Former football star Frank McAvennie has denied fighting in a bar on the Isle of Man.

The ex-Scotland, Celtic and West Ham United striker pleaded not guilty to charges over the incident at the Aperitivo wine bar in Loch Promenade, Douglas, on the evening of July 4.

McAvennie was on the island to take part in a Manchester United versus Liverpool Legends charity match alongside Andy Goram, Denis Irwin and Bruce Grobbelaar at the Bowl sports stadium, but missed the game following his arrest.

Glasgow-born McAvennie, 48, who now lives in Newcastle and works as a football agent, appeared at the High Bailiff's Court in Douglas wearing a black pinstripe suit, white shirt and black tie.

He spoke only to confirm his name and address before entering two not guilty pleas to charges of affray and disorderly behaviour on a licensed premises.

Deputy High Bailiff Alastair Montgomerie bailed McAvennie, and told him he was free to leave the island.

He was also excused from attending a hearing on September 30 when a date for his trial, which is expected to last half a day, will be set.

McAvennie and his advocate, Jeremy Carter, both said "no comment" to reporters outside court.

Local man Ian Charles Moffitt, 23, was also charged with affray following the incident.

He pleaded not guilty to the offence on September 2, and faces a further hearing on November 12 at the same court.
