I imagine Lescott or Upson. Lescott would be first choice however it will be Rio who starts.

Rio Ferdinand could always "Rap" England through, I hear he's trying to establish himself a new career for after football. he has enough problems trying to speak coherently in the first place so he should be at home "Rapping".

You say this out of hate. If England have everyone fit, they are serious WC contenders. No other teams have stars like Lampard, Gerrard, Barry, Rooney, Terry, Ferdinand, Cole etc. Not to mention the depth considering Young, Beckham and co cannot make the starting 11.

Yup, I bet there will be many a coach who's gutted he doesn't have that sort of quality in his squad.
How the hell can you say Terry, Barry and Ferdinand are not quality. Barry and Terry are easily top 5 in their positions (DM and CB) while Ferdinand is certainly competing. Looking forward to England to prove you all wrong.

Spain are the only team that would come close to matching them. They lack depth at the back however and all their midfielders are too similar. Strikers sort of conflict with each other which doesn't allow them to perform to their best. Also Capello is so much better then Gonzalez. Not to mention Spain are bigger chokers then England.

Dude, England's a decent side, but to compare them to Spain is laughable. When England played them in a friendly recently, they couldn't get anywhere near the ball. England don't have the passing and technical ability that Spain have, and their backline is too slow to contain the speed of Torres.

And Barry top 5 midfielders? What? That is just ridiculous.

Yeah, can't argue with that - a decent assessement.

We're good value for the QFs, which is in-line with our seeding level. After that, we need a little luck and a kind draw... then anything can happen on the day. Brazil, Italy, Germany and Spain are the top 4 seeds using the calculations, with the Dutch replacing Germany in the current rankings.

We lack depth in key areas, so it will be a nervous injury watch for the rest of the season.

That's pretty much what I said in my original post in this thread (albeit with an added caveat that betrayed some of my own bias...but we can still be friends, can;t we ).

I promise from now to stick to proper discussion, and leave cheap shots behind...well, I'll try my best anyway.

Yeah. Plus Torres has scored a few against Chelsea over the years... With JT doing all his dirty tricks (that knee in the thigh... I honestly wanted to kill Terry then).

as SiNZ suggested for some countries it might be a good to have a 'designated' fans of that country topic

in this country it's good to have somewhere to talk football with fellow fans - til YF clubrooms where about the only places

here on YF i can do without wind-up merchants and i don't go into other countries threads to take the piss

if you want to start an anti-somewhere topic feel free -  I'll stay away from the 'inevitable' anti-England one

But I will start one for England and I'm happy to watch for trolls on that topic and for any two othe countriess that wish,  I'm not doing all of them

here's the England supporters one

I hear a Vera Lynn song coming.....

The real talking will sat around the end of May when United and Chelski are fined 35 points and relegated and Hull iss it by 3 points. Then World Cup concentration can start.

Nice.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

All England have now is a good coach - their players are still as average as previously. Unfortunately for England, Capello won't actually be on the park.

Hopefully with New Zealand there we won't see constant World Cup stories concentrating on England this time.

I certainly don't like them, and my Dad has English parents, was born and raised there and didn't move to New Zealand until he was 28.

I just hate far too many of the English national team, and don't really like their supporters either.

My Dad is English. I grew up watching England with him and my passion for football has stemmed from his, especially the passion he showed for the English national team.

I no longer follow them very strongly, but always have a little interest in them. It's the only connection i seem to have with my Dad now.

So yeah, that's why.

Three for me, and two for them.

Basically the same, although my passion for football comes much more from his love of club side, than the national team. But he supports the English national team too. I take a little bit of interest in them, and generally want them to do well. But as I've got older, I've taken more of an interest in the Spanish side, and Spanish football in general. The emotional rollercoaster is so similar between the sides anyway!

A lot of poeple follow England because their is a lot of English blood in NZ. I was born there and, by default, follow them passionatly. Hopefully my son will as well as he is 1/2 English. Passion is what you need to follow a team. Sadly a lot of people prefer the bandwagon approach. Each to their own. Lets support England in this thread and, if you want to talk trash about them, start your own thread. Don't he a hater.

Its no longer a problem.

Indeed. This was the England thread, but due to the WUMs on site and Tiger's organisations skills we've moved. Not sure why some people feel the need to troll threads for other teams. Hey ho. Just the way people are I guess.

Ipswich however....

Was enjoying championship being a Norwich free zone, but looks like we are so desperate for the derby we'll do anything, even relegate.

Loving England's draw. Their fans thing it's easy cuz they don't think USA even play Football and it's a god given right that they are superior to African teams. A good one for them to flunk in.

We think it's a kinder draw than some of our rivals have been granted - that is indisputable. As for the rest of your post, I think you are one of those that make up opinions, assign them to others so that you can then criticise what "they think."

Scott Adams, Dilber creator, has written of a similar problem he has with people inventing his opinions and then publicly criticising him for them.

Every England fan that I came across yesterday had no consideration that there's a possibility of those teams beating England. I wasn't inventing opinions, as much as being creative about them... And I was venting my anger on the internet!

Permalink Permalink

Being creative? Is this the same level of creativity that leads all NZers to be branded sheep shaggers who hate football? Where do you draw the line between being creative and just plain invention?

Particularly, as you manage to find English fans that I, as an Englishman myself, never seem to meet - whether I'm back home, here on YF, or on the two email discussion lists I subscribe use (a Brighton one and a general football one ostensibly Prem related). I don't go trolling other team threads to know, but do you go into all of them doing this or is it just England fans you go looking for knobs in order to justify an anger vent? Assuming you manage to find some knob somewhere to give you a cause for creativity. If you go looking for knobs of any persuasion, you'll find them and then you'd be on here venting your anger at every team in the world... including the AWs and the Nix!

As I more or less said in the England forum, which is pretty much in line with the other opinions there. Of the pot 4 teams, I'm happy to have got one of Slovenia and Slovakia - probably the easier of the European nations in that pot - and in particular to have avoided France and Portugal. Of the pot 3 teams, I'm okay with Algeria and would not have wanted any of the other African teams. Most of the other teams in each of those pots would have been tougher, I'm sure. In pot 2, I really didn't want either of the US or Australia - but then again, the only team I actually wanted out of that pot was Honduras.

I certainly think we have one of the better groups and we should progress, with every reason to think we should lead the group. Then we will likely have a nasty second round tie. We're in a similar position to Spain there - one of the better groups, but then we meet someone coming out of the tougher groups. Any two of those teams in Group D could progress and none of them are weak.

Haha. No, I don't go searching for people to satisfy myself in this way. I don't go to any forums apart from teams I support - well, I have a couple of times out of interest as to what other fans think of our fans/players. Honestly, I just heard guys talking yesterday with utter arrogance, and I constantly hear this sort of thing. The media bias of England emphasis makes my annoyance greater and probably makes me more attentive to it. Ok, now obviously not all England fans are like this. Actually, most of the English guys who I've been mates with are the first to admit that the high level of idiot fans / followers they have. Every country has this, but at least in New Zealand (and Sydney where I lived), it's the England fans that always get on the wrong side of people quite a lot. Well, that's been my experience, and maybe it isn't your experience... Doesn't mean I'm a liar, doesn't mean you're a liar. My views are nothing personal against all England fans.

European teams I would rather get than Slovenia would be: Switzerland, Slovakia, and maybe Denmark. Porgugal aren't as good as previous years I don't think, so England might have had a better chance agaisnt them this time, but I suppose they'll still be pretty good. Slovenia came through against Russia, which is huge. Awesome defensive record and will have some flair.

Algeria would have been the preferred African option for most people. I don't know much about how good they are, but unknown African teams are often under-rated by everyone. Beat good teams along the way so should be useful.

Out of Pot 2, USA definately one of the strongest teams. USA and England will be considered favourites in the group, but Slovenia and Algeria will have a good chance.
