December 4th

7:00pm (South Africa time)

WC finals draw in Capetown

It should be live on TV. Might turn up on Iraqgoals.net

I WANT TO KNOW WHO WE ARE PLAYING NOW!!

In the meanwhile, who's going to be our warm-up matches beforehand?

It would be a bit difficult to know who we're playing now, given we're just the 24th team to qualify (just as we were in 1982, by the by).

As I type, Tunisia are dropping their bundle in a big way in Mozambique, and it's looking like Nigeria will advance at their expense ... unless Kenya muster a late equaliser, which will be enough to send the Tunisians through.

Cheers,

JR

7pm SA time is what in NZ... About 9am here or something?
Permalink Permalink

I was thinking probably 6am or something. I remember the Confed games over there were bout 6.30 and 7am.

Hoping we draw RSA. They are a top seed so we could get a result. But at the same time, hope we are in a pool with huge heavyweights so that we arent expected to get through, but if we did, It would be miraculous

Actually I think with a revenge match against RSA would be great, expect for those blasted horns. However, I think we can do a better job against them than what happen at the Confederation Cup, they are quite a beatable side for us. I think that at the moment we might even be ahead of them in the FIFA rankings at the moment.

This was on another forum, is it correct??

The pots for the world cup draw are split into four. The first pot contains the 7 seeded nations + the host nation.
Pot 1: Argentina, Brazil, England, France*, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Spain
*if france qualify

The other three are sorted by continent, as that eliminates the chance of facing a team in south africa that you already met in qualification.

Pot 2 will be made up of the rest of UEFA: Denmark, Netherlands, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Portugal/Bosnia, Greece/Ukraine, Russia/Slovenia.

The final two pots will be based on whoever wins the intercontinental playoffs. These are:
Costa Rica v Uruguay
New Zealand

If NZ & Costa Rica qualify:
That'll make: 4xAsian. 4xNthAmerican. 5xAfrican. 2xSthAmerican. 1xOceania... In that case:
Pot 3 will be: Asia + NthAmerica
Pot 4: Africa + SthAmerica + Oceania

If NZ & Uruguay qualify:
That'll make: 4xAsian. 3xNthAmerican. 5xAfrican. 3xSthAmerican. 1xOceania
Pot 3 will be: Asia + NthAmerica + Oceania
Pot 4: Africa + SthAmerica

I haven't check throughly but that looks about right. With Bahrain gone, the pot depends on CR and Uruguay match which I haven't check the result yet. I think they have are playing this weekend.

we need warm up games. who would be good to play?
Permalink Permalink

I guess it depends on who we are drawn to play????

Perhaps we can invite Bahrian for some matches.

Maybe really get some history and get Watford down here.

Uruguay definitely look the goods in that playoff, with an away win. CR will be kicking themselves for letting a late, late equaliser against the Yanks to send Honduras through instead. (Funnily enough, the only other time Honduras qualified for the World Cup was in...1982).

'Best' scenario would be to be drawn in South Africa's pool, and get another African team in our group...along with a relative European lightweight. FIFA won't let it happen.

I wouldn't mind getting a Brazil, Italy or England though.

Just great that we can talk about this!!

Australia would be cool to play against. Spain maybe. I'm not expecting to make the second round so good teams playing us would be nice

Well I think it is a good thing for Ricki to be at the draw, he would be the only person from the NZF that anyone else would recognise.

I imagine that it is like a stockmarket bidding for the opponents for friendly matches. It may be very much a fight to get the best places and the best warm up opponents. So they have to get in quick.

You need Ricki and the coaching staff at these events so they know what they want for the pre-WC preparation.

That's an impossible scenario - the only continental confederation that can have two teams in one group is Europe. Two African teams in the same group can't happen.

Plus the African sides would be incredibly tough for us, I'm hoping to avoid them (other than South Africa as the weakest seed).

Will get up for that. Will be exiting as. Hopeing for England. Any South American team we will get blown of the park.

Its going to be great to watch, Im guessing most teams would want us in their group, but that might come back to bite them.

Dutch(3) seeded above french(9), therefore french would be in that 2nd pool by your system and dutch seeded

Nah, France will be seeded as long as they qualify tomorrow morning. The Dutch need France and maybe Portugal (have to check on this) to fail to qualify to go into the first pot with other seeds.

so that means we cant get Aussie unless Costa Rica win?

in fact, the draw looks like it would be far better for us (on balance of probabilities) if Costa Rica. Go the RICANS!!!

when is their match in montevideo?

It's on at noon. Not on our TV, but will definitely be on the net.

A friend saw the first game, said CR lucky to have escaped with a 1-0 loss. Hard to see them overturning it over there, but like you Marius, it would be much better for us if they did.

if costa rica won we could hope for a group including:
SA, Slovakia, NZ, Honduras

THat would be cool

Swap Honduras for North Korea, and it'd probably be the best group we can hope for.

Denmark/Switzerland and the winner of Greece/Ukraine we could scrap against as well.
