That scentance is so badly written I can hardly tell what it
actually means.
Is it saying that Pelter was afforded plenty of opportunity
but filaed to impress?, or
That Pelter afforded his team plenty of opportunity, who
failed to impress? . . .

Yeah pretty poor English.
The way I read it was that he was given plenty of
opportunities to impress, but largely failed.
But then why would they single out one defender, unless he was
really, really bad.
Might check out some Sunderland boards and see what they've
said.

Just found this on another website...
Keane also gave triallist Jack Pelter 45 minutes to impress, but the New Zealand centre-half did not stand out.
In fact, had this been a competitive game, the 18-year-old might well have been sent off after hauling down Peter Winn when the sub was through on goal.
