Boys we really have to make our presence felt this weekend. Everyone need to be as loud as possible and completely in to it. Everyone (all the sheep who are only going this weekend to see Beckham) is going to be looking to us for chants and volume and influence, so if we can steer these people in the right direction we could also recruit another couple of thousand to our normal A League games, which would be brilliant. So I hope everyone is pumped for this.

One thing you have to be very careful of is branding many of those who are going along on Saturday night in a negative way.

I can just see the forums on Sunday now.I sat behind a guy who wouldnt even join in with the chants well, so what?  Watching sport is a personal experience, enjoyed in many ways, and just as its wrong for others to judge YF, its equally wrong for YF to judge first-timers and brand them sheep or band-wagoners, just because they havent been to every game, drink at the Backbencher and yell abuse at the opposition.

Just because you stand in Aisle 21 every week and post on these forums and wear your Phoenix gear, that doesnt necessarily make you more of a football fan than someone who doesnt do those things.  It just makes you a different type of fan.

Im positive there will be people going on Saturday night who are looking forward to it as much as anyone on here.  I know a couple who have always liked football but havent been to any Phoenix games, but theyre going on Saturday.  By definition on some threads here, theyre sheep.  Well, theyre not they have just chosen to go along and enjoy this particular game and everything that goes with it, while choosing to watch Phoenix A-League games on TV instead.

I just sense a feeling on these forums recently, and particularly in the lead-up to this match, that if you dont fit the YF mould, youre not a true fan and a target of ridicule.  I can tell you that theres nothing more likely to alienate first-timers and therefore prevent them from coming back - than an us and them mentality.

You're 100% correct, and my aplogies as I know what it's like to turn up to a sport with a bit of a foreign atmosphere and feel a little un-welcome. My main point here is that people are going to be looking to us to really lead the pack and raise the volume and get everyone in to it. I think we can make a huge impact for Wellington, the Fever and the Phoenix on both Friday and Saturday nights as all eyes will be on us (and the football obviously)... So let's all go nuts and surpass the expectations.

As a "first timer" at the stadium for a football match my boys and I loved the lead from the YF.  You guys were awesome - both nights!  We have followed all the games on TV so far and will try and manage the four and half hour drive again before the end of the season.  My 16 year turned to me on Friday night and said the advertising is SO right - 90 minutes, 90 emotions!!  It was great to be part of such an amazing occasion on Saturday night too - at least I remember most of this one, unlike the Kuwait game back in the day (but I think that was due to the strawberry dacquiris).  I have been to a heap of rugby games at the stadium and the atmosphere on Friday and Saturday let them for dead and most of that would have to be attributed to the YF.
