i normally enjoy BH's column, a good weekly column in the SST- but this week BH is BS.

His idea that teams should earn points for each goal rather than the standard 3 for a win, 1 foir a draw scenario reeks of Super Rugby's bonus point idea- Football is a simplle game- why tamper with it?

comments on Billy's brainstorm?

Stupidest idea ive ever heard. Id put 11 strikers up front as who needs defence in that system? you win 20-19 and get 20 points.

Was he high when he wrote that by any chance?

EDIT: Oh, i just went and actualy read the article, the league should be decided by goal difference...its still a stupid idea. You can flip that argument around and say sides wont mind losing games...as long as when they win, they win big enough to keep their goal difference lead. It will all of a sudden become irrelevant to actually win games, rather to keep your goal difference intact over the whole season...itd almost be like a 3420 minute game, just with week long breaks in between (and new opposition every 90 minutes of course)

It is a very very odd idea, and my original post still stands...was he high when he wrote that???

nope, even better his idea was that you lose points for goals conceded

even more daft than some of his previous efforts

the tension of the game comes from the result in the 90 mins, a 1-1 or even 0-0 draw can be as exciting as any other game in the season

a league decided only on goal diff would be appeal only to accountants

there was more to his argument but i couldn't be arsed elucidating

General agreeement seems to be, if it aint broke don't fix it

On the other hand, it used to be 2 points for a win, pass backs to keepers mopped up minutes of time per game and until the 7o's subsitutions were unheard of-

so the game has endured changes for the better

Yes, but a system like that would make the actual result of the game irrelevant. 2-1 win 1-1 draw, pretty much the same thing, only 1 goal gained. The premiership would now be over in england since man utd are now 20 goals ahead of the rest of the league.

Also, who is to say that chelsea grinding out 1-0 wins is wrong? If they have an amazing ability to dig in and win tight games, then fair play to them,1-0 or 4-0 a win is a win...they shouldnt be punished for being good at winning games

Slightly off-topic, but back in the 1970s and 1980s, when in most European leagues you only got 2 points for a win, in France they decided to give an extra point for teams that scored three goals or more in a game (bit like rugby these days I suppose). The idea didn't hang around too long, primarily because most leagues converted to 3 points for any win system, but I think there's something to be said for encouraging teams to continue to play positively even after they go 1 or 2 goals up. Italy, and I guess Chelsea these days and Arsenal in the past, had earned enmity on the football world for their negtive approach, and an incentive based-system rathern than what BH is proposing might not be a bad idea.

There is nothing wrong with some teams taking a negative approach, its a part of the game. It often also comes back to bite them on the ass as the opposition sneaks an equaliser.

No bonus points...it isnt working for rugby, definetly wont work for football. Goal difference still matters as a secondary way to rank teams if they are tied on points.

Well, I guess you need some teams to hate...

Also, in quite a few European leagues (including Spain and Champions League) goal difference doesn't serve as a primary tie-breaker; it's the head-to-head record that counts first. Personally not a big fan of that.

As somebody said, football is one of the few games where you can get an exciting 0 - 0 draw. I don't see anything wrong with the way it is at present. This isn't America, for God's sake, where draws are just about forbidden. What will it be next, teams getting a point for turning up?

The SPL, and the EPL I think, use goal difference to settle things if the points are the same

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Sorry, E-G. Don't understand the question.   I don't pay much attention to either team, which probably doesn't help.

I'm hearing rumours the big man may be here in June for the U-17 Womens draw.  If we're not seen in the same place, then you will know...

Someone get in touch with the TAB and we'll get some odds going on the HN-Sepp Blatter issue.

This idea smacks of a rugby revamp - with new laws to make the game more exciting - we all know how that worked. Silly silly idea!

Rugby was never exciting. Any change like the ones proposed would make football repulsive really, the way the game is played would be changed for the worse. Anyone sent in a letter slamming the bloke?

well, it hardly deserves an angry letter-any discussion is good discusion in my opinion-we don't want to continue an erroneous reputation of Football supporters as curmudegeonly whingers do we? Civilised debate is more noble than a lynch mob attitude.

I don't agree with him, but i respect his right to have an opinion
as thread starter i'd like to be thread ender- but i'll beleive that when i see it- Hard News or Frankie Mac will no doubt have the last word............................................................
