Sad indeed, just listened to bbc special 5 live with Robbie savage, some amazing stories from various fans ringing in. Almost teary eyed listening to it. What a guy.

I put these comments in the RIP thread....
I remember going to the Everton vs Leeds game on the opening day of the 1990-1991 season, after Leeds had just been promoted from Division 2. Gary Speed played for Leeds and was superb - amazing in the air, winning so many headers despite not being massively tall.
I was also sitting in a garden bar in Chester a couple of years ago and he jogged past. Still looked amazingly fit despite being retired for a couple of years.

This has hit me very hard i must say.

As some of you may know i have had my own battles with mental health, some of which have been documented on here. To see all the tributes flowing about what a true gentleman Speed was and how he was always a positive person with a loving family, to see how this has panned out is truly saddening.

My thoughts go out to his family, particularly his two boys who will grow up without a father. And i strongly urge anyone who feels they are in a dark place to talk to someone, the worst thing you can do is do nothing at all.

I don't know Buffon but completely agree with what he wrote.Three  years ago I was in a position where I nearly  ended up doing what Speed did. I asked for , and got , help . Didn't realise how bad things had got. Jr nearly ended up without a father.
So  , no shame in getting help , but just talking  to someone may be a great first step. A major tragedy for Gary and his family. By all accounts , he was a top bloke.

RIP, truly tragic.

TALK TALK TALK if you have any doubts at all about life.

I am pretty loathe to start talking about mental health issues as I have very little knowledge of the topic - usually that doesn't stop me, but with this is does as it is such a sensitve area.

The thing that I find very strange is that it appears that Speed had no history of these kinds of problems.  Even the people close to him seemed as surprised as they were saddened about what has happened, where you normally expect statements like "we knew he was having problems but we thought he was on top of them".  I guess anyone that goes to the extreme like Speed did was suffering in a very serious way, and just because those problems had not appeared earlier does not mean that they weren't there.  Also, I assume that just like any other disease, if you don't have it at a certain point in your life, it does not mean that you will never have it - just because Speed had no problems with depression for the first 41 years of his life, does not mean he was immune to it.

Not really knowing where I am going with this, but I find the whole thing confusing. Like millions of others, even though he never played for my club I f**king loved Gary Speed. I loved to watch him as a player, and recently could not have been happier and prouder of what he was doing with the Welsh national team.  If I can feel like I do about what has happened, I cannot imagine what the people who were really close to man a going through at the moment.

Six weeks ago a mate of mine met the same fate. He didn't show a single sign of having any problems and he was very close to his two sisters, his mrs of a year and his father. All four of those people in his life thought they could talk to Dion about anything and everything. Among all of his mates we came to the conclusion that he thought he could tackle his problems alone and that he didn't want his family or friends to be bothered by it. That was the type of guy he was, he thought he could do it alone. He would barely ever be seen without a smile on his face in public but it he did lose his mother three years ago to cancer and it is thought that he never really recovered from that. He just kept those feelings to himself and put on a brave face for his sisters. Right up until his last hours he was smiling and even socialising with several different friends. That is the scariest thing about his whole story, is that no one suspected a thing so it could really happen to anyone.

Some people say it is selfish to take your own life but really no one ever knows exactly how you have to feel before you can go through with something like that. It's so incredibly tragic for all involved and i would not wish it on anyone ever.

Fuck this stupid game

That's a very sad story TL. What i what i find most frightening and difficult to understand about it all is that it can seemingly happen to anyone at any time. Gary Speed had an amazing career, a job coaching his own country and a lovely family with a big circle of friends. From an outsider looking in it would appear he had it all but it just goes to show that it can happen to anyone.

Truly very sad
