Gourdie on Twitter says he noticed Ryan wasn't wearing the skippers armband in their game today and that Christopher Samba was and then goes on to say thatapparantly Nelsen is now the 'Off-field' captain while Samba is the 'On-field' skipper...

Seems strange...

Ryan talked about it when he was on the speaking tour with his book.  It's a call he's made with Allardyce because he felt there wasn't anything being done about grooming a leader for when he retires or moves on.

Last game of last season he wasn't captain either.  I had a huge sulk.

The concept of club captain is very well entrenched.  Many clubs have a club captain who is still the senior leader amongst the players but may not be a certain starter

For example Gary Neville is club captain at United and has done so since 2005.

The off field role is the more important

Very possible due to his wife and connections with the league, but if this happens, hopefully we can get him on loan for a Fred-type deal. He's expressed interest in playing for the Phoenix before so hopefully he'll pull on the stripey somehow.

I asked him about this before the world cup. Ryan said he had been wanted to hand over the captaincy to someone younger at the club for a while.
