How about ripping off Waltzing Matilda for a chant? If Aussie commentators want to dub us the "New Zealand Phoenix", let's make every game an international and rip the sh*t out of their de facto anthem.

We could do a send up of the entire song or just the chorus (which is pretty easy to sing after a pint or six).

Here's a couple of possible choruses:
<!-- @page { size: 21cm 29.7cm; margin: 2cm } TD P { margin-bottom: 0cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } -->

Wellington Phoenix, Wellington Phoenix

The hottest football club in the Australasian league

We're cheering and chanting on the mighty firebirds

To another victory in the A-League!

Alternative:

Wellington Phoenix, Wellington Phoenix

Burns Aussie football clubs in the ring of fire

We're cheering and chanting for the mighty firebirds

The Wellington Phoenix will never die!

Hadn't thought of that! Was just using the word as a poetic reference to a phoenix!

So are our cricket and football teams the only Wellington sporting clubs to use the phoenix moniker?

In any case, hopefully our boys will become the better-known phoenix/firebirds -- on both sides of the Tasman, at least.
