Argentina vs Germany

I could never lower myself to support a German team but, yes, from their first game they have looked very, very impressive - even in that 10 man loss to Serbia. Hard to see anyone stopping them now.

As for Maradona he's just going to have to suck it and keep on sucking it.

Too many attack midfielders and forwards not enough defensive ones for the Argies. Pastore, Di Maria and Higuain were easily beaten for the third.

Maradona expected Mascherano to cover everything, as good as Mascherano is he can't cover Ozil, Schweinsteiger, Khedira, Muller. Esteban Cambiasso really should have been in this team.

This. I mean, pretty obvious, but it was such a clear weakness in their team, and you knew a better team would exploit the (huge) gaps in midfield at some point.

I was pretty sure Germany would win, tbh, but what a performance. Never by that margin. But still, come on Spain! Going to be an extremely tough game.

absolutely fantastic! so happy with that win

Loew got his tactics spot on in that one, Boateng and Lahm defended very narrowly, and let Di Maria and Rodriguez swing pointless cross after cross into the penalty area - and onto the heads of the two 6'5"ish CB's.

Find it beyond hilarious that Messi couldn't get a goal all world cup

oh and I'm pissed about Muellers yellow considering Di Maria didn't get a yellow for his handball on roughly 2 mins which was far more blatant and intentional than Muellers

I thought that was crap too. Consistancy would be nice.

Germany are just too good. I love watching them play, I hope they win the whole thing. They deserve it.

Remember it's about goals scored, not player of the tournament.

If Germany win this Cup, then Klose will have two out of three, with the Golden Ball still up for grabs. That's not bad. And the way he's going, he could well have two Golden Shoes. That's consistency.

His record is currently 2002 - 5 goals, 2006 - 5 (Golden shoe), 2010 - 4.

Ronaldo got 8 goals at the 2002 World Cup, including two in the final. Beat that Miroslav.

Three for me, and two for them.

Not just great, try greatest player of all time. Single handedly (f**k off with your puns here) won Argentina the 1986 World Cup and single handedly drove an average Napoli side to the Scudetto in 1987. Also worshiped as a god by every Argentinian the world round. So yeah, he can snort all the coke he likes, he's earnt it.

Have to get past Spain first. I understand why Germany are favourites based on the way both teams have played so far at this World Cup but can't understand why many are readily writing Spain off so easily.

A Germany-Holland final has the potential to be a classic, and i think Germany would have the better of them.

I don't think that Spain have played their best by any means. If the Germans beat them, then they will be too strong for the Dutch. Apart from being good players, they are so athletic.

Can't write off Spain at all. It's a contrast to the Euro champs two years ago where Spain were clearly the best team the whole tournament and Germany / Russia were next best. This time Germany are looking the best - I think most people realise that Spain can do better than they have done, but I have to base my opinion on what I've seen over the last few weeks. Even if Spain do bring their a-game, it'd still be a close match. If they don't, then the Germans will surely win.

Maybe one thing in Spain's favour is that Germany play an expansive, attacking game which should allow Spain a lot more freedom to counterattack themselves. Most of Spain's matches so far have seen them up against packed defences as teams try to shut down their obviously lethal attacking mids and grab a goal on the break.

Could even be a high scoring affair, but I still think the Germans will prevail.

This. The German bit.

Although strangely I feel quite sorry for Maradona.

Will be a great semi-final between Germany and Spain - I'd lean heavily towards the Germans.

And as much as i'd prefer to see Holland beat Germany in the final I think these young "turks" will be too much for them.

Could never support them but the football has been pretty flawless.

Who's Turkish in the squad bar Ozil?  Or does 'turk' just mean young person and I'm too much of a 'turk' to realize it?

I bet the Germans are hoping that Torres gets the nod to start the match.  I seriously think Germany have been far more impressive but I also think that Spain can play a lot better than they've been playing - and Germany were shown to be beatable by Serbia.  So should be a great game.

I await the verdict of Paul the Octopus with baited breath.

What Buffy said in defence of Maradona. He is the man. The worst part about the Argy game was him in tears near the end as his team got destroyed. Awful. What a man. And yeah, the best player ever.

And yip, lots of people are writing Spain off. I'm hoping the Germans have peaked and Spain are building nicely for the final- clutching at straws a bit though! Going to be an interesting match nonetheless.

Germans don't peak EN. They just ruthlessly grind their opponents into submission one game at a time. I'd still fancy Spain to beat them, but Del Bosque should drop Torres who is clearly unfit and try switch things up a bit in attack, otherwise if they're too predictable and one dimensional they will get done.

Three for me, and two for them.

That's one hell of a dodgy outlook Buffy. What you've just said is if you are one of the top five footballers of all time*, you are allowed to take illegal drugs? Cheat on your wife? Abandon your child - who had to wait until he was 17 to even meet dad? Not pay your taxes? Take performance enhancing drugs? Maradona is guilty of all these.

And you also presumably defend other players who break the law or do despicable stuff on the basis of how good they are at football. Extending beyond football, I trust your consistency also concludes OJ Simpson should never have been put on trial for murder or be in prison currently, as one of NFL's best running backs - or does this allowed lawlessness only apply to gifted exponents of one sport?

*He's certainly up there as one of the all-time greats. Pele, Di Stefano, Puskas, Maradona are all in the top five... pointless to think about where he would place. Different eras with different levels of television coverage, which pretty much bias the running order in itself. As countless football polls have discovered, the more recent players tend to command a disproportionate level of votes relative.

So, as a player, yeah one of the best ever. As a human being, a more dislikeable person is hard to imagine.

Maradona hasn't killed anyone, so it's very easy to imagine more dislikeable people. Also loads of people take drugs, doesn't make them bad. Also lots of people cheat on their partners, people on here go on about it like it's worse than cancer. Doesn't Terry dodge taxes? Or his brother? Abandoning your child is poor form though, i hope he has done his best to make up for it or i'd be disappointed.

Good day.

Just because Maradona was the greatest footballer ever, doesn't make him "ten times the man" that Leggy is. Now I don't know Leggy from a bar of soap, but I'd be surprised if he had as many personal failings as Maradona. I didn't know the definition of being a man was being a great footballer. If that's the case I should hand in my man badge.

But hey, I like Maradona. He's the sort of colourful character that makes sport more intriging. I hope he continues to be prominent in the game.
