Old Firm to play in EPL II?

New proposal tabled to split the EPL into 2 18 team divisions with Rangers and Celtic joining the lower of the 2 leagues.

http://au.fourfourtwo.com/news/101392,old-firm-backed-to-rival-premier-powerhouses.aspx

Interesting concept. Wonder if it will last any longer than any of the previous proposals for the Old Firm to play in England.

Like the bit about Celtic and Rangers having their 2nd teams in the Scottish leagues. Imagine in the future the Bhoys and Gers challenging for both the English and Scottish titles at the same time

Perhaps sharing the dosh around the SPL might work better than giving it all to the top two every year.

We dont need them. They're never gonna break into the top 4, they will be floating around the relegation spots.

Maybe the FA should just invite the best teams from Holland too.

Also one thing i've never understood about this, why do Celtic and Rangers think they have a god given right to play in the EPL? If they ever were to enter the English leagues they should start in the Conference where they belong.

Could say the same about the Phoenix/knights and even Cardiff and Swansea..

Phoenix/Knights were there from the beginning of the A-League plus there is no promotion/relegation so they didn't steal anyones spot.

Cardiff and Swansea have been in the English leagues since pre WW2 and started off in the lower leagues working their way up.

Celtic and Rangers think they deserve to start off immediately in the EPL, which is a joke.

Three for me, and two for them.

Much as I hate both sides of the Old Firm, that is a load of sh*te.

As for them joining any form of EPL, I doubt it will ever happen.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Yeah  i doubt it will happen. In joining they would earn over 50million a year which is about 40million more than they are getting now.. With that they would have the pulling power to sign decent players at the EPL standard.. Wolfben once again you speak out of your arse.

It would never happen as the rangers celtic matches draw alot of tv sales for the SPL internationaly. without the old firm, the spl would wither and die.

It already has, in fact the creation of the SPL was it's death warrent. The big two or is that, the only two, each and every year. Sad to say as some Scottish football is great to watch. I miss it not being shown on ESPN any more.

Wolfben, you've got to be kidding! That's just your prejudice talking. Success in the EPL is all about who has the most money. Rangers and Celtic are amongst the richest clubs in Europe even without the kind of TV money that an EPL team gets. Given the extra funds and they'd be in the title hunt in no time.

I can see how this is going to split though. The Prem would love it (the organisation, not the individual clubs) as it potentially gives them 2 more competitive teams that have a shot at breaking up the top 4. More competition = more interest = more money. The English FA might say yes for some of the same reasons. Rangers and Cletic are gagging for it and maybe even some of the Prem clubs would say yes. The bottom half clubs would at best be luke warm on the idea, even with an EPLII if not dead against it. The other Scottish clubs and the SFA will all be turning white at the thought.

In the end it won't happen.

Spot on, Malky.

According to Forbes.com, of the 25 richest clubs in the world Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Newcastle (!) were rated as 'richer' than Celtic in 2008, and Celtic rated higher than Everton, West Ham, Man City and Aston Villa

Just a thought, if one of them was to be relegated from prem two where would they go? to the championship or back to SPL.

How would it affect champions league entry, would their reserves play in it after winning SPL.

Championship I'd imagine. Else you'd get a situation where, say, Hibs win the SPL and possibly have a case for promotion to EPL2?
