Sky TV has been outbid for the rights by an internet start up company.
While Sky founder Craig Heatley's new 818 venture has been linked to the news, Coliseum EPL Management Limited has been registered with the Companies office.
Matthew Cockram and Timothy Martin are registered with the Companies Office as the directors of Coliseum.
Cockram is one of the drivers behind the redevelopment of Britomart in Auckland.
It's understood further details about Coliseum's plans will come to light next week."

PROBLEM AS I SEE IT:
(1) While Sky retain rights to Phoenix and A-League, All Whites, Football Ferns (although as mentioned above in thread, less people watch "the top four EPL games than a Phoenix game"), still a lot of people will think "Stuff paying Sky TV $74 / month for Basic and Sports - I'm off to "Coliseum" for unlimited EPL coverage for only $180 - $200 per annum."
This will lead to lower viewing figures for Phoenix and All Whites matches etc. on Sky
(2) If you want to continue watching both EPL - and Phoenix, All Whites, UEFA Champions Lge etc. it costs a lot more now: $888 / year for Sky ($74 / week for Basic and Sport) PLUS $180 - $200 / year for Coliseum (quoted in media - could be more).
PLUSES:
(1) More choice of football to watch with Coliseum covering leagues not covered by Sky like Serie A and French Ligue 1
(2) Will it force Sky to get its act together more and screen more football?
(3) Much cheaper if you're only interested in the EPL rather than Kiwi football (most British and other immigrants fall in this camp in my experience).
So new consortium has Serie A, Ligue 1 & EPL (Is chasing La Liga)
Sky has All Whites (2012), A-League + Champs League & MLS through ESPN
Sommet has Bundesliga, Championship, League 1, League 2, Europa League, League Cup & Argentinian League (Also FA Cups from around the world, Chelsea TV & looking to get one other club to allow two delayed games a week)
Hmmm I think looking at this that Sky may have some competition for the WC coverage as well.
From articles today Coliseum is in talks with at least one Telco about broadcasting in different mediums...(Vodafone? Looking to add some different stuff to their Telstra TV?), or are they just talking internet & phones?
Sommet has the rights to show games live or to show a highlights package??

TVNZ has done little to actively challenge Sky, especially following the cancelling of 6 and 7 and the charter. Can't see them doing anything but being whipped.
A Wellington Phoenix game rates higher than the top 4 EPL games in any weekend put together. Fascinating.

The share price drop may be a response to the emergence of two genuine competitors rather than to the loss of the EPL rights per se. The loss of the EPL rights could be merely a signal that there are two genuine choices to those disaffected with the high cost of SKY, and not an indication of the value of the EPL overall to SKY.

Hopefully Sky buys back the rights after noone signs up for this, $25 for a day, you have to be having a laugh. $180 a year equals about $5 to watch every Arsenal game, that's more than I pay for Sky Sport a week.

$150 doesn't seem like a bad price (roughly equivalent to a Nix season ticket).
Ability to watch on a mobile device is a significant advantage (and through AppleTV if you are iOS).
Cost of streaming that much data will be significant but hope for maybe an unmetered deal with ISPs to come? Data coming down in price quite a bit these days anyway.
Not sure why all games can't be on demand. Compared with ability to record on MySky or Telstra T-Box that seems like a disadvantage.

Yip, if all you have is Freeview then with Sommet Sports coming on the scene and some free EPL on TVNZ you are now significantly better off as a footy fan. On balance I think this is a big boost for football in NZ. NZF should be considering jumping ship to one of Sommet or Coliseum also. Then the only issue is the A-League.
Of course, this will only be the situation for the next year or two until all the rights get re-negotiated and go back on the merry-go-round again.

When are a-league rights back up for renewal in NZ? with two new serious players on the scene this could get interesting. The only challenge i can see is that with a-league games as well as All whites in NZ the games are produced by sky ( i far as i'm aware) so would a new rights holder have to take this over? a bit trickier then merely buying the rights to a satellite feed

WOW !!! EPL matches for free on TV One - will really promote football amongst the casual viewers. My elderly football- mad parents will love this (they don't have Sky). Even better than the old days of "Big League Soccer" on a Sunday lunchtime back in the 70's and 80's:

I didn't think it was illegal to watch streamed games on the web - it is illegal to stream them without the correct authorisation, but if someone does that it is not illegal to watch them.
And who really cares about the cover art or the tracks being out of order if illegally downloading an album?
