Wonder how many have stepped forward. My guess O.

If he wants to unearth more kiwis, his best option is surely Aussie; look at emigration numbers over the last 20 years. However Hudson will be lucky to find many ready for AW over next couple of years. With a longer term view - there must be thousands of kids with Kiwi heritage playing over there - and of course NZF will have no way of identifying them.

On the plus side, they'll never be eligible for Aussie citizenship so we don't have to worry about the Aussies taking them.

That is not necessarily the case.

I know. But as it stands, New Zealanders emigrating to Australia have no pathway to Australian residence, and consequently no pathway to citizenship. That might change in the future, of course. And you can always apply for residence under the regular immigration categories but the vast majority of kiwis in Aussie wouldn't be eligible for it.

Any New Zealander coming to Australia can become a resident. it is citizenship and the ability to get welfare that is hard.

That is not necessarily the case.

Rather than kiwis qualifying for Aussie passport, the point is that there must be plenty of kids who've been raised in Aussie who have kiwi heritage and thus eligible for AWs. Point is NZF will have no idea who they are, will they?

Yeah, but if they aren't eligible to represent Australia and are quality hopefully they'll make themselves known to NZF

Lots will be eligible to represent both countries. I reckon NZF needs to be proactive about talent ID of eligible kiwi-Aussies.

Well it seems like Fitzgerald was the player in Asia Hudson was keen on, but we all know that isn't going to happen.

What about the kid at Newcastle Jets who used to be with the Gold Coast?

Realistically, aren't we talking about A-league level players? Can't imagine there would be many who wouldn't know already. There's the WSW player, but he's already turned us down.

All he wants his some depth, which is fair enough. When they name an All Whites squad there's usually just Louis Fenton that misses out. But isn't that just the problem of having one professional team in New Zealand? We pick all the Phoenix New Zealanders then our overseas-based players fit in where the Phoenix imports would be.

Since 2001. If you shifted to Aussie before then you're fine. Or if you applied under another visa category after then rather than just turning up on a kiwi passport.

Exactly (apart from maybe the random eligible player coming up through a NPL team). The chat about finding AW eligible players in oz is a long term player ID strategy. Hudson's framework will be much much more immediate; and as has been suggested if this forum isn't collectively aware of a potential player, he's probably not out there. While I respect wanting to develop an exhaustive list of potential players, I hope Hudson doesn't spend too much time on it; and gets on with doing the best with what he's got.

I think Michael Fitzgerald and Albert Reira are two players that would walk into the All Whites starting XI and seem the two best chances of being available.

The guy from WSW and potentially Mitch Cooper from Newcastle are two younger players that probably wouldn't make the squad anyhow.

I doubt he's actually doing a lot of the ground work. He may well be talking about it on radio hoping to spark some interest - maybe there is a kid playing footy out there who has a kiwi grandparent bu never thought about playing for us. You don't look you'll never find anything. I f this "search" gets zero results then it confirms our position of having no depth and no-one challenging the current squad - if it draws out one or two Winston's who play off shore and have NZ ancestory then brilliant.

All for us scouring the world for better talent. As the report on Stuff says today the USA team has done it in the last world cup and famously the Irish did it to great fanfare back in Ireland in the mid to late 90's with Jack Charlton at the helm. Diego Costa did the same with Brazil/Spain.

We need to have a good, RATIONAL debate about the merits of bringing in foreign players. In terms of Joe Public here, I don't think they will care too much if someone born in Japan/Russia/England/Australia with a NZ parent/grandparent decides to commit to the All Whites. If it improves the team and they start winning more games then the public will be in behind them, and the NZ media will be in behind them and make football more popular.

Maybe he just turned Ricki down? Who knows, he may change his mind.

Im all for this though, I dont care if we have 11 englishmen out there if it makes us a better side. And it sounds promising for lads like Henderson and Keat who sound like they'll get a fair crack at the squad again. Cant remember the last time either of them played for NZ

Henderson was part of the squad for the play-offs vs. Mexico last November.

Came on as a 73 min. sub for Rojas in the Wellington leg:

http://int.soccerway.com/matches/2013/11/20/world/...

Hasn't been selected since then  - one factor is that the Scandinavian leagues are played April - November and so Keat and Henderson haven't been available for many of the AW's friendlies.

Henderson has again struggled with injury this season and hasn't appeared in a matchday squad for Stabaek in the Norwegian league since July. He was injury-free for Mjallby in Sweden last season.

Keat is starting every game for Falkenberg in Sweden with five matches to go in the season (struggling to avoid relegation).

So what you mean is Henderson went against the norm and was fit for once. That guy is always injured.

Maybe if Henderson wants to be part of the AWs he needs to do as a spider on a mirror, and look at himself from the other side.

Wrong. I know, i've tried.

If you moved here before 2001 it's a lot easier, though.

If Keat has started every game for his club in the Swedish first Division then we need to have another look at him IMO. His spell with the AW's  never worked out under Ricki but he has now got two years extra playing pro football at a good level. A new coach like Hudson might get him working OK with the AW's. Surely someone who is playing DM professionally in Europe must be an option to play DM for the AW"s. Because apart from him whats left...... a rookie like Tuiloma playing 5th Div in France and Tim "no club united" Payne

Actually, Bill played 77 minutes for OM senior team last week in a friendly match.  Prior to that he played the week before for OM Reserves and was named in senior OM squad for two Ligue 1 matches immediately prior to that.  OM currently top of Ligue 1.  Hardly 5th Div ...

Is that what the Big Book of Football Rules says ? Because I would have thought that playing for a Reserve Team or playing for a Senior Team (even at friendly level) was still 'playing' ...

Was just trying to point out that hardly 5th Div.

Actually, more to the point, I'd rate the opportunity to work under Bielsa as priceless for a young player - has to rate in top 10 managers in the game for me.

Trying as much as he can to make the national teams mimmick a club setup, which is the way to go for the All Whites (there may be some who might not like that end goal of improving the All Whites might come at the cost of some age group players/results)

I don't think this sounds sobering, I think it sounds extremely positive.  Finally the cosy NFZ operation is being exposed.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/10626927/Hud...

I'd say from the sounds of this that Fred is VERY lucky to still have a job.  The top level management of the sport has been an absolute joke and as he admits, 2010 completely papered over the cracks.  Which explains why the 4 years since have been completely rudderless, zero leadership of the elite game.

I still think there is a concentration risk having one guy in charge of everything but it sounds like we're moving forward (I hope)
