Darren Bazeley appointed coach. Won't he be coaching both the U17 and U20 in ASB at same time. Surely this is a stupid move??? Unless the U17 actually have no build up games?

ASB Youth doesn't commence until Jan 2014.
Maybe Fred will ask them to pay for a build up tour? oh...

Kotahitanga. We are one.

Interesting. I guess that makes Willy the U17 coach?

He applied.

Seems he played all his career at either RB or DM. Be good if he can coach us up a couple or five.

When The AW's played Honduras (which, incidentally drew a bigger crowd than the game in Wellington against Paraguay) at NHS, there were free buses from various points in Auckland including down town.

Stop complaining Wellington - you got the WCQ.

From memory, only marginally bigger. Given your bigger much population and iirc your game was on the weekend and ours was midweek. But yeah sure, go Auckland.

Midweek excuse is always weak sorry

02 Sep 02:34

How. Its proven time and time again that midweek means smaller crowds for various reasons. Therefore its an unfair comparison between a midweek and a weekend game, or at the very least it should be taken into account along with population and the fact that aucklands crowd wasn't all that much bigger (from memory)

Sorry not arguing auck v welly just midweek excuse fans etc give. Midweek games sell out all over the world. Kiwis will just give any excuse

02 Sep 02:59

Different culture, smaller population - so more difficult for a lot of the fans who would normally turn up on the weekend to go on midweek because of the resulting further distance from the stadium.

There are a number of factors that make it different than those that sell out overseas.

But that'd be off topic :)

Wow. That's a loud statement I guess.

Wouldn't be surprised if his angst over the lack of WC prep cost him any chance.

02 Sep 05:08

That and the way they played..

so when will this team come together for the national league? Bazley wont be about at u19 to watch players, and surely until then he will be focusing on u17s?

Think that is pretty hard. Can only play to the strength of what you have. And when you don't have large amounts of time together as a team, it hard to develop players.

Appointment makes perfect sense from a continuity point of view.  The current U17 crop has some very promising talent and the hope would be that they would form the backbone of the U20 team for 2015. Very good appointment imho.

That side is already 3 players down with Rufer, Ridenton and latest Phoenix FSE trialist.

Basically I still don't see the point of NZU20 in ASBP when I think at least 5 or 6 (the heart) will be playing elsewhere then coming into that set up before the tournament

12 Sep 03:39

these a facebook page set up by NZ football making contact with players for the summer etc, I recognise a couple of names but not available "asb premiership u twenty"

Heard today through someone that knows someone that knows someone (so really unreliable and most unlikely to be true) that he was told to go away and win again or get that winning feeling/pattern/culture back and then come back to NZF.

Thought it was really smart of them to do that at half time last night. The group I were with who arent even sports fans didnt know it was happening but were pretty excited about it (bandwagon ahoy)

22 Nov 01:42

I still think they have sort of missed a trick and could have made the draw a lot better. Not so happy to see it being such North Harbour centric.

Two New Zealand games in North Harbour. Play one in Christchurch and the other one in say Dunedin and you get 20,000 to both.  Napier is a big football area but gets no games. The final is also in a stadium which can only fit 25,000 people. It doesn't seem to be aiming very high. If you have zero confidence you can fill Eden Park then the final should be in Wellington.
23 Nov 02:02

Ryan ppl barely attend these games as seen in turkey. Final might get 12-15 but wont be a sellout. Nowhere near

If we can't get 25k to the final then we shouldn't have been made hosts. In 2008 we got 16k to North Korea vs USA which was women's u17's. Surely just given that men are playing and the players are a bit older should mean we can sell out North Harbour for the finals, semis and All Whites games. Canada got an average attendance of 22,000 in 2007 - I think we should be going for at least half that.

I truly think a successful U-20's tournament would do more for the game than making the World Cup. People will be able to get out and see stars of the future. We can have coaching clinics etc. Honestly, even if we have to give away some tickets to lesser games, the goal should be to get as many people as possible to the games.

Under 17 final in 99 sold out. For the women's U17 in 2008 smart marketing saw lots of schools given tickets which meant stadia looked good on TV. There will be good numbers at these games, and remember FIFA choose the venues - they control the tournament

Wrong, wrong, wrong!!! Actually when we hosted the FIFA u-17 World Cup in 1999 attendances were very good - I remember large crowds at QEII Stadium for group games - many thousands just at group games and that pattern was repeated all around NZ.

Even the Third place Play-off attracted 15,675 to North Harbour in the rain!

FIFA U-17 World Cup Final, North Harbour Stadium 1999: crowd of 22,859

We will get bigger attendances at the u-20 World Cup. Turkey was not typical at all! (even the u-17 World Cup usually attracts big crowds: Mexico 2011 avge attendance was 19,275 !!!)

FIFA u-20 World Cup stats (attds last page): http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/fifafacts/mencompu20/51/98/26/ip-305_01a_u20-stats.pdf

All tournaments 1977- 2009: total spectators = 9,807,456;  Avge spectators/ game =  16,346

Canada might be similar to NZ (football not the #1 sport, no regular exposure to top level matches). The 2007 tournament in Canada: avge crowds = 22,985 !!!

FIFA u-17 World Cup NZ 1999 - Good detail on Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_FIFA_U-17_World_Championship

North Harbour group games: Even NZ's opening match against USA had a crowd of 14,103 !!! USA V Poland: 10,265   (avge crowd about 9000)

McLean Park, Napier - smallest town hosting games: attds from 3950 to 5200

QEII Stadium, Chch: 4000- 6500

Carisbrook, Dunedin: 2180 - 5173

Quarters: 3500, 5600, 7251, 7483

Semis: USA v Australia, Chch: 5000;  Brazil v Ghana, North Harbour: 12,451

Third Place Play-off Ghana v USA, North Harbour:  15,675

The FIFA u-17 World Cup Final North Harbour 1999: Crowd of 22,859 (despite steady rain all day)!!!!

"On a day when football in New Zealand set a record for crowd attendance....a crowd of 22,859 paying spectators crammed the Stadium despite a steady drizzle to watch Brazil and the Australians..."

and comparison to other u-17 World Cups attendances:

Oceania Executive meeting over the weekend in Auckland decided on changes to Oceania qualifying for FIFA age group tournaments:

• Agreed that the OFC qualifying format for future FIFA age group World Cups will be:

o Changed from U-17 and U-20 Championships to U-16 and U-19 Championships to allow successful teams at least one year to prepare for the World Cup.
o The new age-group format to begin for the OFC U-19 Men’s Championship from May 22 to 30, 2014.

Clearly this means they're struggling for subscribers, err I mean supporters.

I was surprised at how much of the survey was about prospective ticket prices. Be interesting to see what price I have to pay to attend every game in my home town. Wonder if they are checking in on their forecast budgets?

Realistic traveling fan numbers will be small (max 1,000 for larger teams?) for a youth World Cup, right? Hope they ensure plenty of freebie tickets for school kids to boost crowds.

Kotahitanga. We are one.

17 Dec 23:20

I hope they generate enough interest amongst paying punters so they don't have to give away free tickets to school kids.

Asking very nicely and very politely. Can you sticky, this as if what I heard to night if Kiwi's want to see this The Best World Cup to ever get to NZ. Then you do not want to miss any public releases of information or you won't get to it in 2015. But have to watch TV.  Early bird venue tickets gunna be a bargin.
