I think the idea sky were shocked is naive. Broadcasting is changing rapidly.

Netflix is already hurting their Movies business.

EPL was an obvious target, given their large number of simultaneous games in the 3pm Sat slot, even a sat broadcaster like Sky is poorly placed to meet this demand.

Note that one large rights package to Indonesia, NZ, and the pacific islands was sold, the rights were sub-sold to Coliseum in NZ.

I suspect the wider idea is we are a test market to look at how large market sports rights are sold direct without the bundling of all the other crud on sports channels.

As i have already said - it makes news corp recent exit highly dubious.

Here is a good summary: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/soccer-football/news/article.cfm?c_id=86&objectid=10906681

I am procrastinating over this.

Pros

  • can watch Toon and Spurs on demand - at civilised times
  • Telecom gives 15% discount (plus already has increased data cap)
  • if I watch the games then I get out of mowing the lawns
Cons
  • finding time to watch two more games of footy, in addition to Nix games
  • it will cost $127.50, as opposed to me finding some free dodgy stream at 3 am on a Sunday or Monday morning (which in reality has only happened a handful of times)

Ubbergunner, doesn't all of that still make it a good thing? Its all a lot better than we had previously. The renewal of the bid will be interesting for sure.

I can re-work $10 extra a month through our budget, and we're on one (not large) income with kids (well, one kid and one on the way). Serious fans go to these lengths.

Sorry for implying that others aren't serious fans, just saying that I am, and having all these channels is critical for my wellbeing!

I'm on Telecom, so it's $127.50 for a year = 10.63 per month

Has there been any discussion on the fact that Sommet says they will be broadcasting live on their website as well?

From the 'About' section of sommetsports.co.nz -

"Sommet Sports is launching a free to air sports channel on the Kordia terrestrial Freeview platform. If you are outside of this coverage area or wish to watch the channel on a computer, tablet or smart phone we will be streaming video of our channel live on the internet at this website."

to be fair my decision is all based around time. 3 small kids doesn't leave much time on the weekends to watch a full epl game, and I cant be arsed getting up at 5am to 'make time'.

so sky, highlights and footytube is the way for me to go at the moment.

Personal cost:benefit analysis is very promising
Family cost:benefit not so much

Also a budgeting thing as well.  Nix season tickets, AW 20 Nov game, travel/accomm for Napier game.  All certainties so spending another $127 although very cost effective per game is not a "no-brainer" decision.  Other things like rates and school fees/activities tend to push out these luxuries.
I've been without English footy since the days of Big League Soccer and free-to-air FA Cups.  Surprisingly I have got by and the sun still rises in the mornings (mostly).

farken kids. I vowed never to watch delayed, ever. What a silly short-sighted vow that was. I'm already watching probably 50% of Arsenal games delayed and the number of kids is still growing.

Pretty sure all PLP games can be watched delayed at least once within a week.

I meant the part about getting out of the lawns! Honestly though, English football is really not that great. I'd say you're better off without the extra cost, to be honest. Going to the Nix/ AW games is much, much better than paying money which you don't necessarily have all the time for some game on the other side of the world. In my opinion, of course.

Yep - fully agree.

Emotionally Spurs and Toon will always come before the Nix for me, but the NIx is a family thing for us.

Edit: And of course nothing beats live footy.  Except more live footy.

Incidentally, the new iSKY is launching this weekend and they appear to have some new magic DRM on sky sports 1&2, which means it doesn't fookin work on linux (firefox) anymore on those sports channels. That's useful. eeeeediots. (It doesn't seem happy on chrome either.)

At least PLP does (yay!)

250 can be viewed multiple games. The rest can be viewed once - live or on demand.

According to their FAQs

Yea man this has been covered. Every game can be viewed once, live or otherwise (but has to be viewed within a week I think). Plus 60% or so of the games will also be available 'on demand' to be watched as often as you like.

Techno-luddite question:  If you view games on-demand  (i.e. not live) - will the viewing be more reliable (won't cut out)?

Possibly, depending on how they set things up. It's likely that it will be faster as it will be able to load into the future, like YouTube does.

The Asian trophy game I watched seemed to be set up like that and didnt cut out once. It is something I worried about. The first live game will be interesting
