Colchester United - Up The U's!

I've done a search of the forums, and I think I must be the only Colchester United fan here.

Alas!

I'm a first generation Kiwi, but my folks were from the UK, and Dad was a proud Colchester lad.  Mum also spent a great deal of her early life in that town.

A couple of years ago, my wife and I went to the UK on our O.E. and an old friend of Dad's contacted the club.  They put an article about us in their match day programme, which was really touching, as Dad had passed away the year before.

I only found out later that if I'd been in touch with the club earlier, they would have given me a tour of their facilities!

The stadium was half empty for the match we went to, but it was still a louder and more cohesive atmosphere than a regular Warriors match, despite having a fraction of the number of people.

Football matches anywhere, apart from Fred Taylor Park, will have louder crowds and better atmosphere than rugby and league games in NZ. (and I'm a Warriors season ticket holder!)

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Jag!  I recognise the name!  David Taylor here...

Yep, season ticket holder from 1999 to 2009.  Not a bad run, but we can't keep it up being out of town, and all.

I think part of the reasons for teh difference in crowds is that there's a certain air of apathy in New Zealand.  We keep telling ourselves it's a game, when the British constantly remind themselves that it's a war.

At least you've got the right city (football-wise, anyway).

My grandmother, (99 less than a month ago!), is 100% Scots and she hails from Glasgow, which makes me a (brace for it) Rangers fan.

But as far as tourism goes, even my Mum said the best thing you can do in Glasgow is get on a train to Edinburgh!

Dunno. Don't frequent that place any more. Far too much stupid in there for my liking. You get a better class of stupid in here

Still wearing my wristband with pride, btw.

Better shut up now before we get asked to get a room!

Colchester - 30 miles north of Basildon/Wickford (where I spent a bit of growing up time).

Think we might have visited there once - it's got a cathedral or castle of note hasn't it?

Also if a Glaswegian lass and an Essex chap can get along then there is hope for the Israel-Palestine and North-South Korea conflicts.

I'm impressed that you're still wearing the wristband.  We've taken ours off so that we can frame them with a certificate I got as a result of the fundraising before the bands break.

I counted three Kiwis wearing them during the Four Nations final, too.  It obviously still means something to the players.  There's a YouTube clip that summarises what we did, just in case you never saw it.  Just look up Sonny Fai Wristbands, or something along those lines.

This is shocking...I go to the English section of a football forum and end up talking about New Zealand rugby league with a Scotsman!

So um...yeah...step forward Colchester fans, and we'll try to get this train back on its rails!

I've only been there once, so I'm not sure about the cathedral (i.e. what it's like or if it even exists) but it does have a castle that's built on the ruins of a Roman fort.  Colchester is Britain's oldest town, and it's where Boudica ran riot way back in the early ADs.

It also has a great bookshop, but of course I'm going to say that if my aunt and cousin run it...

Haha...I'm not sure how Jag will feel about being called a Glasgow lass, but it's better than you calling me an Essex girl!

Yep - that's it. Thanks (the castle - not the bookshop).

See, Boudicea and her Icenii should have just painted on the walls "Romnes eunt domus" (in woad) rather than run around with bronze weapons and ride in Chariots with knives on the wheels.

Either that or send a message to Chief Vitalstatistix and Getafix the druid.

Hehe - was referring to you parents.

Jag is a caring, doting parent - so in a way he's a big Jessie.

Ah, I see!  Haha...Mum was born in Devon, actually.  her father was English, but her Mum was Scottish.

Dad was actually from the village of Great Horkesley, which is (I think) a bit to the Northwest of Colchester.  It's tiny!

Always had a soft spot for Colchester United due to it being the club that gave us the legendary Perry Groves.

I presume that you're a Gunners fan, then?

Did you hear that Groves got signed as a non-playing squad member for Chester this year as part of a radio deal to get the club some money?
