His 2nd half tackle you could write a book about.  His goal, a no0vel.

Smith for me, he seemed solid and unflappable almost all game.

Very, very impressed with Smith and amazing work by the 36 year old Elliott to keep going the entire 90 mins too but the vote obviously has to go to Winston.

I'm giving it to the balding old codger in midfield for some great distribution and gritty defending. My opinion of Elliot has been completely turned on its head in the last 3 or four games.

Voted Reid but thought that Smith and Elliot also played very well.

(TBH though I thought that Reid was a little bit to blame for the Slovakia goal in not marking his man properly).

Ivan was MIA and both Leo and Lochead got owned by the Slovakians.

Shocker from Pasty but he did pull off a great save to keep us in the game.

Reid gets it from me for his goal and for being solid at the back with a last-ditch tackle to stop the Slovaks going ahead by two.  I thought our back 3 were incredible.  Elliot was good also.  At the start of the first half he seemed a bit lost.  Maybe nerves.  But by the end of the game he was great.

Nelsen giving that Slovak an earful was beautiful.

Think it is Elliot for me...

Smeltz for making the goal and keeping fighting right to the end. WTF was Reid doing in the penalty area?!? AWESOME!

though the fight was missing a bit earlier though...Ricki needs to apologise to Vicelich really...

Giving it to Reid - goal-saving tackle plus an last-minute equaliser have arguably have the biggest impact on the outcome of the game.

Think some people are a bit harsh on blaming Reid for their goal - as a defender, you're not really taught to mark players who are in an offside position. In those cases, you have to rely on the officials to make the right call, and they failed to do so this time. Tough luck, but it's life. Not really Reid's fault.

I also feel somewhat vindicated in questioning the selection of Ivan for the holding midfield role before the game. Thought he struggled mightily.

I thought Elliot had an amazing game. Best game he has played in a long time. Calm when in possession, always an option, worked hard and made some great tackles.

To be honest, EG. I doubt whether Reid had time to get the slide rule out to determine whether he was offside or not. You ARE taught to play to the whistle. The striker wasn't standing 5 yards offside when the ball was played in and Reid lost him. Despite that, for the reasons you've stated, he was my MOM

As for the offside. Get over it. Yes, he was offside, the replays showed that, but there wasn't a helluva lot in it. It happens. Move on.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Reid reideemed himself ,  but I wasnt that hard on him about the goal personally, thought it was well taken by them.

Nelsen played well and I think he was inspiring when we needed him to be, giving the offender a bollocking, and pushing forward and it seems he might have told Reid to get up there.

Smeltz showed again he knows how to get there for chances, just not quite sharp enough finishing, but that cross, bloody magic, I cant recall him doing an assist like that before.

Rest were all ok, Pasty was shaky, as was Lochy at times but both did enough to make up for that for me.

MOM to Reid, what a header and such importance, life changing for a few possibly.

Reid without a doubt for both defence and 'the goal'.  Nelsen is like our permanent MOM..
IMO, Smeltz looked like he was waiting for a train.. but of course delivered when it counted [there, was that delicate enough?]
Regardless, the whole team gave us the result we needed - improvement and points!  let's face it, we rock..

I beg to differ Jag - it's clearly visible to Reid that Vittek is offside as the play's developing, that's why he never bothers to cover him properly (unlike most offside situations, the defenders were facing the goal here, and could see two Slovakian players in an offside position, including Vittek). In that situation, you only make things worse trying to cover, because then you put the seed of doubt in the officials' mind as to whether it actually was offside. If you see Reid's reaction after the goal, he's immediately turned to the lino looking for a flag - but the lino was late in getting to the position and missed the call.

Reid was perfectly entitled to do what he did, particularly since playing to the whistle when it comes to offside doesn't really apply anymore because of the way the law is officiated. The officials' got it wrong, doesn't matter, it's life, but don't blame Reid for having correctly read the situation and we still ended up conceding because of it.

I completely disagree with that, in my view he cocked it up, but that's what makes the world go round.

Reid for me, even though he was probably at fault for conceeding the goal - he did lose the attacking player....but made a decent effort in defence and of course the goal.

Voted Reid however I think Smith is a great talent for the future. So consistent him and Reid are going to be our star defenders in the future. Would be surprised if they are not in the top leagues in the future.

I think that Reid is a bit more raw than Smith at the moment, who looks closer to the whole package already. Think that Reid probably has a higher ceiling talent-wise though. Either way, it's great to have 2 very good up and coming defenders to step into Nelsen's big boots when he leaves.

I agree, he was ball watching and had no idea that there was anyone outside him.
I give him great credit for putting it aside and getting on with the game.

Elliott for me was the best player.
