Surely after this Capello will have learned that Defoe and Downing both are not, repeat ARE NOT international standard. I haven't seen the game but both were withdrawn at half-time with the score at 0-0. Joe Cole comes on and gets 2 in ten minutes. The very fact that Stewart Downing can start ahead of Joe Cole to me raises serious questions about Capello.

Booed off at halftime too apparently.

Fabio Capello, in excluding Michael Owen, had insisted only players in peak condition would be in his team. Joe Coles exclusion then could only be explained by the slight calf strain he has been carrying.
and again referring to Cole.
He alone had the answer to Andorras brutal brand of anti-football.

Apparently Capello got sh*tty at Rooney and Cole for doing things on the pitch against his wishes. Well maybe that's because players should at times be able to make decisions of their own regarding the state of the game.
It's becoming clear to me that a few players aren't exactly on Capello's side. I hope it gets sorted, but if he continues to pick players like Downing and Defoe then it's no wonder that he's taking a lot of flak.

This Capello criticism won't do. No it won't do!!

Fabio wears great glasses and gesticulates better than any other manager in the modern game! OK?

I do indeed. Croatia have never been beaten in a competitive international at the Maksimir and England are playing rubbish atm.

I'd give Capello at least a year or 2 before putting his future into serious question. He needs to right a fair few wrongs but I think he's the man to do it, more clever than the media give him credit for. Its alot about attitude, N.I beat Spain with the likes of Keith Gillespie still playing for them at 33 or so, surely we can agree that Downing is probably a bit better than him, its just a case of giving him a boot up the ass and proving it.

Steven Gerrad is much more effective in the central midfield and Joe Cole should start this thursday

Understand this. I got "my opinion" from, strangely enough, myself. I hadn't even read the papers and generally don't; if you'd checked you'd have seen that my comment was made about 2 minutes after the game had finished. I was commenting based on two things.
One; the fact that they were withdrawn at halftime with England doing poorly. I think it hardly likely that Capello would withdraw a couple of players at halftime against Andorra and the score at 0-0 to give them both a rest after forty-five minutes of scintillating football from both.
Two; the previous performances of both players in an England shirt. Neither has ever proved that they are of the desired quality at international level. admittedly, both are good club players, but how many chances do they deserve? Defoe scored an excellent goal on debut way back and has dome bugger all since; Downing has around 25 england caps now (a guess) and can claim, from memory, 45 minutes against Trinidad and Tobago as his "step up to international class" time. Not good enough.
Also I said straight up very early that I had not seen the game. It was obvious therefore that my opinion was based on other things.
And what gives you the right to assume that I'm against Capello because he is a foreigner? Total crap. FFS, I'm a foreigner, Kiwi born and bred, so it's unlikely that I'm going to be as xenophobic about the topic as a lot of the English. I was very vocal (both in person and in the media) in my opposition to both McLaren's appointment and his reign. That's because he wasn't up to the job. I was largely in favour of Ericsson during his reign and would be the same with Capello if I thought he was doing things right. I don't. That's my opinion. If he turns things around I'll be leaping about the pub chanting his name like everyone else.
But to suggest that I'm against him because of his race is insulting.
And finally, I'm not going to swear but will ask the following; do you enjoy sex and travel?

Ahem. I seem to recall that the mighty England's recent record against Macedonia isn't the flashest either. As for our hopes being dashed? Nah. Long way to go yet, particularly in light of Norway's draw in their first game. Got to get the 3 away points against Iceland tho'. Right, sorry for butting in to an England weeping and gnashing of teeth session but couldn't let your wee comment go without some sort of reply.

Well, no shame in losing to Macedonia, they're not a bad side. They beat us in the EURO qualifying over there, so I'm certainly not the one to speak ill of them...
The comment about WC hopes being dashed related to the difficulty of being among the top second placed qualifiers with these points dropped now...since I guess most people expect the Dutch to win that group fairly easily.

By the way, don't think I was having a dig at your lads, I actually have a fair amount of sympathy for them.

welcome Rod.  I have no idea why I am responding to a question from you in this thread, as I thought you spent all your time on here in the thread about user names acting like Rik off the Young Ones ("hey eveyone, what do you think of my name? Its great, isn't it?").  But thanks for getting involved, and here is my response.

1) Giving opinions on something that you know nothing about is pointless and a waste of everyone's time.  Picture the scenario:

person 1 - "I am planning a world trip, where I will go to America, England, France and Thailand"
person 2 - "I haven't been to Thailand, but don't go there.  It is a sh*t country, it smells funny, and an underage prostitute will give you a disease that will make your cock fall off."

Do you imagine person 1 would change his trip based on this advice?  I would like to hope not.  If person 2 said "I was there last week, and look - no cock", then they would be coming from a position of knowledge, but once they say they haven't been there, they should just shut up.

note - that analogy worked better in my head, but I hope you get the idea.

2) the england squad is just that - a squad.  England were playing andorra so it is the perfect time to give squad players like Downing and defoe a game.  There are arguements against having Defoe there at all (personally I think he is about the best of a pretty average batch - Crouch, Ashton, Agbonlahor - remember Owen was considered not fit enough by Capello who watched him play 90 minutes the day before he announced the squad) but name some better left wingers who should be in the squad ahead of Downing?  You wouldn't be sl*gging Capello off more if Cole got injured yesterday before the Croatia game, and there was (yet again) no reconginsed left winger in the squad to play today?  we wouldn't all be going on about square pegs in round holes again?

Any manager of any team will get 'advice' on who they should be picking, and that is part and parcel of the job (personally I think Terry shouldn't be in the starting 11).  But at least wait until he has managed the team in a (real) competitive fixture before we start jumping on bandwagons.  Friendlies don't count.

3) I see Brockie has been dropped from the AW team for the game today.  I didn't see the game the other day, but I think that it proves that he is not good enough for the AW's or for the Nix.

It is an opinion, but as it is based on nothing, I imagine that you will all ignore it.

1) Giving opinions on something that you know nothing about is pointless and a waste of everyone's time.  Picture the scenario:

How can you say I know nothing about the situation? Do you know anything about about me? Just because I didn't watch Downing and Defoe play 45 minutes of football doesn't mean my opinion is invalid. Does the fact that I didn't see that 45 minutes completely invalidate any opinion I may have on both players? I think not.
I have in fact watched both play many times at both club and international level. I have seen enough of them to be able to form an opinion and I consider that my years of following and writing about the game gives my opinion some validity. And anyway, too bad if it doesn't - it's my opinion and I've a right to express it without being told to f**k off as soon as I do so.
The very fact that I am an England supporter (and have given my money to the FA on many occasions both through ticket and merchandise purchases) gives me the right to express my opinion and for you to suggest I know nothing about the situation and should therefore shut up shows that you really should spend less time hanging out with your good friends Mary Whitehouse and Tipper Gore.

you know nothing about the situation BECAUSE YOU DID NOT SEE THE GAME!!!!!!

you basically said that this performance proves they are not up to international standard because they got dragged at half time when you know nothing about how they played (you said yourself that your opinion had not come from any other external sources).  downing might have been brilliant and then got injured - defoe replaced only because a change of tactics were required (hitting long to big man).  You don't know these things yet say that you hope Capello sees what you can see.  If your saw nothing of their performance, then I would have thought that we would be hoping he saw a lot more.

You talk about how much money you spend supporting England, and then sl*g off the players who are there - seems a bit strange to me.  the "I'm a real supporter because I spent 1000 to get to this game to boo the team" attitude is one I cannot understand.

I have also never said you are not entitled to an opinion on players.  I  just said you cannot have  opinions on things you know nothing about -  like the performance of players versus Andorra.

I do not know a Mary Whitehouse or a Tipper Gore.  I know a Mary johnson, but I am not sure how that is relevant to this conversation.

PS I see Nelson got dragged tonight.  He should never play for NZ again as he is obviously not up to it anymore.

so let me just get this straight.

you feel that you are right to claim that downing and defoe's performance on Saturday was bad enough to prove to Capello that they should not be in the squad, even though you did not see it and had not read anything about the way they played when you made that statement?

If so, that is fine.

On another topic (that I raised earlier), who should replace Downing in the squad?  There is no point in getting rid of a player and not replacing him, is there?
