Yeah he is available - was on the bench vs Chelsea. It's good that we got away with neither Ox or Gibbs having a suspension. What a weird situation.
Regarding this whole Wenger business, sorry to bring it back to this brumbys, but I think it's interesting to consider what he would do, rather than what we think he should do / want him to do. And for me there's a few scenarios he is probably considering.
- We come 3rd / 4th and win the FA cup. That's a good season for me. Is it for him? Probably not, but can you retire on the back of that and be happy where you left the team? I'd say so.
- He obviously knows much more regarding finances, and he's looking forward to having some money to spend over the next few years, having had to live like a pauper in the transfer markets up until recently, he might be excited by the prospect of bringing in some classy players to compliment the squad.
- We finish top 4, no FA cup win. What does he do here? I'd say it's likely he stubbornly sticks it out. He won't be forced out, I think we all know that. He won't want to leave on the back of such a dissapointing season.
- He can see several players in the squad aging, and he wants to leave behind a team that doesn't need an overhaul to the next manager, so sticks out another couple of years, while bringing in youthful, top talent, and can leave behind a cohesive team for the next manager. To consider this - players in the 30ish / 30+ bracket: Sagna, 31 - Mertesacker, 29 - Rosicky, 33 - Arteta, 31 - Cazorla, 29 - Flamini, 30. And then there's Vermaelen, Koscielny, Podolski and Monreal who are 28.
We all know that this is a fine age for a defender, but there are some legs out there getting on a bit and will need replacing in the next few years. I think Wenger could see that as a project for before he steps aside.
