Getting rid of TVNZ+

In the spirit of the similarly named thread about Sky.

Should I have been surprised to see that despite paying $44.95 that when I to go view the highlights of the opening match I have to sit through two ads, and even worse the first one is TVNZ promoting the $44.95 pass that I have already paid for, second was Lotto

I would have quite happily paid double for there to be an option with no ads.  104 matches, 104 highlights to watch, will it be 104 sets of ads to sit through ...

I was bloody annoyed they went to an ad the minute the national anthem had played. I thought that was bad taste this morning.
Seen some users have problems logging in as well, which I expected. I logged in early to make sure I had no trouble by kick off

The hydration break also seems suspiciously like an ad break.
And...the YouTube highlights on TVNZSport have an ad, within the video itself...

I'm old enough to remember when....never mind...🫣

To be completely honest here, having ad's inserted has never really bothered me, as I usually just tune out and do something else or mute them and play with my phone.

Probably helps that I work with loud machinery all day - No I don't have hearing loss either! - So I tend to block out unnecessary or unwanted sounds until I hear what I want to hear if that makes sense.

What will really piss me off though is if they cut to commercials and then come back and the game has resumed - as has already been reported as happening in other broadcasts around the world.

I will be keeping receipts TVNZ, so you'd better not go and fuck it up...

Seems we may get American coverage and commentary, when the games are the ones TVNZ isn't also putting on free to air.

The other commentator of the pair in Guadalajara sounded more knowledgeable and less North American.

Mexico 2 - 0 South Africa

Before the game I expected this defeat (I said 2-0, 3-0 or 3-1) and actually I expect them to be defeated in the next 2 games also. So left me just explain why I believe this is the case and the very poor showing (they chocked!) in this morning game.

Reason 1:
Bafana has had one of the worst World Cup preparations among the 48 qualified teams. Bafana played Panama twice. Yes that's right a 2 for 1 deal. Now selecting Panama, ranked 34, is not a bad team to prepare for Mexico, but to play them twice is a joke. They then played Nicaragua (131st), who came to Johannesburg and parked the bus very successfully. For their final preparation game, the coach Hugo Broos asked for a European team to play. Now this is important because Bafana has Czechia in their group and they haven't played a European team since........Andorra in March 2024. Against a quickly assembled Bafana C team. So who did they play? Jamaica. Piss take.

And you might be wondering, when was the last time Bafana played an Asian team, as they have South Korea in their group? "Forget about it!" So where has all that FIFA money gone? "Forget about it!"

Reason 2:
After a poor showing at the AFCON (getting knocked out in the round of 16 against Cameroon), Bafana coach Hugo Broos said one of the main reasons is Bafana players don't play in Europe. Great! I agree. So is he going to select a host of South Africans that are playing in Europe? No he is not.
How about a Portsmouth fc player? "No!". How about 2 players playing and doing well in the Austrian top division?. "No!". How about a player in Portugal's top division? "No!" How about a player that has been selected in the "Danish Superliga team of the year" x 2 (two years in a row). "No!, He is not good enough." Teeth puller

Reason 3:
South Africa is very much like Turkish football. Big countries with good leagues, resources who continually underperform on the international stage. Most owners in the PSL are only concerned about winning within the league and finding the players to keep them up (top division). The frequency of European teams being turned away from signing players is a joke. Rejecting good offers in order to keep their talent has damaged the national team.

https://www.soccerladuma.co.za/news/local/vuyo-letlapa-attracts-interest-from-five-european-clubs-after-standout-displays-for-sekhukhune-unite

One of the worst offenders is Caf Champions league winner Mamelodi Sundowns. All of the Mamelodi Sundowns players in the Bafana team (think 8 players) have received offers from Europe (over the years) and all have been rejected. Even worse they actively try to recruit back European based South African players into their team. Big fish swimming in a very small pond. The latest is Antonio van Wyk (23) who had an excellent season in the Austrian Bundesliga. Signing fee to SV Reid is somewhere between Euro 1 million and Euro 1.5 million. Super wasteful because Mamelodi Sundowns have excellent young players that can easily player in that position. But we must have a "marquee signing" because we lost the league to Orlando Pirates. SV Reid, who are losing about half their team (loans and purchases) are now looking to another South African to fill their team for next season....

Despite the ads ("hydration break" being an excuse for America to put commercials during the games) it at least worked well today. Remains to be seen what will happen at a more popular time like a during the day in the weekend or an NZ (or more popular team than today) match when more people are trying to watch live. Shame about the American commentator for the second game though.

I actually thought the ad breaks completely stopped the momentum of the first game today (only saw the first).

Agree ads during the game are horrible - was more meaning the app at least worked and didn't buffer or crash.

The adverts - yeah I get it. They want to keep some costs down and make a bit back. They annoy me immensely though and I specifically read before I bought there would ONLY be adverts before the game, and at half time - not the hydration breaks and some others. That's a bit untidy. I just mute them.

It's the commentators that are really getting under my skin. The beige FIFA commentators who spend the majority of the time talking AROUND the game (history of, ramifications, what has happened in other games I haven't seen yet) rather than actually describing what is happening in the game in front of them. I remember FIFA.com used to have a mute function for the commentators - not for TVNZ+.

I have muted most of this USA Paraguay match. I would have liked to have heard the game sounds though.

I also hate ads in the hydration breaks.  Also they had a break straight after the anthem. Not sure if it was just for the Mexico South Africa game but it was unnecessary.   I like to see the players shake hands before and after the game.

The ad break after anthems get me too, they have done it for every game. Usually the commentators are talking and they cut for the ad. So dumb!

The ads are an annoyance but Sky has started putting picture in picture ads through everything... normally big red McDonald's bars while shrinking the picture. So still an upgrade as far as I'm concerned. App is working well too.

Agree on the immediate cut to ad breaks after anthems. Unnecessary.

I watched the 9 min higlight package of this, it was a tough watch, the American commentator was horrendous, he was coupled with an Irishman on comments too.
The crowd sound was set to 1 and the commentary to 10, at times it sounded completely silent. And they spent 30 secs showing Infantini on the crowd, and showed the winning Korean goal once in real time with no replays.

I get the frustration about ads, really, but I’m surprised at the amount of people in this thread who didn’t expect the Shady Moneymaking Tournament run by the Shady Moneymaking Organisation in the Shady Moneymaking Country to involve quite so much Shady Moneymaking.

Not TVNZ's fault but the ad breaks (these are not "hydration" breaks) are definitely getting frustrating. The Americans have managed to turn the game into essentially quarters instead of halves so they can fit more commercials in. Surprised they haven't pushed for time outs too so we can have ads every few minutes and a 90 minute game takes all day with more ads than game like the American sports.

TVNZ, unlike the BBC, have chosen to shown adverts during the breaks. There's not some noble stance by TVNZ that differentiates them from the American broadcasters and many of the rest of the world's broadcaster.

The fault is squarely on FIFA.

Instead of nitpicking, how about let's be happy that this is a return to New Zealand sport being broadcast for free. If they need to have Ads during the breaks (of which they have not created) to make this viable for the network in little old New Zealand, then fair enough! I personally have been very happy with how easy it was to sign up, navigate and watch.

I am already much more impressed with the value of this event subscription that my Sky Sports package! And if me buying it, is helping the wider population of New Zealand to witness the beautiful game, how good.

I didn't realise BBC weren't as I'm seeing lot's of UK based acquaintances complaining about the ads too - are they happening on ITV (as coverage is split between both BBC and ITV)? BBC never have ads as they are funded by the TV licence fee so the model is a bit different to most FTA channels.

My understanding was that BBC weren't. And ITV had chosen not to as well (source) but things might have changed.

I didn't mean to crap on TVNZ as they're well above Sky in favourability for me. But just flagging that the many, but not all, of the world's broadcasters have happily adopted the ad break. It's on FIFA for opening the doorway to it.

One thing I will give TVNZ credit for is their highlights options. Each game has three different highlights you can watch that vary in length.

Could be good if you are on the go and want to basically just see the goals or alternatively sit down with a cuppa and watch what is basically a mini match.

Three for me, and two for them.

I've seen quite a few complaints above the image quality on SBS online from a few disgruntled Aussies.
I have an IPTV sub and are watching in 4K, a few broadcasters around the world are offering it
