This from Middlesbrough's site today rings bells!

Boro Will Move Fast For Right-Back

GARETH SOUTHGATE today assured fans he plans to recruit a quality a replacement quickly if Luke Young completes his proposed move to Aston Villa.

Right-back Young is in the Midlands discussing terms after Boro accepted an offer the manager said was simply too good to refuse.

"We've had some enquiries from Villa over the last few days and they've come up with an offer which we think is acceptable to us," he said.

"Sometimes an offer can be one that makes it very difficult to turn down.

"Nothing has gone through yet so I don't want to talk too prematurely about anything but Luke's down there having talks and I would imagine undergoing a medical and we wait to see what happens from there.

"Until everything's sorted out I don't want to talk about Luke in the past tense as he's still our player at this moment in time time.

"But it's important that if he does move on, we're able to replace him very quickly."

Young, 29, was one of Boro's most consistent performers last season after joining the club in a 2.5m summer move from relegated Charlton Athletic.

The news has come somewhat out of the blue for Boro fans with the start of the season eight days away from the seasonal curtain raiser against Spurs but Southgate - pictured above on the day Young joined Boro - remains typically unflustered.

"I'm very relaxed about it," he said. "I know that come next Saturday we'll have a strong team and a strong squad.

"You learn very quickly as a manager that you have to deal with these events calmly and quickly.

"It would be easy for people to get jittery at this time and to panic. But I'm very pleased with where we're at.

"This is an unexpected event but you have to deal with those events during a season and how we react is the most important thing."

Hmmmm....I think Boro are in deep trouble personally....they look like a team that will struggle.  The quality of team needed for the Premier Leaguer has been lifting each season wheras Boro seem to get weaker ever season.  Question:  Who is going to score the goals ?  What if Tuncay becomes man marked?  Plan B??  Downing is a skilled player but not really a goalscorer.

Sorry but Boro are included with the promoted clubs as candidates for drop in my book.....

Alves was looking pretty handy near the end of last season, will be interesting to see if he can continue

Alves has been playing well in the pre-season games too...

I read somewhere that he bagged a double against an SPL side.

I think Lochy will get a deal... and Boro will survive... just.

Please be one of the usual top 3!!

Seriously though, Southgate has done ok as a new manager with limited resources. Midtable bet. Boro might not be fashionable but they seem to get the unexpected results when they need them.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I'd say your right, could well be a Derby last season but two teams this year.

Bolton are on the way down, with Stoke and WBA to join them. Hull will survive, Boro will finish top half and Alves will be among the league's top scorers, he's class. So say I.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

I actually suspect Boro will be fine this season. Despite limited resources they have recruited cleverly. Alves should score the goals, Tuncay is class, as is downing. Lochhead could be useful for them and Didier Digard is an up and coming young player who should easily replace Cattermole. Arca will provide the inventiveness in midfield and  in Huth, Wheater and Pogatetz they have a pretty solid set of CBs as well, better than most of the sides around them I'd say.

on that basis TJ , you have my vote for the position of "Sole Ruler of the Known Universe"

my effort in locating and pressing the shift key on six separate occasions is testament to the esteem in which you are held

Alves, Aliadiare and Tuncay..they still have some decent players. Alves will set the league alight this year.

Reading between the lines, what might this mean for our own Lochy?

Thats what we are waiting for isnt it..and by we I mean both camps as far as Im concerned

Defensively Boro have issues...most of the forum commnts are about the need to strenghthen (sp) midfield although the 2 latest signings will help.  Strikers are not a  problem..Alves, Mido Tuncay and Allaidere...another problem wil be where to fit Johnson in.

Mid table again I reckon...cant quite fathom the sale of RB to Villa though....even if it is good business.  Roll on Spurs at home.

Cmon Boro..

A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

On one hand I really really dont want Lochhead to go. On the other hand I want to see NZ players succeed - especially straight from the A-League. Guess i'll be happy with either outcome.

Lochy seems an almost certain signing to me.

Not so sure on the Lockhead signing......imagine the Boro fans reaction if they hear that the next signing to help their defensive woes is a kiwi from the aleague.....it would be the same reaction from the YF if Rickie signed up a defender from Warfies 3rd grade to replace Lia.

Surely Boro could find someone from the Championship or from Europe....

no offense to Warfies....its a great club

Yeah this would be good, although I have a little soft spot for Bolton as their stadium was very nice and shiny when I went there. But Megson I cannot stand Megson, I have to turn the sound down when watching them play on sky due to his Bactrain bawling he does at the touchline. If he gets them relagated then surely he'll never get another prem job again?

It seems football chairman have finally woken up as Monkey Heid and Souness can no longer get work thank god. McClaren only got his new job because his head is orange and the dutch board was stoned.
