Wes Brown - explain please...

Can someone - anyone - unravel the mystery that is Wes Brown for me?

Every time he plays (and tonight on the highlights was another example) he looks completely average and is regularly beaten by opposing strikers with ease and/or or gives the ball away cheaply when in possession.

But then I read he's played more games for United this season than anyone else, he seems to always be in the England squad and he's just signed a new four-year deal worth 55 thousand pounds a week.

I just think he's not very good.  And I'm not just saying it because he's Man U - I'd think the same if he was a Liverpool player.

United fans - explain please?

I'm not a Utd fan and I agree with you.  But so long as Utd keep playing him and get clean sheets I'll keep him in my fantasy football team

Dunno, LG. From what I've seen of James over the last few seasons, he's the best English keeper in the EPL.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

That says a lot doesn't it! Excuse my cynicism. England used to be the breading ground for the best goalkeepers around except for Bert Tautman of course.

I don't rate him either.

But he's at least 13 times better than Gary Neville.

The presence of Wes Brown at the top level has always perplexed me, in fact I brought it up in my column in (the former) Soccer Talk. Totally bewilderiing. Gary Neville is a better player, which really says it all.

i wonder how he ever got a look in for a side like united. surely there are many better players out there for lesser teams perplexed as to why he had such luck getting picked.

Sir Alex once said Wes Brown was potentially the best defender he had worked with!!! Over the likes of big P McGrath, then Brown suffered a terrible injury and never came back as strongly! End of the day he's had to help Vidic carry Ferdinand all season, and personally I would love him at Spurs...

I cant believe Carragher makes England squads!

Admittedly that man says a lot of rubbish.

Yet again....on the highlights last night, the ball comes across, Brown mistimes his header which goes backwards off his nut and to Dean Ashton who provides the (admittedly brilliant and unlikely) finish.

Regardless, Brown again exposed.  Honestly, this guy is completely average.  What's the bet he costs Man U the CL final?

yes i agree and so does every person i know who watches football he is not good enough> Get beaten 99% of the time. But then again against BArca people were saying he was man of the match and he did play very well.

No, macca was one of the best in the world when used in the correct position. Watch the highlights of the chappel hadlee, as good a series as a NZer has produced against australia.

On Wes Brown, good managers pick him, Fergie and Capello aren't mugs. Maybe we just don't see it.

Thats one series, you are joking if you dont think he was given a lot more chances than most other players get.As for best in the world thats really stretching it,yep he looked good when he was on form but unfortunately that did not happen anywhere enough to justify his constant selection.

Wes Brown is a bucket of crap. he won't cost united the CL, he'll prob score the winner.

he seems to have flashes of 'brilliance' which carry him through to england national team/mancs starting spot. i dont think ive ever read an article/heard commentary bad mouthing him.

look, from the way i see it, not even talking from a fans point of view here.

wes has played practically every game in the defence of the team with the best defensive record in the premiership. that speaks for something, and u can''t just say he was carried. whatever his personal play does, he's still part of that

Wes Brown is a very good defender. I've seen enough of him over the years to realise he's no mug, I think the fact that he stays under the radar is one of the reasons he's had such a successful career. You dont make the United and England teams by being average and he's got a trophy wall big enough to rival any player from Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea!

So trophies are the indicator of how good a player you are?  Based on that, Alan Shearer must have been absolute sh*t!

"Under the radar"?  I'm sorry but that's just crap.  And so is Brown - even Man U's fans admit it.

That's just churlish. In the late 90s and early 00s, Macca was one of our best batsman but then everyone started messing with his head and his talent was basically wasted.

As far as Brown goes, I don't really care enough about United or the Premiership to have watched him play a lot, but someone who knows a lot more about football than me said that Brown had amazing recovery speed and was the best 'last-ditch tackle' defender in the Premiership. So maybe his other deficiencies mentioned in this thread are offset by those attributes.

lol what is brown not doing exaclty? united have the best defensive record easily this season. and brown as been part of that defence the whole time, i think this speaks quite highly in itself, and u cna't say he was covered by vidic or rio the whole seaon

Talking of average players who shouldn't play for the teams they do, what about that muppet Steven Gerald or Gerrard or Garold or whatever his name is. Average.
