New Zealand football fans are set to miss live coverage of the FA Cup final for the first time in more than 35 years.

The All Whites' World Cup qualification has boosted football's popularity, but no New Zealand broadcaster has picked up the rights to next month's showpiece between English football clubs Chelsea and Portsmouth.

Last year, TVNZ screened Chelsea's win over Everton.

A TVNZ spokeswoman said the broadcaster picked up the rights to last year's final cheaply, but funds were going towards World Cup coverage this year.

A disappointing audience of 20,000 watched the match last year, she said.

Representatives for TV3 and Maori TV confirmed they had not bought the broadcast rights.

The Press understands Sky Television lodged an unsuccessful bid for the rights to the match.

Just wondering, how many viewers you need so it would not be disappointing??

BTW they still fail to inform us in the article when and what time the game is kicking off.

Well, before match I will look for some good and reliable streams and post them up if anyone is interested?

All this in hope that the frozen c**t we know as Telecom has reset my internet by then.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

This is a disgrace that the FA Cup on not live on TV in NZ. If Oz can do it on free to air, so should NZ

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

This year is the year for football in New Zealand, just like next year will be the year for Rugby, so why do the TV companies in NZ continue to shoot themselves in the foot? Let football have it's year. It's not that hard is it?

I don't get this Nielsen rating system. How can 5,000 people is an adequate representation sampling of NZ or any country?? Does the 25 people in the 5,000 sample accurately represent 20,000 people in the population??? 5,000 is typically not adequate sized sample for 4 million, it would fail variance testing, the SD is not large enough etc etc.

[I beat that 1250 out of the 5,000 are Aucklanders and so it is bias from the start.]

It is on the anti-siphoning list in Australia which means it MUST be shown on Free to Air. I suspect SBS will show it.

This has be going on for years. They have threatened almost every year for 20 years that they are not going to show the FA Cup. If enough people start complaining it usually works. I am pretty sure that the FA final has been on live every year in NZ since 1973.

It's been "Live" every year since 1973 with one exception. 1974 - Newcastle 0 Perennial strugglers Liverpool 3. The BBC were having industrial action and the telecast was delayed for a few hours. There after every game has been "Live". This year will be the first I have missed on TV. I'm gutted.

Told our Pompey Tiler about the no-showing. He rang up Sky and was advised that they were putting in a bid.... Totally unofficial of course, but watch this space.

He did say tho' that if they wern't going to show it, he would fly out to a mates place in Sydney.....long way to fly, only to see your team get d*cked.

A guy from The Silver Fern has started a partition to try to convince one of the TV companies to show the FA cup final on TV in New Zealand.

Go and sign up if you feel the same

Petition comments read
According to TVNZ, their broadcast of last year's final gathered only 20,000 viewers although I wonder whether they factored in the 5 of us sitting in my front room in our traditional FA Cup gathering.

That's about the same audience as Q&A then??
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

i didnt really think 20,000 viewrs is to bad, considering its a game being played by two teams on the other side of the world and at an earlyish time

Yep, I told him that, but the Broadband in our (rural) area is a bit scratchy.. Mind you John Key's office is just down the road.  Perhaps he can start the Infrastructure improvements here. Coz he (we) would need to test it out before rolling out to the rest of the country
