I've just been checking out the situation across the Tasman for football coverage this season.

Football fans used to be better off over there with Foxtel carrying EPL, A-League, la Liga, Serie A, Champions League, internationals etc. for one reasonable price on their own sports channels.

When beIN came along over there you could just add that to your Foxtel subscription for lots more football.

We are now much better off than Aussie football followers for whom it's suddenly got much more expensive to watch football legally.

There are definitely advantages in cost and convenience in getting all your sport from one satellite provider such as here with Sky.

The online-only option is available in Australia through beIN Sport Connect for $A18 / month - problem is, it doesn't have the Premier League over there of course.

Across the ditch, to watch the EPL you need to subscribe to Optus. For all other football you need to subscribe to Foxtel and/or beIN Sport.

And I notice that across the ditch Foxtel charge new customers $175 for installation and equipment (Sky gave up on charging new customers for installation long ago).

To subscribe to both Optus and Foxtel (with added beIN) would be $A 1437 per annum !!!!

And with the hassle of having to have a mobile plan with Optus to get live EPL games.

COST IN AUSSIE:

Optus for EPL: $540 / year (including your mobile phone cost); $420 / year with "Fetch TV" box to stream onto your TV

http://www.optus.com.au/epl?SID=con:tv:EPLPRE:EPLP...

You must be an Optus customer for phone and/or broadband to get the EPL coverage.

Minimum cost for mobile phone and EPL = $540 / year (cheapest eligible plan plus $15 / month for EPL)

(Current special offer this month only = free EPL with $360 / year mobile phone plan)

Foxtel for A-League, Socceroos, beIN Sports channels etc. = $787 / year for Foxtel basic package plus Sport (not including beIN)

Foxtel with Sport including beIN Sport (3 channels) = $907 / year (Both these prices include installation and equipment hire)

http://getbein.beinsports.com/au/subscribe/

https://www.foxtel.com.au/get.html

Foxtel's own sports channels are now very similar to what Sky TV was providing in NZ last season. They only broadcast six EPL club channels for delayed EPL coverage, A-League, Barcelona TV (one Barcelona match a week) and the minimal football available on ESPN such as FA Cup and MLS.

And even if you add the beIN Sports channels (they provide three in Oz) there is no EPL over there - just la Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Champions League etc.

So anyone in Australia wanting to watch the EPL plus A-League, European football, Socceroos etc. legally would have to subscribe to both Optus and Foxtel.

Cost for both would be $530 for Optus plus $907 for Foxtel with beIN Sport

TOTAL COST: $A 1437 per year !!!!!

I'm not so sure, if they do have programming control why wait until 5 o'clock tonight to show the burnley v Swansea game? Why wouldn't they put it on at 12 or 3 when they are showing the two games from the pop up channels?? - i'm not sure this proves they do or don't have control - surely either way this question about why the game is delayed by so much is relevant?

On bein 1 I haven't seen any bein content, and when there is ads they just have promos for upcoming games or flashbacks which is all content from premier league productions - I have seen heaps during the week, match day seems to mostly be direct from the premier league

Yeah that doesn't make sense for 2 reasons. 1 - everyone has smartphones these days. If you want to follow the score in a concurrent game you can. 2- by spoiling other games they make it less likely that viewers will watch them delayed later. So they're putting people off their own product

I really like that. I like to know what's happening in the other games without having to constantly check social media for updates.

Would be good to have the option to turn that off for those like yourself who plan to watch other games afterwards,  and still have that 'live viewing' experience

OK so I'm out of town and want to watch the Arse smoke the Scouse tonight. Can I watch via the sky go app? The bein channels don't seem to be there at present (I have already added them to my account)?

pretty sure beIN isn't on SKY GO - however until the beIN connect thing is sorted I think they have some of the game on Sports pop-ups on SKY GO - i think i read that somewhere.

Seems like a minor convenience to some to not have to check their phone for a score vs a massive inconvenience to others to have entire games spoiled for them all season.

I don't really understand why they do it. It used to make sense when live updates of scores were hard to come by and TV would generally only show one game at a time anyway. These days it makes no sense, as CT said.

Plus as a personal preference if I'm watching a game, I want to watch that game. I don't want to be constantly taken to other games to see highlights. The FFA cup coverage annoyed me for that reason, and it seems like the EPL will do the same for the next 3 years.

From what I have gathered the goal rush portion is a new feature this year for the premier league tv channel, the feed has separate commentators and it is up to the rights holder to choose which feed they take (either with goal rush or without)

Not sure where you get your facts/prices from.

We get 15 sports channels, 3 of which are beIN sports and 2 ESPN. There are also 3 club TV-- Man Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea which show everything from games 30 years ago to now and interviews which are live etc. SBS (free to air)  have a live game every week.

Optus is the only way to get live EPL coverage and they are losing big time as they thought that everyone would change to them.

Of all the people I have asked about their reaction to the above, ( about 25) none have gone to Optus and 2 cancelled their Foxtel.

On the price, I get all the channels except the 9 movie ones and I pay $768 per year including the TV guide, which is fixed until June next year.

Mid-game score checks are horrid. Why would anybody actually want this? If you want to check the score in the other game then change channel.

Correct. However, two appeared to be available only through SkyGo.

This turned out to be a saviour for me last night as I could see Burnley v Swansea live on SkyGo (which remarkably worked almost all the time) rather than wait until 5pm when telecast through the skybox(not that it was a totally enjoyable experience, but that's another story).

I think all the pop-ups in use for the Olympics may have prevented the extra Beins from being broadcast (or maybe I should I have re-initialised my skybox?).  Hopefully they will all be broadcast in the future (Burnley will not often be the 'feature' ,match, and my broadband speed means an appreciable quality difference between interweb v satellite).

Overall, not a bad effort in terms of coverage.

Dunno, if you find one of the other games has lots of goals you might swtich to it or watch the replay later.

Very interesting. I thought there were only going to be 3 pop-ups (with the 3rd one in hd on after the Olympics) and that none would be on skygo.

You may be out of luck. On closer examination, it appears only those channels not playing through the skybox are on skyGo (this based on my trial and error attempt right now - and they are only showing effective "premier league is coming" test patterns, but with nothing scheduled). Doesn't seem right, but that appears the way it is set up right now.

Might have to revise my earlier 'good effort' verdict.

That would be cool. But sounds like it's in the feed itself. So they'd need to run them on different channels which doesn't seem worth it.

You'd think the default would be not to ruin games for others, for the reasons CT said and because it's a minor convenience to someone and a major inconvenience for others.

But maybe that's just me.

Despite the game, positive experience as it recorded fine (unlike for my parents yesterday). Was interested in what analysis they'd have then saw it was Ferdinand and Schmeichel in a studio at half time which seemed a bit odd for an Arsenal-Liverpool game. Didn't bother to stop it  fast forwarding to listen to them.

Still hanging out for the Bein Connect option but looks like the majority happy with what they got on the sky channels..

looks like the Germans have got a PLP type service: http://www.dazn.com/ with the other top leagues thrown in as well..

First month free as well, might be worth a look if you have a VPN/DNS service..

Might need to understand german however..

Aside from the actual technical side of things, the pre and post game coverage is great. Hard to say as an LFC fan but really enjoyed the insightful, honest punditry of Rio Ferdinand and Peter Schmeichel. Who are the pundits we all like and dislike? Carra (good) Nev (Good) Owen (Awful) etc.

Bein NZ was suggesting on twitter earlier that they still don't have an ETA for bein connect.

I'm happy to pay, but am tiding over with fullmatchesandshows and gettyfooty (best for MOTD on-demand, since iplayer still seemingly has a 24 hour block if watching it live does not suit.)
