Irishman a threat to NZ premier league coverage By ROY PILOTT - Waikato Times | Saturday, 17 January 2009

The appalling possibility of having Irishman Tommy Smyth polluting our premier league coverage from Sky has raised its head.

ESPN is in the running for the packages to be auctioned off for squillions of pounds by the Premier League. It was announced in the US this week that ESPN would bid for one of the packages at least.

That may mean the Disney-owned company will use its Mickey Mouse commentator Smyth, probably the most disliked comments man in world football.

Hopefully the issue will not come down to Sky being able to get the infected English football coverage via the US on the cheap. We have been fortunate with the number of matches Sky are giving us this season, but I have to say the quality of satellite pictures are dreadful

This cannot be allowed to happen

Oh f**k no... just f**k no.

And ESPN images will never get better because they use "PAL formatting" or something and the rest of the world use something else.

Hopefully Sky (the english sky) will land them.Michael2009-01-17 18:28:16

ESPN have an amazing knack of making an HD quality picture look fuzzy and 20 years old. Their coverage of South Amercian football is testiment to that when they were showing it. It resembled something similar to BBW first attempted you tube video - and they're meant to be professionals BBW isn't. Lonegunmen2009-01-17 19:42:26

Sky and Soultana (Setanta) will be odds on to win those contracts here in the UK (and thus in EnZed???). It would be surprising if ESPN got anything.

Dunno why NZ gets ESPN for CL - Sky and ITV have all of those fixtures here in the UK.

How old is Leggy?  Is he 12 or 72?

no the rights to the Premiership are sold in different packages. Sky UK and Setanta have the UK rights, while the foreign rights are sold differently as well (can't remember who has the rights currently...) which is why we dont get the same commentry etc

For Champions League ESPN has the international contract from UEFA for this area

I would imagine ESPN uses NTSC rather than PAL (PAL is the standard the world with the exception of N America and Japan uses) - it's a SD picture with a lower resolution than PAL.

I remember when ESPN had the SPL rights - and Tommy Smyth commentating waspainful, you could be watching Hibs v Dundee Utd and he would talk about Celtic and how great they are for 90mins.

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

Check out the big brain on Ginge.....

But a clear and true precise explanation as to why US footage and ESPN appears sh*te.....

The term PAL is often used informally to refer to a 625-line/50 Hz (576i, principally European, African and Asian) television system, and to differentiate from a 525-line/60 Hz (480i, principally American and Japanese) NTSC system.

I may have noted this before. In 1996 there was a concerted campaign by fans in the USA to get ESPN to drop S****.  ESPN were inundated with complaint. They, ESPN, chose to do nothing.
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

Was that not the UK rights only Uber?  International rights still to be sold I thought?

And what that actually means, the Pal systems have 576 'interlaced' lines of pixels, that refresh in a sort of odds and then evens system(ie only one of each two each loop), this means we have a higher clarity because we have more pixels, but a less 'smooth' image because it only refreshes 50 times a second in comparison with the NTSCs 60

and all this without looking at wikipedia, turns out my teachers boring monologue about resolutions did come in handy!

You are right Smithy - the foreign rights are auctioned off next year. With ESPN having failed for the UK broadcast rights, they could possibly have room for a bigger bid for those...

NTSC is rubbish by comparison with PAL.
