Hello New Meadow. Lots of new grounds built or being built in England. Must be plenty of money sloshing around. Anyone been to Gay Meadow? Or know of any other clubs moving to new grounds? http://www.newmeadow.com/ sanday2007-05-16 09:21:39

I never went when I was in the UK, but that was because I didn't own a boat. Didn't it use to flood every season due to t'river next door?

BTW, who are Shrewsbury's all-time heroes? Wasn't John Dungworth there for a while? If so, he should be a hero, great name.

i havent gone to GM before, however i am planning a trip over november-may 2008-2009 to the New Meadow, hopefully to watch them play for a spot in the championship *Fingers crossed*

sadly the GM does have a tendancy to hold a bit of moisture...but nothing is ever perfect.

im not sure about John Dungworth, but the great Mr Moyes was a Shrew once upon a time (1986-1990?)

as for other 'all time heroes' Arthur Rowley would probably be a good starting point, have a look at his wikipedia page:

In the summer of 1958 Rowley left Leicester, who were playing in the First Division, to become the player-manager of Shrewsbury Town of the newly-created Fourth Division. In his first season at the Gay Meadow Rowley led Shrewsbury to promotion with a haul of 38 goals in 43 games. He spent the next six years as a player with the club, during which time he scored a total of 152 league goals.

of course thats not to say there havent been many many other greats, but still, i think that his record is something to be admired

Arthur Rowley holds the record for most league goals scored, from memory.
I'm pretty sure John Dungworth was a Shrew, I know he was with Aldershot for quite a while. Could search the net I guess to check these claims but that's cheating IMHO.
And John Dungworth's nickname should have been Wotsya...

I went to the Meadow once in about 88/89.  Dull as dishwater 0-0 draw between the Shrews and Sunderland.  An absolute nothing ground.

Saw Shrewsbury in the mid 70's at the Meadow against Plymouth. Bit of scrap on the  way to the ground with "  us Shrewbury supporters leaving the pub for 5 minutes to deal to them " then back to drinking. They had a guy whose job was to retrieve footballs from the river, using a row boat. He  had a seat on half-way line.Saw them play about 6 matches, GOOD TIMES.footy not that great though.

Me dad was a policeman and ended up being posted To Shrewsbury in the late 70's for a bit. I was there for most home games and a few away ones when they won the old 3rd division. I think they beat Exeter 4-1 to clinch it if memory serves me right. I remember Ken Mulhearn who was the keeper. Right back Jake King. David Tong, and the main men Paul McQuire (Mcquire, mcquire, mcquire du du du du du) and Sammy Chapman. I was there when they beat Man City who were in the 1st division (premiership) 3-1 in the FA Cup. I seem to remember they had a near post flick on corner routine that fooled just about every team including the mighty Man City. Memory may cloud the details but I loved that season and it softened the blow of not being able to go to St James Park every week.
If the ball went over the riverside stand, a little fella in a coracle (a little round boat) had to paddle accross the river severn and retrieve it. They did an article on football focus about it every year.

Although I have spent all my life supporting the Toon I loved those seasons at the Gay Meadow and took the Shrews to my heart. Shame the old ground has to go.

I remember being with my Dad in the Away end when Newcastle played there. He was on duty and had a Newcastle scarf on under his uniform which the assembled Geordies thought was great so I saw that ground from all 4 sides.

Happy days and another piece of football history gone

Thanks for the reminder about the Man City tie.  I remember that!  It was a stunning result at the time.  I also remember going past Gay Meadow on the train from Aberystwyth when it was under water!

we may see history repeat at the New Meadow, IF/When Man City agree to play the friendly that was agreed in the Joe Hart transfer deal.

its meant to be the first game there....although with Pearce gone...
