For all the talk of Paraguay having one of the best defences in South America, they haven't looked very good so far.

Only 22 degrees Celsius so a nice temp to play in and press hard.
Americans very impressive first half.

So that's first implementation of the new expanded VAR laws.

Expanded VAR Review: VAR can now review clear, incorrectly awarded corner kicks (if changeable immediately), incorrect red cards resulting from clearly wrong second yellow cards, and attacking team offenses before free kicks or corners that directly influence a goal, penalty, or disciplinary outcome.

Why is the ref taking out both cards if he's only going to show a yellow?

He has them together in a folder pouch, back to back. So he pulls out both, then awards the one he is giving for the foul.

There are no rules around how referees have to use their cards. I like my yellow in front pocket and red in the back of my shorts, but I know referees that do similar to this one

It stresses me out thinking he's going to show someone an unnecessary red card, lol.

Emphatic 4-1 win for the very impressive Americanos.
Though they will be worried about Pulisic going off at HT.

US verus Socceroos will be tasty game to watch.

Presumably down the road in San Diego the AWs squad were watching that game. Likely a similar feel in that big stadium on Tuesday, the crowd 95% behind one team.

Hopefully we do better than the Paraguyans in taking the 'Tehrangeles' crowd out of the match in the first half.

How many passes did the USA make leading up to their fourth goal? Anyone?
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's living in Agadez, Niger.  Spending more time in town, Agadez, as bad people in the desert are spoiling the good life.
19/4/26.

My understanding of the overturned dive today was that it's was only possible because the yellow card was given. Which means they can call it "mistaken identity" and overturn it. Really good to see. No doubt the Premier League will fuck it up.

The USA looked really classy. Good decision making all round the park. Completely unselfish attacking. Good game to watch.

US player Folarin Balogun who scored two goals today, became a US citizen by accident when the airline refused to fly his mom back to England while she was pregnant with him.

Balogun was still in his mother Florence’s tummy when, seven months pregnant, she visited New York on holiday in 2001. Only the return journey never happened as planned because the airline would not let her fly due to the size of her belly which, in her own words, was “massive”.

>So Florian ended up being born in Brooklyn, not London, and spent the first couple of months of his life there in Florence’s sister-in-law’s two-bedroom apartment before mother and baby were considered well enough to fly home.

22nd v 27th, could be very entertaining.
Aussie will be adventurous and attacking, will the Turks be able to counter it? Good for the game if they think they can!

Reckon the Aussies will be up for it this WC.

Huge bank of goal behind the goal looks epic.

Edit: sizeable but not huge... I thought it was the whole goal end but just the corner

Nah Poppa has basically set them up with a back 5 and low block

All behind the ball when they cede possession

Toure and Irankunda to lead the counters

Great finish from Irakunda. He's causing all sorts of problems on the counter.

Also glossed over but what a save by Beach a few minutes later from that volley.

Fancy Aussie to hold on here, maybe even nick another.

Three for me, and two for them.

Melbourne City will be after a new keeper now for next season.

Great performance.

We will likely need something similar in our first game.

At 22, he probably will get a move out of this WC. Ryan might not even be no. 1 too.

Tactical master class from Poppa. Being the first team to assemble Stateside maybe paying off for Socceroos. Over a month together to scheme and execute the game plan.

This Aussie team doesn't have an Aaron Mooy or even a Joe Bell to try match a side like Turkey in the possession stakes. But they do have a very quick, strong, great dribbler in Irankunda who will always pose a threat. It was basically 'rope a dope' from them.

Apparently alot of work done on their fitness in the lead in to have them be able to play the way they did. Nestroy looked buggered after his 60 mins

Huge win for Australia. If they beat Paraguay they are through.  May well be that Turkiiye had a better team man for man, but Popovic set the game up correctly and the opposite coach did not have a very good idea what to do.  I guess he will be scathing in post-match pressers.
The Australian defence that should get a medal for their performance today. Turkiye got nothing, zip, from them, they had to shoot from a distance at best.   And Beach had a blinder.
Still not sure how the Turkish keeper did not see the long distance shot that ended up in the net for the second goal. Was he unsighted by his own players?
