Nervously excited for tomorrow night.

The line-up will be revealed soon and we all wait with bated breath.

Important that we start off well...settle...and we'll be alright.

I'd imagine the Slovaks will be cautious early too.

I am not sure that Vicelich has the legs to hold the midfield.

Case in point the Aussies this morning were carved up by a quick responsive and very young German midfield.

Two points.

1, The Aus midfield wasn't the problem it was the grossly over-rated Neill and crocked boozehag Moore who both should have been put out to pasture years ago.  Our defenders are the reverse of this and Nelsen is so much better than any Aus defenders it is astonishing.

2, We're not playing Germany.  The Slovaks won't have a quick reponsive midfield and even if they do they won't be near the German level.

How's my driving? - Whine here

Starting to get nervous, not expecting or hoping for a win or even a draw, I just dont want us to get thrased, keep it down to a two goal margin, and maybe score one ourselves.

SNAP

HOW THE HELL HAS JEREMY CHRISTIE BECOME A BETTER CHOICE THAN MCGINCHEY??
McG had a weak game against Aussie, and Christie did ok against Serbia and Slovenia? Slightly different kinds of players?

as for the Vicelich thing, we will see if it happens...

After watching 5 World Cup games I am now really really nervous about the AW'S. The games so far have been just what you would expect from an elite tournament. All the teams have been tactically good, they are crammed with players who are technically good and play the game at a high pace(I exclude Australia from the last few sentances)

How the AW's step up and handle this will be key. We won't catch Slovakia on a bad day.....they have been preparing for this for ages. They will come at us hard and fast with good technical play. They will have studied our play and will have organised tactics to combat us.

What has been obvious so far(apart from the OZ/kraut game) is how tight the games have been. Defenses rule so far..all the games have been low scoring affairs. In these sort of games you might only get a couple of half chances all match.  For NZ to have any hope they will have to nail any chance they get.

Watching the Oz/German game I got this kind of sick feeling. All this talk of us getting to the second round is crap. Yes this probably is our best team ever and yes we can have some hope but the cold reality is that the gulf between us and the worlds top 30 teams is still a chasm.

no one that i regard as a sane human has gone on record talking about the second round

i might have missed something but it isn't a view that people who know the game - and can be termed sane, by most neutral judges - seem to be promoting

Nervous excitement is my mood. Curious to see how we do, excited because getting a result is a real possibility, nervous because if we don't play at our best, it might be a long 90 minutes.

For what it's worth I also like the 3-4-1-2 idea with McGlinchey behind Fallon and Smeltz or Killen but I think that's more an idea for the future. For this game I think we have to go with what we do best and the 3-4-3 has been when we've been at our best in the warm-ups. Think Vicelich will do well as defensive midfielder though, Christie still gives the ball away too often, and a stronger midfield will help give us more chances on the counter-attack.

Disagree.

Our back line is streets ahead of Australia. Nelsen. Reid. and Smith. much much better than Moore and Neil. Remember the goals we shipped against them? A Killen through ball and Andy Boyens asleep.

Our tactical nous with Ricki, Brian Turner and Raul is much much better than Pim. Raul remember was with the Socceroos at the last world cup.

Our strikers are just a step below premiership, and with Chris Wood potentially capable of very big things.

If we get it right, have things go our way, and have a few suprises or moments of genius protected by a lot of hard graft and concentration we can absolutely do this. The opposition are human. Nervous yes. but not overawed.

It's nice to be optimistic and dream, believe me i've dreamed of us winning a game and even qualifying for the 2nd Round too. But let's be honest, all three teams we come up against will be quality opposition and it will take us playing out of our skins and then some to give us the chance of taking one point or even all three from any one of them.

But hey, i'll keep dreaming for another 25 hours at least.

Three for me, and two for them.

No doubting the quality of the opposition. This is the best All Whites team of my life time. It deserves to be there. It is not apologising for being from NZ and playing round ball. They are planning how they are going to beat these teams. No dreaming there. There should be some belief.

I'm gunna get my All Whites jersey and scarf on and be with them all the way.

Yep, the dreaming is one of the best parts of being at the WC. I remain in confident hope of a miracle just as I was 29 years ago the night before our game against Saudi Arabia....

This takes me back to the huge excitement in my Worcester St flat in Christchurch in 1982, watching the games in Spain.

We performed VERY creditably then. And we are a class above what we were then, in global terms.

I think a point in this group will be fantastic. I'll take it.

I do not expect us to be thrashed by even Italy. Really. Unlike Aussie (with their world ranking) v Germany, 0-4 against Italy would not be a thrashing for us.

It's here. Enjoy the moment, everybody!!!!

Latest News from the Slovakian FA website (in translation) Click here:

Bad translations mostly but I gleaned:
Quotes from Slovak players on NZ (These guys actually respect us):

Hamsik (Napoli midfielder): "New Zealanders are characterized by particulalry high quality defensive, preventing the ten players on the ball. They also have very high quality reaction."

Holosko (striker): "New Zealanders are particularly strong on the defensive and share the English style of play...Preference long balls, we could see even against Serbia. We cannot accede to their style of play and as she kicks the ball ahead. Coach Cech stressed to us that we play on the floor and try to keep the ball as long as possible. Only if we have possession at least 60 percent of the time they can be overcome..."

Miroslav Stoch (Dutch title-winning midfielder): " Coach stressed to us that we should seek to promote a fast game on the ground, whether the wings or centre field. The defence and the backup are quite large gaps, quick passes would be able to solve. If you comply we have chance of success."

So watch for them to try and play a possession game. Should be a fascinating encounter tactically...
Seems two of their key injured players Skrtl and Stoch are likely to play today.

Quoting:

Will be a special match with New Zealand and the main coach Vladimir Weiss st ... Bratislava citizen becomes the first Slovak, who will work at the world championships as a player (1990) and coach (2010).  For both teams they will battle each other extremely hard with the ambition of progressing, which neither one of them hides, even though the favorites to participate in the fourth round are the other two teams, Paraguay and Italy. "We know who you play and what our opponents. Who will be successful, Finally, he goes on. There goes all our efforts in New Zealand, whether in the training process, the video analysis and assays. The first game is certainly a most important subject all this, "said the chief helmsman of Slovakia Vladimir Weiss st. In Slovenia, NZ played well, but gave up two goals from free kicks and one from a goalie error. In the Slovenia game they at least matched their opponent. They played really well. "
Slovak players who moved to South Africa on Wednesday, can not wait to have an initial meeting at the World Cup. "We have been counting the hours until the match. Of course,we have been watching the opponents, but we have to concentrate on our game, our strengths and weaknesses," said striker Erik Jendriek and immediately sent a message and SR fans: "Keep your fingers crossed. This is a great day for the whole of Slovakia and for us. I hope that all will stand behind us. "  His teammate Vladimir Weiss ml. knows what to do on the road to success: "We will try to get three points. We need to be sufficiently confident but humble.  "It's extremely difficult match. We will meet each other for both teams at the World Cup opening in each of those wishing to succeed. I saw your team to prepare against Cameroon, you have a great quality. I liked the performance of a small player with seven jersey on, I think the Weiss calls. It is very handy with the ball. Slovak biggest weapon, however, collective performance, "said head coach" Kiwi "Ricki Herbert. " Team captain and defender Ryan Nelsen briefly, but pointedly added: "We know that MS will want all three teams in our group in our battles with full points. We will try them upset."

Mate, you can't be picking and choosing your games at this stage. By everyone's reckoning Slovakia are our best chance of getting a result and we need to do all we can to achieve that. When that has been put in the bank, we look to the next game. We aren't good enough to have the luxury of picking and choosing like you suggest.
Spot on. We need to treat every game like it is the game of our lives. Players, management, supporters, all of us.I will be stoked if we get a draw.

A certain formation does not have to be introduced until days before a game. As long as you plan and show the players certain basic aspects in weeks in the leading up. In the days before, you reintroduce those drills and games with an certain emphasis on new formation, hence building on players' knowledge they have already. In a tournament, you always have a few different options for each of the three games and formation change is part of it.

Of course Slovakia is our best chance of getting a result and the 3-4-3 is our main stick formation, but you have to change and adapt at short notice if things are not going well late in the second half. The only difference is to dropping two player in a different position block (and we have two capable players to pull that off - only need two position to be altered) and open up space elsewhere as long as other players understand what is happening and it should change much if you planned it well.

Like I said, it is unlikely to pull this up so soon when it would be better to stick with the 3-4-3 that they have worked hard with and trusted/believe in 100% for this particular Slovakia team. However we have used 5-2-3/5-3-2 in the distant past when we are in being under constant attack. But having 5 in the back line for too long is inviting the opposition midfield in have a crack and that is not good.

Anyway, each game as you have said it focused for that game. Leave the short, medium and long term planning for the coaching management. The players will just follow their noses in the process, only a few players need to change in roles that they have done previously, a bit of change and alteration is not going to be difficult if certain training exercises are done as before but with a different emphasis during the tournaments and between the matches.

You can't be too short sighted in a tournament, you don't have that much time between the matches to do that.

I'm a bit gutted about the Italy/Paraguay result.

It certainly "throws the group open" as the media have been saying, but not really in our favour.

Would have much preferred Italy to spank them 8-0 so that a draw against Paraguay would put us through in second on goal difference.

Means a win and two draws probably needed now to even go through on goal difference.
