Kaka really needs to fire if Brazil are to dominate this tournament. I'm thinking he is hitting some form at just the right time, North Korea will be a nice warm up for him to arrive at the two tougher games primed.

Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

We might feel hard done by with the ref against Italy but Kaka getting sent off was a shoker - totally conned by the Ivory Coast defender. On tha other hand there was lots of niggle and hollywooding all round from both teams later in the game and Kaka's sending off was part of that. Brazil looked pretty good though.

That Brazil Ivory coast game was a shocker!
so much flip flapping! Good summary video. 4mins of cynical (pathetic) challeges and rolling around..

Agree Kaka's card was terrible, and people are calling the dive v Italy bad!

To be fair, Kaka was given a yellow. He was only sent off because it was his second yellow. He wasn't sent off for the incident itself.

Getting the yellow wasn't an outrageous decision given Kaka used his elbow in retaliation. What was outrageous was the Ivory Coast defender not being punished for the original challenge when he charged into Kaka.

Posted this in the match thread. Hope someone can enlighten me.

I have a question. When that great handball player Lusi Fabiano uses his skill set to score an important World Cup goal, it gets mentioned in passing at best, and when Thierry Henry does the same, it's the worst thing done by a human being in the history of the universe ever. Why is that?

Hmmm.

The romanticism that Brazil seem to inspire?

I agree a little, but it also has to do with the context - Henry's denied Ireland a chance at penalties to go to the world cup. Fabiano's didn't have as much effect on the match (when looking in retrospect) as Henry's. In saying that, I didn't get as upset as some at Henry, same as I wouldn't get upset at Maradona - its not his problem, its the officials.

Yeah the fact that the ref questioned L Fabiano about it and then had a cheeky laugh about it, belies belief...if he thought it was handball why did he allow it....

I enjoyed the game unitl last 20mins of ridiculous play....Brazil evolving nicely.

That was ridiculous, the ref tapped his arm as if to signal a handball. Then laughed and tapped his shoulder, then more chuckling.

It was as if hey I saw that, but I thought I'd give it to you.

watched the replay of the game vs the ivorians. beautiful play by the brazilians for their goal but come the end i got sick of seeing them rolling around on the floor, they were worse than the italians.

That depends on the eye of the beholder, doesn't it? The Irish cried to high heavens how they've been robbed of going to the World Cup (while in fact, they hadn't even managed to be in a qualifying position the entire tie with France), and, using the same perverse Irish logic, the Ivorians could claim that LF's second goal robbed them of a chance to perhaps claim a draw and progress to the knock-out stages.

Of course, both claims are absolute fallacies, but I'm just intrigued by the difference with which Henry and France, and now Luis Fabiano and Brazil, have been treated. I guess if you don't go out of the way to portray yourself as an innocent victim of evil doers, no-one really cares...

I think Brazil get extra allowance as the darlings of the press and by convention the favourite team of most neutrals (the anti-England if you will!). These sorts of reputations are based on out-dated stereotypes but lots of people subscribe to them, consciously or not. I remember starting to want Brazil to lose in 2002 because everyone I talked to about the World Cup was gushing over Brazil like it was still 1970 with Pele et al.

France and Henry don't inspire the romanticism of Brazil. Combine that with the "victims" being the Ivory Coast, with whom the press et al probably don't identify with as much as the "plucky Irish".
It's probably only Brazil who could commit such an offence without a fuss - can't think of another team who are liked by default?

I though the fake injury theatrics by both Brazil and the Ivory Coast were both pretty awful - it is the worst kind of cheating and it is the biggest curse of football and almost all teams do it. Absolutely hate it! Don't care who does it.

I hope like hell our NZ team doesn't slip into this as well. So far so good....

To be honest, I don't think we were exactly immune to it in the game against Italy.

Poor game against Portugal, played completely within themselves. The crowd and everyone watching around the world deserved much better. I hope to see the real Brazil play against Chile.

Getting better every game....Kaka still a little off the pace but with Elano back next game they should be more threatening...maybe Dani Alves will replace Ramires (suspended)

If Chile actually had someone who shot instead of walking it around the edge of the area this game would have been close... thank god Webb didn't fall for some of the theatrics.

I'll go further.  Maicon, what a c**t.  Dives, avoids a booking, and has the nerve to whine at the referee.

Get f**ked.

I have to say I'm beggining to see a 6th title on the way...sorry HN, but I disagree, thought that was frighteningly easy for Brazil this morning.

Hope the Dutch can give them more of a game.

Yeah - lots of dives by both teams. The Brazilian fans I was watching with knew when their guys had dived or faked. My impression was that quite a few of them were a bit embarrased about that. Kaka's card was harsh though - he barely touched the guy - but maybe that is some justice coming back for his diving.

Need to have video citings for divers. No-brainer.

Looks like Elano is out for the rest of the cup with an edema in right ankle. Came from that nasty tackle against Ivory Coast, looked similar to the one Bertos got against Oz from Grella.
He may be back later in tournament should Brazil survive against the Dutch...

Well well well - just goes to show that you can never tell in football eh!

Thought the Dutch might be the under-estimated dark horses and they're actually my third team (after NZ and Brazil). Always wanted to see them do well as my first memories of World Cup Football were of the classy Dutch back in the 1970s... now for Germany-Argentina - that has to be a cracker - can't pick that one....
