Well I hate to say it - but I remember when Blue is The Colour went to Number 5 in the UK charts and it was so catchy you couldn't help sing it .

Even though it was released for a game against Stoke I was more than happy to see Stoke win that one. Hard to see Stoke beating Chelsea these days.

Good link James Dean. It's a bit weird that they would be discussing this right now. Maybe you should send them the link to this thread.

Anyway, they missed one of the best football themed albums - The English Disease by The Barmy Army. I lifted one of my "best football songs ever" suggestions from this album (Mind the Gap) but it also contains such classics as Bobby Just Can't Win, Psycho + The Wombles of Div. 1, England 2 Yugoslavia 0 and Billy Bonds MBE. You can get this from Wellington City Library if you're interested.

They also could have included Hardcore Hooligan by The Business, which I've already mentioned.

Good article in the Guardian knowledge section. Liked the reference to subutteo and Dukla Prague. sanday2007-04-19 14:19:54

Going cheesy here.

What about nicking "You can't beat Wellington on a Good Day" (Datsun Violets) from the rugby.

or "Wellington" by the Muttonbirds
?

Muttonbirds - it would be a bit weird singing I wish I was In Wellington - when you are.

What about that classic tribute to the 1982 team "Marching on to Spain" featuring Ray Woolf.

Baddiel and Skinner - It's Coming Home!

Correct me if thats been mentioned already (I skimmed through the thread) but thats up there with the best. Personally, you can't top Vindaloo though. What an uplifter.

The song's actually called Three Lions and it has already been mentioned and dismissed as inferior to Vindaloo.

Vindaloo itself has caused controversy being described as everything from "the best England World Cup song ever" to "a big steaming piece of sh*t and we all hate England anyway so why don't they all f**k off?". OK, so I'm para-phrasing a little bit but you get my drift.

I think in general it is agreed that regardless of your personal feelings about the poms Vindaloo is the best England World Cup song ever. One sadistic moran used the infamous John Barnes rap as a justification for liking New Order's World In Motion and someone else mentioned England's Irie by Black Grape, which is also alright.

f**k it, I'm not English, what do I care?

And the RAF from England shot 'em down

Just like a Phoenix this thread will never die!

I've been back through the posts and put together a "Best Of" for all the new members. Hopefully we can get a few more suggestions in.

The "Best Of" is split into two lists:
1. A Wellington Phoenix playlist - songs related to the Wellington Phoenix in some way (definitely need some more suggestions here)
2. The Best Football Songs Ever playlist that was the original point of this thread - songs that are either about football or closely associated to football in some way

And by songs I mean actual songs, as performed by bands, not f**king chants (there's another thread for those somewhere).

The Wellington Phoenix playlist:

Phoenix City - The Skatalites (Number 1 Wellington Phoenix theme tune - no arguments!)
Flaming Soul - Flesh D-Vice (Shihad version also acceptable - number 2 Wellington Phoenix theme tune)
I Am The Resurrection - Stone Roses
Ring Of Fire - Johnny Cash
Days Of The Phoenix - AFI

The Best Football Songs Ever playlist:

Kicker Conspiracy - The Fall
Sit Down - James
Mind The Gap - Barmy Army
Born Slippy - Underworld
Eat My Goal - Collapsed Lung
Altogether Now - The Farm
All I Want For Christmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit - Half Man Half Biscuit
The Boy Done Good - Billy Bragg
I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles - The Cockney Rejects
Saturday's Heroes - The Business
Geezers Need Excitement - The Streets
I Predict A Riot - Kaiser Chiefs
I Could Beat You In A Fight - OdESSA

More suggestions welcome but no more f**king chants you morons!

Back from the dead again!

I am adding a couple of songs to the Wellington Phoenix playlist above:

Burning Down The House - Talking Heads
I'm On Fire - Bruce Springsteen

You've just been been waiting for a chance to use that haven't you?

I'm not so sure I should have resurrected this thread now!

Well spotted though.

This thread has all gone Pete Tong Lads n lasses.

The Geordie national anthem sung by the toon army is 'The Blaydon Races' (Oh me lads , ye shud've seen wu gannin etc....) and has been pinched by loads of other teams who insert their club's details e.g. "Gannin alang the Scotswood road....To see the Blaydon Races" could easily become "Going down to Wellingtown....To see the Phoenix aces" but it would never have the same meaning to a non-Geordie.

I reckon, however, that loads of these footy chants should be adopted by the Phoenix fans to keep the noise up on match days (Wellington, Wellington na na to the tune of Vindaloo, Rikki Herbert's Black n yellow army and other such recognised football ditties). This is essential to get the football feeling at the games and distinguish it from the contrived 'Hurricanes' type songs at the rugby. As an Englishman I would love to hear groups of fans from all over giving it large for Wellington to the tune of their country's footy songs. I would personally listen, learn then join in.

We do need a song that unites us all though and as soon as it starts spreads all through the crowd. Nothing that has too strong a meaning to any one country or club but nothing too poncey or hard to learn either. I think something will just develop but if someone comes up with a good'un I'll certainly sing along.

Remember, it's not where we're from or where we've been that counts now, it's where we're going together. (That's my line....I made it up!)

Here's one 4 yiz (tune of mellow yellow)

"I'm just wild about Ricki
Ricki's wild about me
And when we're winning the A'league
You can watch us from Oz on T.V.
They call us Phoenix Yellow.......PHOENIX
They call us Phoenix yellow.......PHOENIX

Baaldy, you're the one who's got it all a bit Pete Tong. Your post belongs in the Chants section which is devoted to the subject of chants.

You need to read my post from 25 April - this thread is about football related music but not chants as such. No one is suggesting any of the songs discussed here would make good chants. It's more along the lines of what would you like to hear in the pub before the game or played immediately before kick-off.

Anything vaguely footy or Phoenix related will do. Or even just a song that is evocative of football in some way eg. Sit Down by James or Born Slippy by Underworld as discussed in my very first post.

Sigh, I feel like I'm wandering in a lonely desert (Flaming Soul - Flesh D-Vice he he)

Mybad Terminator X.

Local Hero by Mark Knopfler is my shout or basically anything by Oasis would lead to a great pre match singalong in the booza.

Hope this makes amends!

Football songs no-one has mentioned;
The Futureheads - News And Tributes,
Lighning Seeds - Open Goals,
The Men They Couldn't Hang - Rosettes,
The Redskins - Reds Strike The Blues,
XTC - Grass,
Some of these aren't about football per see, but fit nicely in a football themed environment, if you get my drift.
Also, Serious Drinking were renowned for their footy/drinking crossover songs, and as mentioned, Half Man Half Biscuit's 'All I Want For Xmas Is A Dukla Prague Away Kit' is actually about playing Subbuteo as a kid, although the sleeve for the single suggests otherwise.
Nix, Leyton Orient and Alloa Athletic supporting schmuck.

All good.

Some good additional suggestions from The Jam also.

Another band who did quite a few football crossover songs were The Toy Dolls (eg. Cloughy Was A Bootboy). I never really got into The Toy Dolls, but some people f**king love them!

Made it to a hundred posts in this thread too.... nice one.

Nah, me neither. They were one of those "jokey" punk bands from the third wave whose jokes I never got. See also Peter and Test Tube Babies and Notsensibles.
I did an article in Sitter! about the music/football crossover. Anyone got the early issues?

"Thats entertainment" by The Jam....?

I always loved hearing the Toon sing "Phiiiiillipe, Phiiiillipe Al-bert...everyone knows his name...and all of his games" to the tune of Rupert the Bear...

Also Chelsea fans at the Bridge singing "he's here, he's there, he's every fookin where...Frank Leboooouf, Frank Lebooouf".

Frank complained in the match day program that he didn't want his name associated with foul language so the fans changed it to...."he's here, he's there, we're not allowed to swear......Frank Leboooouf, Frank Lebooouf".

Baaldy won't like The Toy Dolls - they're from Sunderland.

Another vote from me for "Vindaloo" as the best ever football song, I couldn't understand why it wasn't more popular in England at the time.  Loved it.

There was a spell when every time Sunderland won they'd play "Song One" by Blur after the final whisle, and every time we lost they'd play Oasis "Stop Crying Your Heart Out".  Needless to say Oasis got a lot of plays at the Stadium of Light during the 02/03 season!

Can't believe we got moved into the General Football Discussion. Boooooooring!

After everything we've done to put together a playlist of Phoenix related songs as well. Plus a list of songs to be played before Phoenix games. This thread couldn't be more Phoenix if it tried.

Suppose we should be grateful we haven't been given the ultimate kiss of death and gone into Off Topic.

Yeah - definitely a great song about football.

Pretty useless as a sing-along though.

How about a few songs related to Fire then?

First up:

Fire's Coming Down  - Pigeonhed

A brilliant slow-burner from the great and under-rated Pigeonhed. Can't find a link but the equally brilliant Low Fidelity Allstars remix of Pigeonhed's "Battleflag" is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_CrtH6l67Y

A few others:

Fire Fire - M.I.A
Blood & Fire - Niney the Observer
This Fire - Franz Ferdinand
Super-Fire - Girls Against Boys
Soul Fire - Lee Scratch Perry
On Fire - Spiritualized
