I have just done a quick search to work out the cost of going down to Christchurch for the game on 30th Jan.  The figures are for 1 adult and 1 child as we both attend every home game.  The flights would be $172 return.  On top of this I would need to factor in parking costs at the airport and a room for the night in Christchurch as the latest return flight on Saturday 30th is 6.40 p.m. as well as food, drink etc.  I can't see much change from $300-$350.  This is way more than an adult season ticket for the whole season.  (These figures are from the Air NZ website).

I have held off from writing this email as I wanted to try and find the positive in the club playing in Christchurch, but I'm fed up now and I have given up.  I was really looking forward to more home (Wellington) games this season as 10/11 just isn't enough to satisfy the football itch.  I would have been happy to accept an increase in season ticket prices to reflect more games.  I am just very disappointed that the club has decided to take games away from Wellington.  A club has to develop its home fan base, the people who will come week in and week out.  The ones who sit and watch 0-0 home draws against Central Coast and 4-2 defeats to Melbourne when we think playing the ball along the surface of a lake would be great tactics.  We are the ones who front the money up weeks before the season starts, purely on hope and faith because that is what supporting your club is all about.  For us it is not about an event, a one off, it means much much more.  A club that starts to forget this is in danger of losing touch with the people who really do support when times get tough, because I have shown up for everything this club has given us over the past two seasons.

Some questions to finish.

With a clash with a concert, why are we not just playing in Australia on that weekend?
Will we always be stuck with just 11 home games in Wellington as the competition continues to expand?
Why a game towards the end of the season, when things get really interesting?  I guess us lucky Wellington fans get the hard slog mid-season games.

I am happy to be corrected on my figures by the way, I would still like to try and support the team if it is possible but times are tough.

You are completely missing the point, I want to go and support my football team and they are the Wellington Phoenix.  I am already planning to go to Palmerston.  I would like to see the club developing there local fan base, don't see an awful lot of them up the coast for example.

The Interislander and then driving to Chch would be more economical (I think). Saturday morning ferry, drive afternoon. Nix Saturday night. Sunday morning drive, afternoon ferry.

Couldn't be bothered reading that whole first post but I think I get the jist.

All I can say is I wish people would stop whinging about it and realize that there's a large fanbase outside of Wellington who need their Phoenix-fix.

So I suppose Manchester United are selfish for not playing games in London, China, Japan or wherever else they have fans?

Nobody's trying to deprive anybody of anything - you are all free to travel to Wellington whenever you like. I can't think of any other team in the world that has played home games out of their hometown just because there are some fans in other towns.

As for the initial point though, I think cheaper flights will likely become available at some stage. Keep an eye out on grab a seat etc. And, you could just make a weekend of it, that's what I plan on doing (depending on what this concert is that clashes! If it's AC/DC I will stay here! ).

We knew that the Stadium needed to be re-turfed during the holiday period so I was expecting a couple of "home road trips" and I'm looking forward to the game in Christchurch (might even take the ferry & train....could be a laugh).  As for playing in tractor country thats cool too as I live in Waikanae, excuse for the family to stay my place on the way up.  However, the Phoenix is a Wellington club, on that I agree with Kapitinix and I'd be pretty peeved if Tony P adopts the idea of taking OUR team on away every year.  If I was an Arsenal fan(forbid it) based in Cardiff I would not expect the Gunners to play an all important home game against Liverpool in my home town just to make me and my mates happy.  That is why there are pre-season tours.  Personally I'd like to see a Christchurch team in the A-League to spice things up, but the FFA (& Asia) would not have it.  To sum up- looking forward to ChCh & Palmy this year but don't do it again.

Appreciate the comment Whitby Boy and you are probably right about perspective.  I have just struggled with these thoughts since the announcement and wanted to air my opinion, what a forum is all about I think.  Didn't know I was going to be compared to Hitler though.  Auskiwi you are out of order and I don't except people to make comment on peoples employment, family arrangements etc.  I work hard, look after my family, pay my taxes and don't expect to fork out $350 plus to go and support my team at a home game.  And I reserve my right to express that opinion.

Personally I like to add a bit of perspective to these things.  London has plenty of pro footy teams (NZ in its entirety has one, my friend) and China and Japan are completely different countries and have less of a shout over getting Man United over than Christchurch does with regards to the Phoenix.

It's still relevant, PLENTY teams have fans that live out of town. If these fans want to go, they make sacrifices and go. If they can't, or won't, then that's life. They don't expect the team to come to them!

It's great for fans in Christchurch and Palmerston North, of course it is but not so great for those of us who were expecting 2 extra games this season but will now have to effectively travel to 2 away games.

Also, with the pre season cup gone, I will end up seeing less games at the ROF than last season!

Hitler was opposed to teams playing home games in other cities even if that city didn't have a professional football team.

I'm a Leeds fan living in NZ but I don't expext Leeds to up-shop for the week and play here cos there are fans here (me & mdog).  Teams "spread their wings" for their "away" fans at the conclusion of the season or as a pre-season tour, NOT in the middle of it.  My shirt says "WELLINGTON TILL I DIE" not "Mostly Wellington and sometimes other places Till I die". Taking the team on tour is Taking the micky out of true week in week out fans.  And yes, I would still travel to those games.

Lets not get carried away here... There's no promise Christchurch will provide a larger crowd than Wellington. Just because 4,000 went to watch some Mainland XI doesn't mean they will attract 10,000+ for a real game.

Kapitinix, I am sorry that you have come to this conclusion. I feel that as a Phoenix fan, who wants the Phoenix to embed and grow, then getting out a bit in NZ can only benefit the club that I support.

Having done an Road trip to Sydney last year, I can't begin to express how much fun that was. Different to be sure, but going to ChCh with the Yellow Fever tops on, we'll be like missionaries and be hailed and admired as we enter pubs. Well, maybe not, it is Christchurch. Christchurch sports watchers (not just 'soccer fans' will be there) won't know what hit them, will come away enlightened and our missionary work will be done.

You are right to be entitled to your view, but when you say that "I wanted to try and find the positive in the club playing in Christchurch, but I'm fed up now and I have given up", I'm not sure you have tried as hard as you might.

It'll be grand. And Palmy's not that far away from Kapiti.Turfmoore2009-04-21 20:01:37

Oh happy days are here again.....

Share the great club that is the Phoenix, let those that can afford to travel and support the club in other cities do so, and let those that make expensive trips to Welli to support "their team" in seasons gone by enjoy one game in their home city for once.

Spare a little thought for others who have to pay to come to Welli to support the team they also love.....and not only how this affects you....although appreciate your right to air your opinion.

Hopefully this will grow the fan base in these other cities, get more people interested in the Nix and in footie, more coming to home games in future seasons.....

We are getting one extra home match this season, the Palmy one....and there are others hoping to keep the season tickets prices the same so its impossible to keep everyone happy.  Last season the grumble was too many Sunday matches, this season its the cost of trave for "our" home gamesl, or the fact that two home games are taken "away" from us loyal home fans.....

Just be happy we have a club, our club, a club moving forward, doing good things both on and off the pitch.........jeez fellas, sometimes I wish I had more happy pills to share around!

Share the love, spread the word......Fever on Tour!!!

Actually, your cost concerns have got me thinking. Let's charter a train - even with a family carriage or two. Serious. Cheaper way of getting there. Great marketing ploy.

Wrong,

The mainland 11 isn't just 'some team'.. top players in the south island  molded together and we got 6500+ for it not 4k. 4k was at the preseason game two years ago.

Sure, Kapitinix,  It will certainly cost us to travel away to Christchurch to support the Phoenix. For a lot of people this is going to be a challenge.
Positively though, we have got NINE MONTHS  to plan and save for this! I'll bet a few people will be posting in the Dangerous Liasons thread, looking to share rides, meet up, telling us of cheap flights, accomodation and pubs to meet at etc.
Its going to be GREAT,an adventure to spread the YF love around.
Terry,Tony and the Team should be congratulated for spreading the Phoenix Fan Network wider with acceptable alternative NZ venues for our designated home games, rather than giving that revenue back to Aussie clubs.. no way!

Palmy or Christchuch ?  It's a fine line.
