probably a short topic but worth a look on the news tonight (or any replays on Sky or the Prem round-up) for anyone with a nostalgic memory of shirts without names or sponsorship

really weird now, but it brought back a few great memories

As a sentimental old codger, I thought the Man Utd shirts looked great, and great to see the players numbered from 1 - 11 again.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Would have been better if they were in clunky old leather boots, kicking around a water-logged lump of pigskin too. Ah, good times, football in the park, jumpers for goalposts, marvellous.

I was watching highlights of a couple of manchester derbies on ESPN classic yesterday - 1980 at OT and 1983 at Maine Road, and it was brilliant.  Crap pitches (both of them looked like a tractor had driven over them before kick off), tiny shorts, keepers without gloves (they did in the 83 game), pass-backs to keepers, who had to bounce or roll the ball every 4 steps, and generally crap play.

I loved it.

Incidentally, later on ESPN classic they had highlights of the NZ vs SA game from the 92 cricket world cup - it bought a tear to my eye watching Fatty Lathem and Greatbatch smashing the ball all over Eden Park.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Was also great to see Van Der Sar wearing the standard green goalkeepers jersey that every team wore and the white shorts and black socks to match the rest of the team.

Yeah i watched the game and thought they looked quite good. Wonder if Fergie blamed the kits this time round?

Three for me, and two for them.

No this time it was the scheduling that was at fault.

Here's an article from the BBC Sport site which mentions that, I think it's quite funny:

that was a good read -  bit of humour, some very telling points about 'modern' football, and quite moving about his grandad - well worth a look imo

An the fact that Ronaldo was not allowed to wear his GEL, as none was available in 1958

I'd liked to have seen Ronaldo smack a 30 yard free kick with a water logged leather ball like we all used to as young fellas. I bet it would not travel as far and as fast!

I got the 3 DVD set of the BBC Match of the day and I love the first disk. 1960's/ 1970's. That Leeds team ripped Southampton 7-0 and put on a few party tricks too.

And with the heavier footballs from back then, Peter Lorimar had the fastest shot - 70 MPH when tested from a dead ball scenario.
