A leading official has claimed that the linesman who gave a goal instead of a corner for Reading in the Championship clash at Watford "will regret'' his mistake.

Linesman Nigel Bannister farcically flagged for a goal after the ball crossed the goalline wide of the goal following a challenge between John Eustace and Royals striker Noel Hunt.

Despite not a single Reading player appealing for the 'goal', 25-year-old referee Stuart Attwell gave Steve Coppell's men a 1-0 lead.

Watford eventually rallied to claim a 2-2 draw at Vicarage Road but assistant referee's manager for Professional Game Match Officials, Paul Rejer, admits that Bannister will be given some "operational advice''.

For some reason I didn't quite get to the controversial decision, no matter how much I tried.

Is that what Tops off for the YF is all about?

I note with interest HN hasn't locked down this one! HarryHotspur2008-09-23 22:47:17

The football weekly podcast this week led me to this goal that wasn't.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKuLtLXl7FI&NR=1 It occurs at 1min 15sec.
I also remember the Clive Allen goal that wasn't.  Any others?

I actually agree with the no replay...

If you allowed a replay on a bad decision on a goal..then it sets a precedent for it to happen in the future. Say a player was offside when a goal was scored etc etc

Allegedly

Totally agree.

It would open a whole can of worms.

For example anyone who saw Liverpools disallowed goal against Stoke would struggle to explain why it was ruled out so let's have a replay - I don't think so.

And of course if it was replayed...Reading would have won!

Clearly I am the only person who got the full frontals when I went to the link at top. I expected 20 00000000 hits by now.

Why is my computer better than yours? What have I desrved to get this? Thank God I didn't open the link at work

Bad example - Torres was offside at the moment the ball was struck, clearly visible if you pause the action, and ran across the keeper's line of vision as the ball arrived - but I agree with what you're saying.

Having said that, there is already a precedent. In the 2006 World Cup Qualifers, the first leg of the 5th place Asian playoff between Uzbekistand and Bahrain was replayed due to an officiating error.

Another example.
Bayern Munich v Nuremberg, Bundesliga 1994
Bayern Munich are awarded a goal despite Thomas Helmer's shot trickling wide. Nuremberg lose 2-1, but appeal. In the replayed game Bayern win 5-0.
