And Panamanian Player...

(Which player was it in England, a couple of years ago who did similar?)

Guardian
Panamanian player discovers that kicking an owl is no hoot

Bird was struck by the ball in Colombian championship match
Lus Moreno faces censure after kicking owl towards touchline

A Panamanian player, Lus Moreno, has caused an uproar and faces severe punishment after kicking an owl which was lying on the pitch during a Colombian championship match at the weekend. Video footage showed that the bird was first struck by the ball near the Pereira penalty area during the match at Atltico Junior, prompting the referee to stop play.

As the referee and players discussed what to do, the Pereira defender Moreno apparently impatient over the delay, as his team were losing 2-1 was seen to kick the bird towards the touchline with his left foot.

"The player should be severely punished for this painful, horrible act of intolerance," Ramn Jesurum, the president of the Colombian league, said in a radio interview. He added that the case would go before the league's disciplinary committee.

Atltico Junior fans chanted "murderer" at the Panamanian player, according to Colombian media. Moreno was also reprimanded by opponents and he apologised after the game.

"I apologise to the fans, it wasn't my intention," he said, as he left the field escorted by radio reporters and police.

Colombian media said the owl had been rescued by ground staff and taken to a vet. Its condition was reported to be serious.

I've heard the Panamanian was told he couldn't hit a barn door.

Late news: the crtical condition of our feathered friend required a Tawny-que to be administered.

Sorry, that's an 'owler.

They'll be sending him to Owlcatraz by all accounts. Heard the gruel is terrible there. He'll be asking for Morepork after a few weeks inside.

Atletico Junior's gaffer has been sacked for allowing the mascot to be harmed. The new manager is widely tipped to be Chris Hooton.

Update:

Telegraph - Owl kicked by Deportivo Pereira's Luis Moreno dies
The owl at the centre of an international storm after it was kicked off the pitch by Luis Moreno, the Deportivo Pereira defender, during a league match in Colombia has died from shock.

The owl, which served as mascot for Atltico Junior, died in a local veterinary clinic in Barranquilla after veterinarian Camilo Tapia was unable to save the bird that was attacked by Moreno on Sunday.

Play during the Dimayor [the Colombian league] game was stopped after the bird was first struck by the ball near the Pereira penalty area prompting the referee to halt the game.

As the referee and players discussed what to do Moreno - apparently impatient over the delay with his team losing 2-1 - was seen to kick the bird towards the touch-line with his left foot before Atltico Junior fans chanted "murderer" at the Panamanian player.

Ramon Jesurum, president of Dimayor, said on Monday that "the player should be severely punished for this painful, horrible act of intolerance," before adding that the case would go before their disciplinary committee.

Menawhile Humberto Mendoza, the director of the agency that oversees environmental issues in Barranquilla, has said he will investigate possible sanctions against Moreno.

Panama international Moreno ordered to do community work at a zoo after infamous owl kick

Panama international Luis Moreno has been heavily fined and ordered to do community work at a zoo after infamously kicking an owl during a Colombian championship match.

It was the latest unhappy twist for Moreno who has already completed a two-match ban imposed by the league for the incident in February and is now serving a seven-match ban for kicking a grounded player in another game.
Pereira defender Moreno kicked the owl, regarded as a mascot by the home crowd, after it had strayed on to the pitch and been hit by the ball during his team's 2-1 defeat by Atletico Junior in the Caribbean city of Barranquilla.

F-Owl play: Luis Moreno kicked the defenceless bird in February
The city's Office for the Environment (DAMAB) slapped a 26.78 million Colombian peso (9,080) fine, equivalent to 50 times Colombia's minimum wage, on Moreno on Wednesday.

Moreno will also have to meet costs of 600,000 pesos for treatment of the owl, which died two days after the kicking incident, make a public apology to the city and do community work at the local zoo, DAMAB director Humberto Mendoza told the local daily newspaper El Tiempo.
