if you didint know, manchester city have some ambitious new owners, as showen by there signing of robinho and if it wearn't for some underhand tactics from alex ferguson, they would have there hands on berbatov as well.

the new owners clearly have the cash, and they seem ready and willing to spend it.

so do you think it will be a chelsea situation for the city? i for one dont, as when chelsea were purchased, they had already been a team that was slowly improving, starting to get places, man city however are a different beast(i dont mean that in an offensive way)

for a better worded explanation, check out the links below, both interesting to read, and feel free to post your thoughts on what will happen to city.

cheers people.

Yeah they have to win something first.

Still, it was good to see Chelsea out-spent.

well  abramovich said our spending would be slowing down anyway, i dont think we should splash out on big names, which we arent so thats great. if we win the prem no one can claim we bought it!

Too many big egos struggle at smaller clubs and leave when a big club shows interest. Will be interesting to see how Robinho goes there

You signed deco and then tried to sign robinho... hmm... nothing has changed my friend.

that is true, but i was meaning that our spending in comparison to our spending over previous years was a lot less. and besides, for the price we got deco at, he looks to be a steal.

Deco was signed for 8million squid and is already being touted as one of the top 5 value for money signings in the Prem.....

We tried to sign Robinho but had been talking for a while and for once we weren't willing to pay Real's over-inflated price for their player and were trumped by a team with new money and new ambition.

We have a great squad regardless of failing to clinch Robinho's signature and will have a great season under Scolari.

Gutted that Man U managed to grab Berba at the 11th hour but that's shrewd business and true to their style.....and the nous of Sir.

Should be a great season ahead.....

Back to the City debate....

I'm hoping it all blows up in their faces but in a crazy twisted way I'm hoping City do start pushing for cups and the league (just as long as they don't finish above Man Utd in anything)

Why would a Man U fan want to see city go ok you could possibly ask?
I want to see how life long Man sh*ty fans deal with their club becoming everything that they protest about in other clubs, foreign investment, buying above developing homegrown talent, glory hunting fans, fans who aren't from Manchester - good lord I can't wait for the day when there's large ammounts of City shirts being sold in Asia.
What on earth will the blue moon have left to taunt us about then? Will it be the proof that all their taunts are born out of jealousy and not principle?

135 million for 1 player?

That's ludicrous and completly uneconomical.

Even the Russian will choke on his beetroot soup, when he hears that.

Very good points made there...

I find it kind of exciting that this is happening. Will be cool to see if they become a force to be reckoned with and if it does indeed become a 'big five'.

If a few more investors get involved with other prem clubs, and there are 6/7 of them luring massive players in this manner, would there be a case for England to have more entries into the Champions League? Interesting thought...

Personally I liked it when the Champions League was just a league for champions.

Then again if that'd been the case in 1999, we would have never won the treble so I can't complain too much

Very good point made though joachim. The whole name 'Champions League' is flawed within itself, as it doesn't consist of only Champions and isn't a League. But no England don't deserve more entries into the CL for now in fact i think any more than the 4 at the moment would be a joke.

Three for me, and two for them.

This will ruin football.

It will do. It will bring with it financial regulation that wil probably lead to a lot of shouting and then a European super league.

Editor's Note It was only a matter of time when a Gulf entity entered the UK overseas football owners' club. With Emirates sealing a deal with Arsenal for stadium naming rights and T-shirts, Saudi Telecom signing a marketing deal with Manchester United and Dubai International Capital's on-and-off pursuit of Liverpool, regional investors have been nibbling around a piece of the lucrative UK football league industry for sometime now.

Without a doubt, there is also a bit of showmanship here - the key driver behind this deal Sulaiman Al-Fahim is known as a maverick entrepreneur seeking the limelight. Some would argue that the Abu Dhabi investors have probably paid too much for Manchester City, especially with all the other tantalising deals on offer for 200mn pounds in a depressed UK economy. But that would never have made the same sort of splash the Abu Dhabi entrepreneur was seeking. Fair play to him.

Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

True, but when you've got half the teams in the quarter finals...

one thing i am worried about is the current man city players, considering the new billionare on the block said he wants to bring in a minimum of 18 players to man city, so where does that leave some of the smaller names at man city?

Playing for Hull, Boro, Stoke and other bottom/middle table sides?
Permalink Permalink

yes that would probably be the case, as for the 18(or more) coming to city, judging by the names they are throwing around, im sure it will be another star studded team. i dont think they will make the top four this year, but next season they will probably be challengers. for them, it will either work brilliantly, of fail spectacularly. i cant wait to see what becomes of them.

Anyone else think that the morale in that camp must be pretty low despite the new owner and Robinho coming to the club?

After all knowing that more than half your team is probably getting the sack and not knowing who would be tough.

They'll be scattered off cheaply as new boys arrive, leading to other prem and championship clubs getting a few bargains. face it, if this guy's happy to be flicking off a 135 mil bid for that red poof he aint gunna worry about offloading a no namer for pennies.

i just hope Joe Hart keeps that #1 spot

unlikely as they have already been linked with a bid for Buffon in January.

I don't know if this has been talked to death already, but aren't there grumblings afoot that England has already become over represented in the Champions League as a result of being overly cashed up?

Little worried as Man City had some excellent young players coming through, Sturridge, Ched Evans, Michael Johnson, just wondering they're gunna be lost to all these big names coming through. Hopefully Mark Hughes isn't too overwhelmed by all this craziness as I think some of the best teams around are based on a core of a  few young local players who came through the system.

Hughes isnt silly, he'll look after them, even if it is a 6 month loan spell in a championship team in a bid to get game time.

I think that if results are going well and they're sitting in the top 4 the rich arab aint gunna get too involved, for now. i wouldnt be expecting a mass wave of 6+ new 'world class' signings in january without selling off some of the old furniture in the squad. most of the mentioned targets will be in the middle of the big parts of the CL so their clubs will be unwilling to sell (even though everyone has their price)

Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing Germany striker Lukas Podolski in the January transfer window.

GettyImages

Podolski celebrates in the rain for Germany

The club have money to spend after a takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group for Development and Investment (ADUG) and City's new Arab owners are ready to bankroll the captures of Europe's top talents.

Having landed Brazilian striker Robinho for 32.5million from under the noses of Chelsea, the club have also been linked with moves for Valencia hitman David Villa, Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo and Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

However, it appears the Bayern Munich marksman, 23, is also a top target and is currently unhappy at Bayern Munich.

He admitted in the Daily Mirror: "Everything is possible.

"I would be a bad footballer if I contented myself by sitting on the bench. I could tolerate it if it was a case of two or three weeks, but there comes a point when one has to draw the line and say: 'This is too much! I'm not making any progress here'."

Podolski has gone on record recently suggesting he could leave Bayern in January if he is not playing regularly, although the favourites to sign him are his former club FC Cologne.

The German was one of the stars of Euro 2008 and has smashed a staggering 30 goals in 56 matches for the national side.
