Best wishes to the Genius Paul Gascoine.

Talent often comes with mental turmoil, George Best & Vincent Van Gogh to name but 2.

just seen the headline haven't read the piece on soccernet yet

he's certainly been through the mill, as is made clear in his books - from them he comes across as a fairly caring bloke but with a whole lot of personal issues

as a footballer he was one of the best of his generation imo, but he would have been hell to room with on tour!

The reaction tothis story,  makes me glad (again) that I live in NZ

at least one English club site has a fair few unsympathic - bordering on nasty/ignorant posts re Gazza

I know NZ is no land of 'saints' but we don't seem quite as keen to put the boot into someone when they are down as is the case in England.

I don't understand the level of sympathy that people like Gazza and Best get, to be honest.  If there is a story in the paper about the normal bloke who has a drink problem, and beats up his wife, we all think "coward - send the fcuker down".  If a bloke is good at kicking a ball and does the same, we also "tortured genius, such a shame, seems a great bloke with a few issues, etc".

the grief and sorrow when Best died made me embarrassed.  The guy got special chances because who he was (someone who was good at kicking a ball) such as being moved up the list to get a new liver (ahead of more deserving people - ie people who fcuked their own one up due to their negligence) and then he continued to drink till that one was fcuked.  That made the guy a first class c**t in my eyes.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Perhaps it's more to do with acknowledging the pressures of being in the spotlight all of the time?

Pressure? In the words of  a Sheffield Wednesday player (when Wednesday were top tier) as spoken on Match of the Day. He was asked about the pressure of the Christmas/New Year programme. He started to laugh then said,...    "some weeks I have to work for THREE hours. Most days I am home by 130pm and I get really well paid. Pressure? No I don't think so..."
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Bullseye Frankie, my thoughts exactly. Gazza is a fool untoo himself, talented footballer but even then he wasted it especially with that stupid tackle against Forest.

If he had been a non footballer he'd have got 3 years inside for the wife bashing in the UK. Here in NZ you get Home Detention so you can give her a repeat performance...but thats another thread.

I'd love to be "under-pressre" on his money. What he earned in a week would have been a years salary for me and I have much more responsibility.

Try living in a humble house in a humble neighbourhood.

On the sort of money players are on today, the only real pressure is making (& getting well paid for) public appearances at some shop openning. Or if you're an Englishman, making a first team appearance at Arsenal.

Seriously, with the training today etc, players have a lot of free time to do their own projects.

I was referring to pressure in the form of public/media scrutiny, as opposed to training pressure.

I'm inclined to agree Arsenal, players who have an existing or potential pyschological 'issue'/susceptibility would need a fair bit of support to deal with the media pressures

I doubt any of us can imagine the affects of media attention courtesy of the British tabloid press
