This thread has all gone Pete Tong Lads n lasses.
The Geordie national anthem sung by the toon army is 'The
Blaydon Races' (Oh me lads , ye shud've seen wu gannin
etc....) and has been pinched by loads of other teams who
insert their club's details e.g. "Gannin alang the Scotswood
road....To see the Blaydon Races" could easily become "Going down
to Wellingtown....To see the Phoenix aces" but it would never have
the same meaning to a non-Geordie.
I reckon, however, that loads of these footy chants should be
adopted by the Phoenix fans to keep the noise up on match days
(Wellington, Wellington na na to the tune of Vindaloo, Rikki
Herbert's Black n yellow army and other such recognised football
ditties). This is essential to get the football feeling at the
games and distinguish it from the contrived 'Hurricanes' type songs
at the rugby. As an Englishman I would love to hear groups of fans
from all over giving it large for Wellington to the tune of their
country's footy songs. I would personally listen, learn then join
in.
We do need a song that unites us all though and as soon as it
starts spreads all through the crowd. Nothing that has too strong a
meaning to any one country or club but nothing too poncey or hard
to learn either. I think something will just develop but if someone
comes up with a good'un I'll certainly sing along.
Remember, it's not where we're from or where we've been that
counts now, it's where we're going together. (That's my line....I
made it up!)
Here's one 4 yiz (tune of mellow yellow)
"I'm just wild about Ricki
Ricki's wild about me
And when we're winning the A'league
You can watch us from Oz on T.V.
