It's a behind closed doors game so won't be streamed My guess is they'll start with the same XI, they have had plenty of chances in the last year to play different players and give them a chance to see what they can do but they have stuck with essentially the same team so why would they change now?
Bump anyone heard anymore have promised some to some out of town people but as you can guess they are reluctant to come if we arnt getting them. Dont say ring the Phoenix thats just hopeless.
Has anyone recieved theirs yet?
I have been checking me emails daily.
Na, was promised mid week but nothing yet. Interesting also as NZF has now sent out emails as well giving free tickets to the following games too. Will be the ones really not selling well.
Dunedin/Ōtepoti Match 3: Philippines v. Switzerland – Friday, 21 July (17:00)
Wellington/Te Whanganui-a-Tara Match 5: Spain v. Costa Rica – Friday, 21 July (19:30)
Hamilton/Kirikiriroa Match 6: Zambia v. Japan – Saturday, 22 July (19:00)
Auckland/Tāmaki Makaurau Match 20: Spain v. Zambia – Wednesday, 26 July (19:30)
This off-season is hall of fame already, first a couple of straight old dudes telling the masses what is and isn't homophobia in the academy thread, and now we have a race war lmao

Oh, we ALSO got in this thread "we shouldn't celebrate Pride because maybe normal women are scared away from football by angry lesbians". Not knowing what homophobia is is pretty widespread, it seems.

I feel like this is an opinion which is doing the rounds with the oldies. My old man came home from the golf club and told us about how all the oldies at the club were talking about how lesbians were scaring other girls out of sports like cricket and soccer. No actual proof of course but to them this seems believable so fudge it, it's true
I'm not going to look it up right now, but I do believe I remember the former Matilda remembering older queer women sexually harassing younger women within football culture. But that kind of garbage happens precisely within marginalized groups who have been ghettoized/pushed into a closet.
The more that we celebrate Pride, the contribution of queer women to sport, and even the fact that women's elite sport is disproportionately queer, the less that kind of toxicity which thrives in secrecy will happen, the less that any young person has to fear that participation in football will mean they'll be peer pressured into doing something they don't like, the more seriously any such accusations will be taken just as we take accusations of men being creepy to women now.
I've only heard this third-hand, but apparently in top-ranking NZ men's football in the 1980s there was sexual harassment or even abuse of younger players by older players - not a "gay" thing, but the kind of thing that goes on in prisons to establish pecking order. Healthy sexuality and relationships, welcomed by the wider community, drive that kind of filth out.

Don't forget the racism in the Qatar match thread. It's been a real doozy in here lately.

Of course we should celebrate Pride culture. And agree that driving it all underground like in the past just causes more problems & toxicity. I've got a gay cousin and she went through a tough time, but is in happy place now. Gay players (especially male) brave enough to come out like Josh Cavallo should be applauded. If women's football is where a lot of the lesbian community can 'find their tribe' and be themselves, great.
But don't be arrogant and say that without the gay community women's football wouldn't exist. No one community, country, ethnic group or whatever is bigger than the World Game. And he's what Lisa De Vanna said. It wasn't nice reading, and hopefully that stuff no longer happens, just like alot of the old toxic shark is being stamped out of the men's game. But a long way still to go. https://www.si.com/soccer/2021/10/06/lisa-de-vanna-australia-womens-soccer-abuse-bullying-harassment

I suspect that it's FIFA bro. The booking system sucks and Phoenix probably gave us the times they were given.
England playing Canada on the Sunshine Coast, QLD as well, behind closed doors. Interesting that some are like that, incl the Ferns match - whilst Matildas are playing the French in front of 50,000!
I see via livescore site that Spain beat Vietnam 9-0...kinda makes our 2-0 look a little like small fry. The site also says the NZ are playing Italy at 7pm.
"The Matariki match was to be played behind closed doors, with no media or spectators present, and only the line-ups, scorers and final result will be made public."
Italy (FIFA rank 16) defeated the Football Ferns 1 - 0 in a behind closed doors warm up fixture at Keith Hay Park in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland this evening.
The goal came from AS Roma’s Valentina Giacinti in the 23rd minute.
Final Score: New Zealand 0 Italy 1 (23’ Valentina Giacinti)
Football Ferns - Starting XI: Victoria Esson (46’ Anna Leat) Katie Bowen Claudia Bunge Michaela Foster Jacqui Hand (77’ Paige Satchell) Betsy Hassett (77’ Gabi Rennie) Ria Percival Ali Riley Indiah-Paige Riley (46’ Olivia Chance) Malia Steinmetz (75’ Annalie Longo) Hannah Wilkinson (75’ Milly Clegg)
Unused Substitutes: Elizabeth Anton Daisy Cleverley Grace Jale Erin Nayler
Any reason why she’s out of favour? Forward Grace Jale did not feature for the second match in a row, a curious turn of events after she played 90 minutes in each of the Ferns’ previous four matches and started in seven of their previous eight.
Encouraging result. The Ferns must have been competitive. Against a good European team. But an all to familiar score line. As a goal for us would have been a big boost. All to play for now on Thursday in front of a record crowd.
The Vietnam result worries me, we simply didnt score enough goals in that game despite dominating the first half especially, but Vietnam are a very weak side and we should have done far better. I dont see us getting 2nd place in the group, Norway I think will be a very rude awakening for us in the opening game and even the Phillipines will be a tough game. I really hope in a couple of weeks time Im eating humble pie here. Im going to the Norway game hoping for the best but looking forward to seeing a packed Eden Park for a womans game.
The Australia v France game is currently live on youtube.
Great result for the Matildas. The whole match is available on You Tube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUKviGZvCR4 France and the Aussies would be two of my favourites to go a long way in the tournament. Australia - FIFA ranking 10th; only one loss in their last ten matches (strangely to Scotland), wins in their last two over France and England, wins in February over Spain and last November vs. Sweden. The Matildas started a bit shakily under Gustavsson from 2020 and have only hit their form since September last year when they lost two matches at home to Canada. Of the 35 matches since he took over they've won 16 but lost 14 (drew 5). That's the worst winning percentage of any Matildas coach since Tom Sermanni's second spell in charge finished in 2012 (Sermanni in his second seven year spell has the best winning % of any Matildas coach in history). Matildas squad: ten players at English Women's Super League clubs; five in the Swedish league, two from the USA, one each from Spain, France and Norway, only three from the A-League. FRANCE: FIFA ranking = 5th (have never been ranked below tenth in their entire women's football history) New coach (since March) is the hugely successful men's coach Herve Renard who coached the Saudis to victory over Argentina at last year's World Cup. Two time Africa Cup of Nations winner. Coached Morocco at 2018 World Cup. France scored 54 goals and conceded only four in ten qualifying matches (under the previous coach who was unpopular with many senior players). Yesterday's loss was their first in four matches under Renard.
Sky have been showing a very good official FIFA World Cup preview series (half hour episode for each group) on Wednesday nights on Sky Sport 1 (repeated on following days on various channels). Looks at how each side qualified, the key players and the coach plus a good tactical analysis of each side by a leading women's football coach. Find all episodes here on Sky Go: https://www.skygo.co.nz/show/mac_sh_144332 If you're not a Sky customer, the series is available for free on 7plus in Australia. Not sure if it's geo blocked but a VPN will get around that. Takes two minutes to sign up for 7plus (no address required, just a post code -use "5000" which is a valid Aussie post code). There will be other women's World Cup stuff on there too. https://7plus.com.au/fifa-womens-world-cup-2023-preview-series
What do you think the average attendance of the non-NZ non-US group games in New Zealand going to be?. I have a bad feeling that it won't be impressive
Just got my four tickets from the Nix for the WWC come through
Did they come from the Nix or the FIFA ticket site. Any wonder sales are slow if thats what you have to do to get free tickets. Thanks Nix but bloody hell what a process.
For the Vietnam game sure it was only 2-0, but the great thing was that we created enough chances to score another 8 or so goals. Hassett missed by a couple of centimetres and Jacqui hand missed a sitter a short time after her goal. 4-0 would have been a better reflection of the dominance. Also although we have been in camp for like 9 weeks Jacqui hand, Hassett and Ali Riley and maybe others have only been there for the last couple of weeks and we are still integrating 5-6 players who have been long term absentees into the team. They won’t be shocked at the speed and quality of the Norwegians, they will have done their homework on them, it will be more the occasion that might get to them. With the players we have on the wings we could catch them on the counter and with Percival or Foster if she’s on taking set pieces we are a chance on set pieces too. A good result for us would be restricting them to minimal chances, not making big errors in the defensive third and creating some chances. 2-0 loss could be ok depending on how the game goes. We will see next Thursday. If we can build on the positives from the Vietnam game that would be great.AlfStamp

If anyone is wanting to watch the WWC on Sky Sport Now, they are offering a package for $34.99 for the tournament. No idea if the current 10% off promotion works on that package https://www.welcome.skysportnow.co.nz/mexicano
