I think what we need to remember iis smetz off side was still an error of the Lino at that speed I suggest no one could see the touch. . The dive by man of match Italian actor was cheating deliberate and not really relevant as Reid had already pulled his shirt, which is an offence punishable by a penalty in the box and a yellow card to do nothing than to sucker the ref in cause despite thier dominance could not score. . What we have to realise re Smeltzs goal is that none of the Italians appealed for offside, so they must have thought it was a legitmate goal.

I still maintain that even slowed right down you can't tell whether the ball hit anyones head

Interestingly, only Reid appealed for offside when Slovakia scored their goal in the first game, and it was a fairly obvious one. The players don't necessarily have the best idea of everything going on at any given time, so going by player reactions is hardly ever accurate (witness also how many times defenders appeal when it's not even close to being offside).

Actually a few of the NZ players looked at the linesman after the Slovakia goal.

I still maintain that even in super slowmo you can't tell if the ball touched anyone

Are you suggesting the other 23 free kicks were not legitimate?
Get real.

Legitimate=soft. "ONE OF THE ONLY INSTANCES". Get some glasses. That comment was really directed at my interpretation of the inequity of the refs calls and that a significant proportion of them given against us were soft. So no, that's not what I was suggesting.

In an interview Smeltz mentioned the ball was played on by Reid. I can't remember if it was a television or print interview. But while that was an inadvertant off side, De Rossi's dive was blatant cheating. Sure there was a tug and technically that's a penalty. But then you've got a penalty at every corner, and de Rossi was never going to get the ball.

It's not really the penalty that pisses me off about Italy's performance, it's their diving throughout. Every time two players contest for a ball and Fallon would win it, the Italian player would go down clutching their face where there had been no contact. It was disgusting and I look forward to the cheats getting knocked out. Fancy doing that sh*t to beat lowly New Zealand! There is no greater compliment they could have given us.

Just found this looking for Smeltz's goal on youtube

Initially I thought Reid got a touch, but by the last replay I felt Reid's marker was the one flicking it on to Smeltz. Haven't got round to watching a replay since the game, and the general opinion here seems to point firmly at Reid, so I'm probably wrong.

As for the Italian penalty, yes it was legit. I think most of the indignation here (if poorly expressed) is that shirt pulling and grappling at set pieces happens week in and week in the big leagues, and only sporadically gets punished. Consistency in this area is what I'd like to see.

During the match, I was praying we'd get a corner, just to see what would happen. Shame we didn't.

I was thinking the same thing the next day when watching Portugal play North Korea. It was 35-40 minutes before Cristiano Ronaldo went down in a heap, which I thought showed a amazing lack of respect for the Koreans on his part. Obviously the second half justified this in the end, but it was only 1-0 in the first half. I would have expected to see him rolling everywhere had he felt they were a genuine threat.

Fair enough. I can see what you mean now, but to me legitimate means legal not soft.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

I'm pretty sure if we'd won a corner, as soon as fallon's feet left the ground an Italian would have fallen over clutching his face.

They were pulling each others shirts which happens all the time and deRossi dived AFTER he was let go.
