question for non-prem fans

SiNZ made the following commnet in another topic and it sparked my interest

>>
PPS I was talking to a fellow non-Prem fan recently - a mate back home who is from Cardiff. He really hopes the club never gets into the top flight as it will ruin it for the fans - I could post the full comment. I bet we reach a point soon where some clubs decline promotion. <<

What do you reckon ?

Personally i'll drink deep from that 'poison chalice', i want city to go up!! If we come straight back down again, so be it. I want to be able to look people in the eye and say that after 104 years of trying we made it. I don't think we'll go broke (though we have been before and - just- lived to tell the tale!).

I was talking to a workmate (Soton fan) about it today, my analogy is : if I'd spent say two years (or 104 ) asking if a particular lass would go out with me and she finally said "yes", I'd go for it even if there was a chance that it would all end in tears.

If a club's never been in the top flight you've got to go and have a look really don't you?

It's a bit like going to a strip club in Soho. You're a bit pissed and your curiousity gets the better of you but by the end of the night you'll be broke and feeling a bit depressed.

As you say the worse case scenario is if your club management end up spending too much trying to stay up and you get into serious financial trouble. In my analogy this is where you also end up getting a kicking off the bouncers.

At the end of the day the Premier League sucks and is out to destroy everything in its path, Championship football, international football, anything that stands in the way of Premiership clubs and their owners maximising profits.

Read "The Beautiful Game? Searching for the Soul of Football" by David Conn for an insight into the negative impact the Premier League has had on English and World football.

What? Go down in the 2nd season?

Three for me, and two for them.

There is 2 ways to handle promotion - the Sunderland way and the Derby way.  Sunderland spent 20 million odd and stayed up although it is a massive risk as if the club go down they end up with a payroll they cannot afford (Bradford, Leeds).  Derby have been honest about the fact that they are coming up with no intention of staying there - they are just there for the windfall with the hope of building and developing the club.  This has worked well with clubs like Watford and Charlton who were able to come up, go down and then come up again with a stronger squad and financial platform.

On another note, I (and a large number of West Ham fans) actually preferred it more when we were in the Championship.  It was a bit of a throw-back to the old days, with sh*tty grounds such as Rotherham (Roeder's last game in charge, I think) where the team got changed at the hotel as the changing room was not up to their standard.  The whole thing was just a bit more..........gritty.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked

Also, it got rid of the plastic fans who changed to supporting Chelsea when we got relegated.

It will be a new team to play, and they play in a cool colour. Who cares if its only for one season. I dont agree that they will do a Reading as football is a funny old game. Who would of thought that a massive side like Leeds would of gone down. Wimbledon going from the Southern League to the Premiership. Hull are an established club with a great fan base, and should enjoy there season in there sun. I know when you here a manager saying that there happy to finish 4th from bottam, and sure some would say thats not that ambitous. But the ambition has been to play there, and to plan results that are winable. Sure theres no reason that Hull wouldnt go to Old Trafford and win, it happens to any given team on even game.

What they have to do is to be realistic, and spend wisely, to plan what games they have t be strong in. Sure the attrition rate is high for teams coming up. But it is there to be done. Sure there is a big gap between the very top of the premiereship and the championship. But is there really that much of a gap between the bottam of the EPL, and the best of the championship?

I dont think so, and this question brought around disscussions of Premier League 2, but again, I think thats a no go.

agree Deang with most of what you say,

however, re Leeds it seems that they had some very poor board level management

Frankie, i expect City are more likely to do a Derby than a Sunderland unless our chairman Duffen gets some equally rich associates on board but we might do a Birmingham (last day hell and who knows the outcome)

but if we can secure more funds i'd settle for fourth from bottom for the first two seasons up in there and build from that point

even though for me it's all about Hull city right now, I was also concerned at SiNZ mate's view that teams in general wouldn't want to go up

are there any fans out there who honestly don't want promotion???

There are certainly Ipswich fans who subscribe to that theory at times.  Better a winning season that doesn't bankrupt the club than seeing 3 or 4 wins and the side struggling for it's life... and we (for a season) were one of the great promotion successes.

How's my driving? - Whine here

DKP - your lot looked likely for parts of the season before this one,

now you've a new ground and from memory folks like Oprew and  willyB rate your club's management - I expect you'll bounce back into the CCC fairly quickly - after that it's anyone's guess

as UG says never say never - after all ttigers fans have been waiting for 104 years - gulp... please not another 104

DKP22 bad boy!! But so true!! ColU have no place in Premiership if we are honest; but we can enjoy Championship again I think.

I relate to the comments re real fans and burning off plastic fans. Most of the games I have watched live have been from the Championship down (apart from a couple of seasons watching Ipswich in old Div 1 pre Premier league). I actually like being able to walk around the town without fear, with smaller crowds, at prices which are in reach, seeing other real fans supporting their team... I like watching Prem football on TV but for real action...anything from Blue Square North/South upwards to Championship suits me. For me the Phoenix games are still like that too....its more like being at Bristol City or Plymouth Argyle than being at Chelski or ManU.

There are too many sides in the premiership, drop two sides, you then have a winter break and hopefully sides who come up are a little more prepared. The play offs are great for fans but sixth place in the championship to the top flight is a big jump.
