SIDWELL AGREES CHELSEA MOVE Chelsea have confirmed that midfielder Steve Sidwell has agreed to join the club on a free transfer from July 1.

The 24-year-old midfielder parted company with Reading at the end of his contract after rejecting a new deal with the club.

Former champions Chelsea have been consistently linked with a move for the highly-rated midfielder throughout the season and he has now passed a medical at Stamford Bridge.

He is Jose Mourinho's first signing of the summer and will be a valuable addition to the squad.

The Portuguese coach is now hoping to add a striker and a defender to the ranks

i really dont think this is the best move for Steve. atleast the money will be good.

also, i think this could be Jose covering his ass as he probably doesnt think Lamps will be sticking around

<!-- E IIMA --><!-- S SF -->Reading midfielder Steve Sidwell has agreed to join Chelsea on a free transfer after his Royals contract expires on 1 July.

As well as Chelsea, the 24-year-old Sidwell had also been linked with moves to Manchester United or Newcastle.

Sidwell will be Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho's first signing of the summer.

Sidwell, who reportedly rejected an offer of a new four-year deal worth 25,000 a week, has been a key player for the Royals this season. <!-- E SF -->

Reading manager Steve Coppell first signed Sidwell on loan when he was in charge of Brentford in 2001 and signed him on a permanent basis at Reading two years later.

Last season Sidwell scored four times in 35 Premiership matches.

Chelsea said Sidwell had passed a medical but gave no details about the length of his contract.

ive got a song that wont take long, Adelaide are rubbish.. the second verse is same as the first.. ADELAIDE ARE RUBBISH

Stupid Sidwell.  Bye bye any chance of international career.  Get that bum ready for benchwarming boy!

Must be greed cos he had an excellent manager in Coppell, a near guaranteed first team place and a team where the players had egos under control.

I don't understand this move at all. Sidwell has (had) a helluva future I think - he should have made the England squad this year - and to willingly disappear into a Wright-Phillips-like vortex is career suicide.
Surely, if really was hell-bent on leaving Reading, then Newcastle (another rumoured destination) would have been better for his career. Things just might start happening there under new management and he'd get far more action on the pitch, that's for sure.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

Makelele is also on the way out - I don't think it's the brightest move on Sidwell's part but hey we all would if we could...

Sids saw the money, and i can't blame him. the money at Reading would have been good but a contract at Chelsea? that'd last most people for a whle if god forbid something was to end his career early.

i still think its part of the club covering the ass incase Lampard leaves. West Ham anyone?
