Just going to add to our end of season depression when he signs for Auckland

We should do everything possible to keep this guy. Has personality and skill, and works his ass off. We won't find much better. Reminds me a lot of Kraev

Perhaps the money save from Marco might be better directed at getting Chico on a 2 year deal??
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

He's not going to Auckland lol. They don't need him. But there's every chance that any number of the Australian sides outbids us for him (that's if his parent club lets him leave & he wants to stay in Australasia).

Victory. Think Chico played with Roderick Miranda at Rio Ave.
Miranda may even be local player soon for the VUC (this is his 4th season in the ALM), freeing up a visa spot for them.

That's if at 34, Miranda wants to keep on playing.

Or Geraldes could go to Sydney FC and speak Portuguese daily with Diego Costa (and Léo Sena). Unless you are really really good in your 2nd language, it can be tiring not talking in your native tongue for long periods.

So yeah for various reasons won't be easy for the Nix to keep him.

3 months off, takes him to July, plenty of time to get him back to full fitness before August pre-season and October kick off.

Pass, only has to be one thing go wrong in rehab and where would we be. For me just too much of a risk last thing we need is to start next season with guys who should be starters either not ready or starting from the bench.
Would prefer they put al ne through him and start looking know.

I think this injury probably greatly increases our chances of keeping him. Other teams will be less keen and he can have rehab continuity and a nice long offseason to get ready for next season.

Yeah I kind of agree with this take. It'd be hard for his parent club to offload an injured player, so it might work in our favour.

Gutted he's injured though, just as he was starting to form some great partnerships

Seems Chico picked up his injury in the WSW match. Shame no media questions about Rojas's sudden departure.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/360641272/wellington-phoenix-lose-star-midfielder-chico-geraldes-rest-season

No media attended coach Giancarlo Italiano’s weekly press conference on Friday and he wasn’t asked about Rojas’ departure by the club’s media staff.

He was asked about Geraldes and said the injury stemmed from the Wanderers match and would mean he needed three months off feet.

There is definitely someone there asking question that isn't the media manager. Rollo is on leave. Not sure why Piney isn't there.

In the media's defence, there was a heavy dose of football stories coming off the keyboards during the AWs 2 games in NZ. I mean WC qualification is a big deal. A few late nights for the journos no doubt

So no problem if some of them are having a bit of time off. The Nix are hardly positive newsworthy at the moment. And somehow doubt the Nix/italiano would reveal much on Marco's sudden departure anyway "exploring different/new options, blah blah blah".

Got to remember if we get players like Zawada usually they’ve been injured and need to prove themselves or have had some other issue.

Is Chico a good role of the dice?

He's turned around a team who were at the lowest point I've seen them in maybe 10 years. He has blended in and made partnerships with teammates in a matter of weeks. Imagine what he could do with a full pre season - of course its a no brainer.

Can't believe some people here have the initial reaction to not try for him end of the season. Often times its the same people on here who question how the club is run and whether the club has a winning mentality!?

Dont know about others but for me think its completely understandable why i question how hard we should go for him.
Agree he has looked good and appears to have fitted in well. But all thats going to be no good at all if his rehab dosnt go to plan and the Phoenix start next season with him either not being able to do much pre season or even worse starting the season from the bench.
If he comes at a good price and can be cut easily if his rehab dosnt go to plan yep go for it otherwise no. All well and good for people to say he should be ready but as we have seen it dosnt always go as wanted or expected.

Turned around what exactly? We have not won since he arrived - he set up a goal and scored another one in 5 games, our standards must have pitifully low if we consider he has turned our season around

I think it really is the case that our standards had gotten pathetically low, and he really had helped a lot to turn things around. Over the last two games, we appeared like a genuinely competitive outfit that looked capable of more than sitting disgustingly deep and praying for hail mary goals from counterattacks. That really is a huge improvement from what we have been watching for the last 3 months, even if it hasn't resulted in wins.

Huge improvement is an understatement. The quality of play was the worst I've seen in a long time - 10+ years. We were in a massive hole. If you can't see how the style of play has turned around you're blind.

I think it's neat that he is still hanging around here and enjoying himself.  Apparently he loves it!  Would have been  easy for him to jump on a plane and rehab at his other club.. I hope we can keep him.

Gill made an interesting comment about Chico at today’s members’ event.

It was a bit oblique so hopefully I’m not misinterpreting or misrepresenting, but it sounds like Chico’s injury has given the club pause for thought - yes he’s loving it here and they can absolutely see his potential, but they don’t want to end up in another Rojas situation where a good player is sidelined most of the season.

Apparently they expect to have a better idea about his recovery in a couple of weeks.

Edit: I originally said "don't want to risk another Rojas situation", but that's overcooking it - obviously everything in football is uncertain, so they're looking to manage the risk not pretend it can be eliminated.

Fully understand waiting to see how recovery goes... Although, it would be sad to see him go if he is fine. I think we'll struggle to find someone as good as Chico

It is a long shot we keep Chico, given his contract with his parent club it is out of our hands to start with. He mentioned several times in interviews that his motivation was to enjoy football again, and apart from a few moments here and there, the way we have played this season cannot be enjoyable for anybody. He also specifically mentioned enjoying linking up with Kosta & Sutton, and it is likely both won't be here next season too.

I am expecting, like many European tourists you meet in NZ, he will see the sights then move on to the next place, and so won't be signing on for next season. I'd be happy for him to stay though.

It’s how we got Zawada and  Kraev.

One coming off an injury and one out of favor.

Yet Zawada is being looked by top ten leagues now and Kraev is still a workhorse with technique who also scores goals.

The question isn’t trying to sign Chico, it’s the plan b for if he does get injured.
