us older guys will know the song, and most of the young’uns have seen the movie Shrek. We have many chants, but not many sing-along-songs. I thought about this after listening to West Ham’s bubble song during the Football United games – it may be a silly song, but it created heaps of atmosphere.  It would go something like this:

[verse1]

I thought love was only true in fairy tales

Meant for someone else but not for me.

Love was out to get me

That's the way it seemed.

Disappointment haunted all my dreams.

Then I saw the ‘Nix, now I'm a believer

Not a trace of doubt in my mind.

I'm in love, I'm a believer!

I couldn't leave them if I tried.

[verse2]

I thought love was more or less a given thing,

Seems the more I gave the less I got.

What's the use in tryin'?

All you get is pain.

When I needed sunshine I got rain.

Then I saw the ‘Nix, now I'm a believer

Not a trace of doubt in my mind.

I'm in love, I'm a believer!

I couldn't leave them if I tried...

And then I saw her face

She was a Golden Retriever...

Good idea Oldsloth, there was some talk about getting a song like Forever Blowing Bubbles. I think you might be onto something with I'm a Believer. Will be interesting to see what others think.

Also, welcome to the forum!

I think the chorus is a keeper... maybe that's all that's needed?

See here for the song:

Then I saw the ‘Nix, now I'm a believer

Not a trace of doubt in my mind.

I'm in love, I'm a believer!

I couldn't leave them if I tried.

[Repeat]

If we choose a song like Forever Blowing Bubbles, or Never Walk alone, or Sunshine over Leith, etc. Then I would have thought Ring of Fire was the obvious choice - but why not choose a NZ song with Wellington connections?

Ring of Fire was put forward at the chant chat as an option, though it would be great to have a song with NZ or Wellington connections. Preferably, whatever it is, it's a song that is relatively simple and a lot of people (young and old) know it so it can be picked up easily to get momentum in the crowd. I think whatever we decide (if we decide) will take a while to catch on, someone said it took 50 odd years before forever blowing bubbles was embedded at West Ham.

Ryan actually brought up 'Home Again' in another thread. I'd back it.
