I've thought they've been worse than usual, as he seems to know even less about these players than he does about those in the A League.

Yes, John Helm does seem to be showing signs that his better days are behind him

07 Jun 07:32

What better days? He has always spoken like a teacher to a class of 7 year olds.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I do think though that's it's a great way to get people to the games and watch them live instead of TV, the crouds have been increasing  at these WC games.

I haven't seen one highlight yet in the UK. If it wasn't for this forum I wouldn't even know that the competition was taking place.

Nothing on BBC, nothing on Sky. Only seen a couple of results printed in the corner of the newspaper. BBC are concentrating on the FIFA Women's World Cup while there's been more coverage of the Toulon Under 20 tournament on Eurosport.

Obviously I appreciate that England didn't qualify, but would have liked some highlights at least BBC!

English based All Whites fan! Would love to watch an All White game one day.

It's interesting that Sky TV seem to be hiring foreign camera crews and equipment to cover the tournament - they obviously wouldn't have enough employees of their own to cover seven cities and four games a day.

I get to sit right next to the pitch at AMI Stadium in Christchurch with a friend in a wheelchair and we get to hear the woman supervising the cameras on our side of the ground chatting to the camera crew near to us in Spanish and also on her walky-talky to the TV director.

She beamed from ear to ear when my friend Kevin talked to her in Spanish but was rather pre-occupied at the time tidying some cables so ball boys and passing officials wouldn't trip on them. Kevin's a Kiwi who used to live in South America, Spain and Portugal and teaches Spanish.

pretty sure FIFA gave the contract to film the world cup to another company - i think SKY are the host broadcaster but it's not OSB being used to film which SKY would normally do.

Sky aren't filming the games. They are just the broadcaster within NZ.

Yet again the highlights package of these games are a disgrace...they seem to miss all the highlights!

14 Jun 22:32

I watched the first half of the game against Portugal on sky but had a commitment I couldn't get out of for the second half. I thought I'd listen to it on the radio but radio sport was doing talk back on the rugby, I thought I'd listen to it on radio sport extra which is the online only radio station that plays live commentary for games that no one cares about (like the Phoenix) while things that people actually care about play on the main station (like wife beaters and rugby talkback).

I ended up checking twitter constantly, overall an appalling lack of support by the media, but what can you expect.

15 Jun 01:18

FIFA charge quite a lot of money for rights and I've heard radio sport jocks say on different occassions if they paid for the rights to these tournaments then they wouldn't be able to afford playing anything else.  Why they couldn't do updates though is beyond me, but not surprising as it's Veitch on RS and Brendan Telfer on Radio Live on the weekends

One reason is that there is a fair bit of sunshine,  the sports coverage is miles better and  you don't get rugby jammed down your throat.

I'd give the NZ media a 4/10 for their coverage of this tournament.  Prime news tonight didn't mention the final, TVNZ did about 30 seconds worth and about the same for TV3.    Egg chasing always wins.

21 Jun 18:58

I see that media fella Burgess rates John Helm. I wish i had some of what he smokes. Helm, I do acknowledge his knowledge of the game, but really..His commentaries are the "Keith Quinn" of football. His constant drone when there is no need of anything to be said (You can pause from speaking for more than 3 seconds in a strectch John), his ability to talk to the viewer as if they are 6 year olds in class. Sorry, but imo he ranks down there with Fred De Jong and his mate. Time to retire John, time to retire.

Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

They predictably gave much prominence to the u-20 Rugby championship win by New Zealand in Italy played on Sunday morning which probably only the players' family and friends were interested in.

Only 7000 attended that final, while only 3600 went to see NZ beat France in the semi.

The final was played in that world sporting capital of Cremona in the back blocks of Italy.

I'd imagine that worldwide TV viewing figures for that one were pretty mediocre too.

"The number of participating nations was reduced to 12 before the 2010 tournament due to financial reasons."

Massive international interest in the rugby u-20's then!!!

When it was hosted in NZ last year, crouds were also mediocre with some games only attracting a few hundred people.

Only about 5000 attended the final.

But Rugby is a global sport whereas football - the poofters game, is only played in 209 countries and territories so obviously no one would be interested at all.
