Not strictly about chants at the nix, but I find it interesting that their 'sample' of rugby fans say that it's not sporting to boo opposition when they're taking penalties or coming onto the field.  Grant Fox then says that he was distracted enough by booing one time to miss a penalty - surely that's all the more reason to jeer opposition kickers?

Then again, booing itself is pretty unoriginal.  If the rugger fans could break out some good 'who are yas' at the opposition perhaps they'll win this time.

You are assuming that there is enough intelligence in a rugby crowd to actually organise chants over the standard cries of "Sit Down!" and "F*ck off and watch soccer if you want to do that!"

Interesting. Boo'ing the opposition is one of only 2 chants they know.

Rugby boo more than a lot of sports that I've seen. They even boo their own team a lot.

Allegedly

Whereas we just get up and leave about 15 mins before the end of the match.

The worst sign of bad sportsmanship was thought to be booing or insulting the opposition's national anthem, followed by throwing items on to the pitch, booing the team as it runs on to the field and insulting the referee.

I remember the Paraguay national anthem at the All Whites vs Paraguay game at the RoF where all 15,000 in the crowd did the exact opposite of insult the national anthem. We all clapped along to the jovial second half of the anthem.

Hopefully more of this happens at the RWC, rather than booing and jeering like rugby crowds usually do. patrick4782011-08-17 16:50:22

I prefer to (hypothetically) watch the Nix getting spanked for 15 mins as opposed to watching any of  the "World Cup" ,thanks. hamezilla2011-08-17 19:12:41

Does "hypothetically" mean the same as "drunkenly"?

But at least there are other, much more original chants, unlike the boring monotonous rugby chants.

Has been mentioned before, but I was talking to someone who has been to both an Irish and an AB game at the RWC and he said that NZ fans really didn't know how to get in behind the team (other than the AB clap clap clap thing).

Surely that didn't surprise.

I went to the France v Tonga game and some guys behind me commented on how "Toooooonga" sounded just like "Allllllllllllllll Blacks"

Not a surprise no, just that this guy had been to both matches and was very emphatic about the lack of passion shown by NZ crowds.

I started my rugby international experiences on the north terrace of Lansdowne Road and have been to Ireland v Wales/England/France/Scotland games there (as well as Ulster v Colomiers in the 99 Heineken Cup final and Ireland v USA & Australia in RWC99)

Having since lived in Sydney (and attended 2001 Lions Tour/2003 RWC and many Waratahs games) and Wellington (attending at Westpac the 2005 Lions tour, Hurricanes v Waratahs semi final, 2 Bledisoe Cup games, RWC 2011 (WAL v RSA, AUS v USA, SCOT v ARG))

Can confidently say the atmosphere at a Aus/NZ rugby internationals/big game pales in comparison  to  a 6 nations game in the UK or France.

The closest I've experience to what I used to at Lansdowne road woul've been the ABs v Lions in 2005 (and that was the Lions fans doing most of the singing)

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!
