When the English failed to qualify for EURO 2008, many of the English players, media and the football establishment claimed that the tournament would be all the poorer for England's absence from it.
Now that the group stage has been completed and all the quarter-final line-ups are known, what do Feverites think about such claims?
I'm asking the question from a purely football perspective, obviously for the English guys here the tournament would have elicited more interest if England were there, but that's not the point of this poll.

No prizes for guessing my feelings about this....

Quality of game has prossibly been raised due to England not being involved! Heaps of attacking play from all teams excepty from maybe the Greeks, some quality goals......can't imagine having the England team involved would have made this tourney any better.

Nope. Wouldn't have been better at all. This is the kind of guff usually trotted out by the English media when they fail to qualify for a major tournament.

...and sadly, although I would've loved it, I don't think it would have been any better if Scotland had been there either (apart from giving me the agony of watching them being kicked out after the 1st round, again)

Probably not. I would support them if they were there but i dunno if that would of made it any better, i mean it's been a great tournament so far without them and i can't see that changing as we head into the knockouts.

I found it quite ironic that all the teams have a badge on their left sleeve which says Respect, obviously a UEFA initiative, since none of the teams in the finals are English speaking.

Then again, maybe all the teams re just big Ali G fans

You sure you aren't an ITV or BBC pundit in disguise.

Claims like this are one of the big reasons for so many bricks through tellys in Scotland when watching these tournaments -sans Poms

It might be best if England never play a major tournament again...

England are the all blacks of football

Originator back in the dark ages of the sport, gain unearned reputation for quality, one one major tournament once, and nothing since

Better for both sets of fans if they just stayed at home during World Cups...

The patches are part of UEFA's No to Racism campaign. It's meant to be a universal message, that's why it's in English.

I would also guess that a great majority of the players at the tournament speaks English, I know that pretty much all the Croats do. I wonder though if English players speak any other language other than English... el grapadura2008-06-19 17:16:14

As much as I would have loved to see England play at Euro 2008, the English fans would ruin this tournament by doing something stupid had we qualified. Feverish mentioned it on his blog, the harmony between supporters over there would not be possible if Her Majesty's Finest were present.

Would England have beaten the Swedes so convincingly? No I don't think so either - case closed they didn't deserve to be there.

yes, for me the tournament would be vastly more interesting if England were there

it has been a good tournament - and England in Russia's place would have been unlikely to have reduced its quality

but it would be good to be emotionally involved, as opposed to frequently having a nuetral position when watching

i voted Yes, it would've been better, purely as the media would show more and because the bulk of NZs footballing diet is EPL

must say the coverage hasnt been too bad though...

He also mentioned Scotland in passing in the point he was making about England, completely unnecessarily IMHO.

Would've the tournament been better with the Scotland fans, and would they have Scotland done worse than France - who knows (remember Scotland were piped to qualification by France & Italy)

Scotland fans in Europe are completely different from the English, I'm not sure  what point Greeney was trying to make by making the point that the atmosphere is better without the England and Scotland fans, but I think he's wrong

when was the last time there was trouble at an England game?  Marseille???  If so, I  was there at that time, and in many situations (many, not all) the english were screwed again by the press.  There were attacked and by the tunisians, but it was never reported like that.  Remember, this is the same world cup where the german fans but a policeman in a coma.

English fans bring noise, passion and colour, much like the scots, oirish and ..........well the welsh have not been since 1958, and would probably f**k it up if they managed to qualify to anything.  Any competition is worse off for not having them there.

As for the playing side of things, they are a better side than many that did qualify (Austia, Swiss, etc) so you could say they deserve to be there ahead of them.  Unfortunately they are not better than the 2 teams who were in their qualifying group.

I still think the competition is worse for not having them there (and I would have gone over if they were - as it is, it is difficult to convince the wife to fund her unemployed husband to go and watch Switzerland play).

yeah Scots are different - and it would be good to have them. I hung out with a few and we talked about how different it would be if Eng were here, and how good spirited the fans are here. The fact that no Eng have come, except to scalp tickets, shows that they are not so much football supporters but Eng supporters. I was in France 98 and though it was good to hang out with all the poms - I am finding it quite cool here without the attitude of a lot of them.

Personally I think this 'argument' is somewhat a mute point as surely it depends on your allegiance. As an England supporter Im gutted they're not there and took a while to get interested in Euro 08, but at the same time I can understand why others could not care less. Was I distraught when France did not qualify for the 1990 or 1994 World Cups or Holland in 2002, not at all.
Every team is level at the start of the qualifiers...if you don't do the job and qualify, tough.

...cmon England 2010 : )
