https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/women-in-sport/300649412/fifa-denies-reports-it-could-postpone-2023-womens-world-cup-to-favour-europe

The motivation, according to the report, is due to lower-than-expected TV rights income from European broadcasters, which L’Equipe says are currently below those received for the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France - due to the timezone differences, which would see matches played in early-morning timeslots in Europe, and also because August is seen as an unfavourable period for broadcasters.

Almost all the playoff teams are lined up following the conclusion of multiple tournaments... only the one European playoff spot to be determined now.

Who's planning on going to this? It'll be interesting and high stakes but sadly it's all in Auckland and Hamilton... damn.

Do any of these countries have particularly big populations up north? Could see PNG and Thailand getting a bit of support.

The Latino diaspora (mostly admittedly Argentinian) might get behind the 3 Latino teams en masse. Could depend if the venues are 'flare friendly'!

But there is a reasonable Chilean expat community in NZ in it's own right, going back to a few escaping Pinochet in the 70s. Plus all the young backpacker ones, can from today August 1st, start applying for visas to enter NZ again.

Will be doing a visa application for young Peruvian relative August 11th. Kid is a gifted footballer too. So if anyone knows a football club around Papamoa (where my brother lives)/Mt Maunganui, that would have a few Spanish speaking players please let me know.

The format is brutal though for half it will be all over in one game and then they will have to play a meaningless friendly afterwards.

Its hard to predict who will make it through, but I'm almost certain the UEFA team will. And are the football ferns scheduled to play the UEFA team in a friendly here?.

Not sure who watched it but it was a good game.

Went down to my local and watched it and the place was packed to the rafters.  Have to say after watching the women's Euros, NZ is waaayyy off the pace.

European women's football is coming along in leaps and bounds and from what I saw, the days of the Americas (Brazil, USA, Canada) being the sports powerhouses is numbered.  I think the two teams in the final would put the HeNix under a lot of pressure.

Thanks god NZ is the host otherwise there is no way we will make to the round of 16. My prediction is second place in the group and us losing the round of 16.

Honestly it will still be pretty touch and go. Our record against European opponents is awful. We should be able to beat the 4th seed team (but no guarantees I guess), but 3rd seed will likely be the critical one we are battling to get through.

If we weren't 1st seed due to being host or having all the games at home, yeah absolutely we'd be pretty stuffed.

Personally, I hope we get England and the Netherlands (my parentage) - but any of the European sides already directly qualified will be strong.
Brazil are always a drawcard - the only strong country from South America in women's football.
USA and Canada - way stronger than any other countries from CONCACAF and will draw crowds.
As far as attracting immigrant communities (apart from England and the Netherlands already mentioned), South Korea and China would be the ones, with our large communities from those countries (and they get behind their football teams too).
The Philippines would attract those immigrants, though Filipinos are mostly not big football followers and barely follow their national sides (most Filipinos I've talked to weren't aware their country had qualified).

Tickets locked in too.  Nabbed the NZ Game, the round of 26 and quarter final.

If I read it right, depending on the results the Ferns could play their round of 26 there?

Yes. But it is only available in the first sales phase which finishes before the draw is done. So you would buy the tickets having absolutely no idea who would be playing (except the NZ game).
There seems to be no advantage to buy these multi packages as the price is the same as buying the tickets individually for the teams you want when you know the draw.

You have to select your games at purchase. But Ferns plus 2 knock out games is a no-brainer. Yes, could have selected individual tickets once the draw is out, but locking in good seats and getting on the hype train now!

Wouldn't say so, probably at the weaker end of the European teams that qualified. Ranked very similarly to us. Drew with an experimental Australia. With it being a proper home game for us it should be a close one.

More detail on the draw tonight:
(from FTBL, a pretty decent Aussie football website, good for all A-League, Socceroos, Matildas, Women's World Cup news etc.)

https://www.ftbl.com.au/news/heres-how-to-understand-the-world-cup-draw-tonight-586768

The draw for the FIFA Women's World Cup will take place on Saturday night, led by two-time winner Carli Lloyd.
A team will be drawn from each of four pots to form eight four-team groups.

POT 1: Australia (13), New Zealand (22), United States (1), Sweden (2), Germany (3), England (4), France (5), Spain (6).
POT 2: Canada (7), Netherlands (8), Brazil (9), Japan (11), Norway (12), Italy (14), China (15), South Korea (17).
POT 3: Denmark (18), Switzerland (21), Ireland (24), Colombia (27), Argentina (29), Vietnam (34), Costa Rica (37), Jamaica (43).
POT 4: Nigeria (45), Philippines (53), South Africa (54), Morocco (76), Zambia (81), three play-off winners.
* World ranking in brackets
Teams from the same confederation (except for Europe) cannot be drawn against each other - meaning Australia cannot be drawn against Asian rivals such as Japan.
Immediately following the draw, a separate ballot will put the teams into slots in each group, to determine what times and cities they will play in.
Three places are yet to be filled in the 32-nation tournament, with New Zealand hosting a 10-team play-off in February to complete the line-up.
