It's just a bit of whimsical British humour, slightly daft and a bit of a wind up of sports stars who are not renowned for having a sense of humour. Check out Viv Anderson - he took it the right way and had a laugh.

Seems a bit pointless. Why would anyone care what footballers like on their dinner plate?

It's funny - Four Four Two magazine (the English original) have those segments too - very funny - most of the time the interviewees play along.
