No Owen, Crouch recalled, no Young or Gabby Ag, yet Downing and Defoe are both there.
But then again, I didn't actually see the squad being named, so I shouldn't really comment.....

ENGLAND SQUAD: James (Portsmouth), Green (West Ham), Carson (West Brom); Brown (Manchester United), Johnson (Portsmouth), Terry (Chelsea), Ferdinand (Manchester United), Lescott (Everton), Upson (West Ham), A Cole (Chelsea), Bridge (Chelsea); Beckham (Los Angeles Galaxy), Walcott (Arsenal), Barry (Aston Villa), Jenas (Tottenham), Lampard (Chelsea), Gerrard (Liverpool), Downing (Middlesbrough), Wright-Phillips (Manchester City); Heskey (Wigan), Crouch (Portsmouth), Rooney (Manchester United), Defoe (Portsmouth).

SWP has done well to earn his call back up into the squad. Good effort from the little man!

Yeah, I thought he'd be back. Brown I'm a bit surprised by given he's been dropped by United (and is, as I've said before, horribly overrated). And Michael Owen has surely been doing enough lately to be in the squad, if not the starting team.
Again I'll ask, why do England persevere with Stewart Downing and Jermaine Defoe?

Jermaine Defoe has been on fire this season though, if they can get him to replicate his Pompey form at international level they will be sorted.

I daresay the golden boot table has convinced Capello that Defoe is worth another chance:

Has he? I just saw him score in the highlights of Man Utd against Blackburn. Soccernet says he's played in 4 of Man U's 6 matches - only 5 players have played more.

Actually, talking of highlights, did you see Crouch's goal from the weekend? A spectacular overhead kick. In the interview, he said he was pleased as those can so often go wrong and make you look silly.... was I the only one to think of that overhead he tried in 2006 where he came out looking really silly? I can't remember - was it against Trinidad & Tobago in round one?

But they do have News, as mentioned. Gabby Agbonlahor and Ashley Young are far, far superior players. Defoe is looking good at club level as he often does, but he's proved time and time again that he's not quite good enough to step up.

I wonder why Kevin Davies always gets dubbed Kevin 'Cyril' Davies by soccernet? It's not a middle name I'd want to shout about.

Was reading on another forum about a potential England call up for Almunia. What would you lads make of it all?

Personally i'd love to see it although i do understand he needs to earn it first but if he does surely he's worth a punt.

Three for me, and two for them.

I'm not sure though that either Agbonlahor or Young are really replacements for Defoe, young definitely not, he operates much more in the channels without his back to goal.

Bentley is just playing so badly he couldn't be picked.

How does Jenas still get picked, I've never seen him dominate a game at club level let alone internationals...he's just not up to it!

Almunia, the red tops would have a field day, it won't happen.  Did you see the furore when Darren Pattinson (basically an aussie) was called up by the england cricket team?  It was like he'd conspired against them, and this was in the broad sheets!

I think Agbonlahor could do the striker's role for England. he's able to play either out wide or up front with Carew, playing off him. Certainly a better option than Defoe IMHO.
Ashley Young is just a straight swap for Stewart Downing. I can understand Defoe's selection a lot more than I can understand Downing's. I mean, what's he ever done at international level? Hell, even at club level he's only slightly above the level of an average Premiership player. I'd be interested to hear the opinions of any Boro' fans on here.
As for Almunia, this was first mentioned a year or so ago. Why not? It's not a lot different to John Barnes playing for England.

Jam - it's not like John Barnes playing for England. Barnes settled in England as a boy and grew up in England.

A better analogy would be Deco playing for Portugal. Deco didn't leave Brazil for Portugal until he was 20 and was already a professional football player. Unlike Barnes, his sole purpose for taking up Portuguese citizenship was to play international football.

I'd be opposed to Almunia's selection and I'd be surprised if it was a genuine possibility. Having a non-national manager is a reluctant thing, but having a non-national player is well over the line. Anyway, he first has to apply and get UK citizenship. Being Spanish and an EU citizen, I doubt he would have any reasons to do this apart from "doing a Deco".

How long has he been resident in England? I read somewhere that FIFA were possibly upping the residency requirement for new citizenships from 2 to 5 years (but I'm not sure when or if that is happening).

The role of goalkeeper with stupid hair in the England squad is already taken by David James.

Also Almunia qualifies as an English citizen through his English wife.

What about Hargreaves though? Yes his parents were English but he never lived in the country until he was signed for United, yet no one seems to have any problems with his selection.

Besides, at least Almunia seems to want to play for England unlike some players *cough*Carragher*cough*

Almunia qualifies to apply for Citizenship via his wife. He doesn't get it unless he applies, though it should be a formality. He still has to satisfy FIFA's residency rules on second citizenships.

Hargreaves is a good example, as you say. He has always held UK citizenship though, having acquired it at birth.

Carragher, Scholes, Shearer... yeah agree. I hate seeing a player retire themselves from national selection whatever their country. "In my day" you retired from international football when the manager stopped pick you and not before. Bah!

Good point. Scholes' retirement from international football was so damned selfish. He was only 29 with a few years of international football ahead.
To my mind, Scholes is an arsehole, forget the whole "low profile" crap, he's a parasite, just take what you can.

That 'low profile' is why his retirement isn't talked about. Unlike Carragher's who has been highly publicised through various radio interviews and his autobiography.
