Seems to be a decent future generation of England players coming through so the FA must be doing something right.

U17 Euros 2017 - Runners Up
Toulon - 2016 and 2017 Winners
U20 World Cup 2017 - Winners

U19 and U21 Euros both to come over the next month.

Commentators said the team had largely been together for 2 or 3 years through the different age groups. Must feel more like a team than a bunch of stars being cobbled together on the eve of a tournament. Didn't even qualify for the last U20 WC here. I remember being disappointed not to be able to go and see England, and apparently hadn't even won a game at the U20 WC since the 1997 edition.

And now won it. Amazing game. Can't believe we've won a football World Cup! Didn't think I'd see it in my lifetime.

Yeah great stuff! Thought England were good value for their halt time lead, but seemed to run out of puff in the second half; still, they managed to guts it out, which was great to see. A very open free flowing game too.The peroxide haired ball player for Venezuela was very classy, and I liked the look of Onomah, Lookman, & Walker-Peters at left back(despite being a right footer!). Really though, England had several more excellent players in their line up/squad. Amazing what can happen when you send close to a full strength team for a change eh?  Now the trick is for the clubs to actually pick some of these guys, rather than buying overseas players. Problem is of course, that many clubs are foreign owned & managed, and they don't give two hoots about England's national team, whatever they say...

Home Grown” and “Club-Developed” Player requirements in the EFL

At present, Section 5 of the EFL’s Rules and Regulations (“EFL Rules and Regulations”) requires each EFL club to nominate 6 home grown players on their team sheet for each league match (which includes Play-Off matches) (Rule 33.7).

Following the EFL’s recent announcement, EFL clubs have agreed to increase that number to 7 for the 2018-19 season.

A “Home Grown Player” is defined in the (Rule 33.8) as a player who:

  • irrespective of their nationality or age, has been registered with either:
    • their current club (who is a member of the EFL); and/or
    • a club and/or any other football club affiliated with the Football Association (“FA“) or Football Association of Wales (for example, EPL or non-league clubs)
    • for a period, continuous or non-continuous, of three seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which they turn 21).

Home grown player requirements were first introduced by the EFL in time for the 2009-10 season, with EFL clubs having to name at least 4 home grown players in what was then a 16 player match day squad, a quota that was subsequently increased in the 2011-12 season to 6 in order to reflect the increase to 18 player match day squads.

They almost had me until the keeper who got a tap on the shin from a team mate spent two minutes on the ground looking like he was dead before tanking a 60 metre goal kick.  I can imagine the uproar from the English press if a Johnny foreigner pulled that stunt against the English full team.

An interesting fact is that 5 of the England players from the starting 11 in the final are still eligible to play for Nigeria if they want to.

Isn't that the case with most Western European countries these days though? How many players from France or Italy are elegible to play for an African side?
